travel to and from Silchar by Road
«on: 06/22/03 at 12:36:38 »

Can someone provide following informations:
How much time it generally takes by tata sumo from Guwahati to Silchar, what is the fare per person, is the journey comfortable? Is ther any chance of landslide during the month of August? What is the safe mode by bus or tata sumo. Suggest whether evening flight from Guwahati to Calcutta can be taken if someone starts by tata sumo on the same day in the morning from Silchar. How is the ATR service from Silchar to calcutta?

I assume you have some work in Guwahati so you have to take the Silchar-Guwahati-Kolkata route rather than Silchar-Kolkata.

Sumo service :
Approx Rs. 350/- per head ( bus fare is around Rs.230/-). Not comfortable as they generally pack in 8-10 persons and do not start till the vehicle is full. Time taken is around 10 hours, only marginally less than by bus. Landslides in August ? Well, possible...my guess is as good as yours. Suffice to say, there's no real time or safety difference between the two options but keeping comfort in mind, you should hop onto a bus...ASTC has some very good buses these days and is doing good business.
Another not-so-viable option is Silchar-Guwahati by ATR ( probably 4 times a week around 2:35 PM)...fare is around Rs 2200/-

Gwh-Kolkata flight :
The last flight is Sahara at 5:10 PM...there is also a weekly Air-India flight ( I think Thurday ) at around 7 PM...cheapest fare but it often gets cancelled depending on the Bangkok-Guwahati status. So even if you move at 4 AM in the morning from Silchar, you'd be cutting it a bit too fine. Its possible, but not worth the risk I feel.

ATR between Silchar-Kolkata:
42 seats, so bookings are a problem at times despite 10 flights a week.Takes more time than those antiquated Boeing 737s and although luckily I haven't been on one of those yet, I'm told they are quite bumpy in rough weather.

If I were you, I would take the ATR from Silchar to Kolkata...would work out much easier, faster and  cheaper than via Guwahati. If you HAVE to come to Guwahati, then take a BUS the previous morning/evening and then take the 12PM IA/12:05PM Jet or 3PM Jet/5:10PM Sahara flight.

If you are a nice, clean and organized guy/girl with good table manners, I might just allow you to spend the time in between with me at my house at Guwahati...maybe I will even drive you down to the LGB airport...all free of cost !!!! ;D ;D
