Yes,  his name is Sidhartha Deb, whose novel "The Point of Return" has already been published by Harper Collins. It seems he is originally from Shillong. He also sometimes writes book reviews for NewYork Times.

An interesting passage in the book talks about Silchar like this...

"Silchar was...heavily settled by immigrants from the villages of East Bengal who had brought with them a sense of identity that allowed for neither growth nor change. They were defined not by what they were - that was uncertain - but by what they were not. They were Indians because they were not Bangladeshis, Hindus because they were not Muslims, Bengalis because they were not Assamese."

When she join Holy cross? Probably before my time. Even though Mr. Deb does not have anything good to talk about Silchar  we take pride in him. I enjoyed reading Point of return. I can relate to a lot of things.

Dear Confused,

I have gone through the review of the book.  I haven’t read the book yet, you mentioned about something not good about Silchar is written in the book. Is it about the administration hurdles or bad civic amenities or is it the attitude of people at Silchar that is written in the book ? Just curious to know. Is it the same thing that Himadri   quoted in reply # 1 or something more than that ?

Confused,
If Debjani Sen joined before your time, then you should have known her.

oops! I meant to say after my time.
I read the book. What I really liked was the fact that there were somany things I could relate to. But this novel mentions Silchar very briefly when the main character visits his relatives in Silchar.  Those descriptions of Silchar are not painted in very positive color. But I won't say that he strayed from truth. Is more like how you look a glass and say it is half empty and half full. His tone is rather pessimistic. He talks about dismal road conditions, attitude of people etc.  But as I said, very briefly. Most of the plot revolves around Shillong.

Every small things you do become so important when you are living outside of your country. Mass people always tend to visualise your country through you. Whatever you will be doing, people will tell citizen of that country is like that. And this is specially true when that thing is negative or less positive. And whites have always looked down we people of coloured skin.

Then, a drop of poison is enough to pollute a glass of milk. I cannot tell in this glass everything is good besides that drop of poison. People grasp bad things fast and remember that for longer time. If I am a writer and writing a book for the international community, it becomes my responsibilty to do things to uplift the position of my country, and not the contrary.

And then, my parents are very bad and I am very good sort of thing doesn't work that well, as people knows that in a mango tree they can get mango only. An intelligent person hides the spot of his body ... its natural, isn't it? And then, when we live outside, we all are ambassadors of our country, if we have a minimum of self respect ...

But then again, its also a fact that some people earn their bread by marketing their own incapabilities, Indian street beggers are the best example of this. Its me to choose, how do I want to earn my livelihood? By addifying my identity, or by doing the contrary !!  :)
