Fifty glorious years of undergraduate education in Physics
(1954-2004)
An appeal
Dear alumnus and friends,
At the outset, I take this humble opportunity to convey my heartiest wishes and gratitude to you on the auspicious occasion of the `Golden Jubilee Year' of the introduction of undergraduate Physics education in the collegiate framework of G C College. Just to recapitulate, the Physics Department of G C College was established in 1949 as a part of `Arun Kumar Chanda Science Section’. As a step forward towards the introduction of higher education, B Sc Pass course in Physics was introduced in the year 1954 and it was gradually upgraded to B Sc Honours standard in 1962. On the solemn occasion of the `Golden Jubilee Year', we gratefully acknowledge the selfless service rendered by our mentors, the former teachers and particularly our all alumni.
Our humble endeavour of providing quality science education in this remote part of the country received a shot in the arm by the august visit of world renowned scientist Professor Meghnad Saha in the early fifties. Since then, in addition to routine curriculum, the department has received wide appreciation because of the brilliant results of its students and many extra-curricular activities. During the College Science Exhibition, various models, electronic gadgets, resourceful data, science debate, quiz and posters etc. of the physics pavilion were applauded by all sections of the students. In the sixties, prior to the establishment of the All India Radio, Silchar, the department deserves the credit of setting up a temporary ‘All India Radio, G C College’ in Silchar on an experimental basis during the `Social Week' program. Many former students, who showed their cultural proficiency through that amateur radio station, still remember its impact upon their young minds.
These academic endeavours, which form the basic threads of the higher education and research in South Assam, are still being cultivated in the Department as a part of its unique tradition. In 1997, the Department organized UGC sponsored `Discovery of Electron-Centennial Colloquium’ (in association with Chemistry Department, GCC), in 1999 Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) sponsored a National Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics (in association with Mathematics Department, GCC) etc. which were attended by several distinguished scientists. For the last few years, we have been publishing the departmental magazine, `ANWESHAN' to enable our students to get familiar with recent developments and issues of the contemporary physics. With active support from the college authority, recently a Departmental Seminar Library was established in a modest form. The students are our greatest assets who over the years uphold the name of the college in the HS and university exam. As a mark of the recognition of these academic activities and brilliant results of our students, since 1984, `A K Gupta Memorial Prize’ has been instituted by a charitable trust to the student of our college who tops the B Sc (Physics Honours) Examination of the university.
You will be happy to learn that to commemorate the `Golden Jubilee Year' we have undertaken two programs:
1. We are organizing a National Conference entitled "PHYSICS RESEARCH IN THE NORTH-EAST" on November 5 & 6, 2004, which will be attended by several distinguished physicists of the country. We shall also publish a souvenir to make the occasion memorable.
2. We are planning to hold REUNION-2004 on a suitable date (to be declared later) to enable our alumni and friends to take part in a funfair in the campus of their alma mater.
You will be delighted to know that to make our endeavours a success, a number of alumni have generously come forward of their own accord to support our conference in different forms. In absence of the official homepage of G C College till today, some alumni have helped us by preparing and hosting the webpage which is indispensable for keeping track of about 100 delegates visiting our college in connection with the said Conference. Also many of our alumni have already expressed their willingness to attend the REUNION-2004.
For successful completion of the conference, we appeal to all our former students, friends and well-wishers of the G C College for all round cooperation, support and help.
Last but not the least, we solicit your valuable opinion about the date and participation in REUNION-2004.

I happened to fly over the GC College.......website.
Congratulations on the good effort.
May I request the good souls, the ex-students of this institution, the souls who are communication professionals...who have the proper tools...to volunteer for further beautification...of the site.
There are no links for arts and commerce sections yet.......
More than the monetary flamboyance...it is the information...the projection to the outside mortal world...that glorifies the glories of an institution.

Hi how is life.This is prasanta Dey working in Aaj tak delhi. i passed out in the year 2001 commerce(hons).I have not yet taken my certificate how to do the same can u please guide me.
