NERICIQ is one of the best thing to happen in Silchar. The Pride, emotions and excitement in NERICIQ is unforgettable. The feelings that it generates when you sit on the centerstage amdist cheering crowd is unimaginable. I am surprised to know NERICIQ is not organized this days. Silchar was the quiz capital of North east once, and NERICIQ is no longer happening in Silchar !! Anirban da, Jimut, Ravi Patwa are you listening !! |

thanks for all the replies...i am a jyotian myself...and have had the pleasure of participating in NERICIQ a couple of times as well..it makes you real sad to think that the event is not happening any more.however,an inter north east quiz did happen last year...some irrepressible guys from rec rustled it up...and also brought in the inimitable jimut and rupam to ask the q's. a short something about what bachal says, most of the people mentioned are either not in silchar,or are now old enough to be very busy with their jobs and businesses...so perhaps the reason for nericiq not being held is obvious. lets hope when we get back home during the pujaswe again have a very good reason to while away three of our days at district library again. keep the posts coming! |

yes hendrix...your concern does reflect those of a person who has been associated with quizzing in certain ways...talking of the 'inimitable' whoever ;D ;D I am sure you know whatever other inimitable things this inimitable person did in his very own inimitable ways during and after the quiz ;D |

Was going through maha-adda and happened to notice this particular thread. Probably is one of the sadder things to know. NERICIQ indeed was one of the very nice things in Silchar. I have some of the fondest memories of Silchar revolving around NERICIQ. Hanging around the pan stall outside the district library in between the prelim rounds, watching the girls, having lenghty discussions on the relative merits of the hostesses, and of course the quiz and the debate. Those were really great times. Makes me sad that the youngsters now are missing out on the fun. It certainly would be great if someone could revive the whole thing. Silchar was really nice when it came to quizzing and I really hope that it remains that way. To me NERICIQ and NERICID are a part of the Silchar which I had known and had spent my 4 years in. So I guess I am slightly selfish in wanting NERCIQ and NERICID to be resurrected because it is a part of my personal picture of Silchar but I suspect that I am not alone. So if anybody in Silchar is listening, it indeed would be nice to hear again, some day on this discussion board that NERICIQ and NERICID is up and running again.

95 Nericiq Final... And someone answered, Why 'Bloody Marry' is so called. And another one related to 10 Commandants and 'Thou Shall /Shallnot' funda...
That was your First Nericiq.. ami I right ? You, Soumen and Anupam stunned all and went into the Finals.
Are you the same Bashuman ?
I guess so. (Sure guesses like this would have given some hard earned points in the good old quizzing days.)

thanks for the posts.people.well,lets all hope that a jyotian in silchar reads all this.anyway,i remember a guy having his name dramatically called out on stage by ravi patwa in the spotlight just before a nericiq final...and someone walking up squinting in the glare and all the while ferociously chewing a piece of gum to bits.someone also won both nericiq and nericiq in the same year..... |

Yeah it is the same bashuman. Thank you guys. It is very very flattering to see oneself still remembered by a few and thanks for remembering. It is amazing that someone should even remember the questions of a NERICIQ held nearly 7 years ago. Thanks again. Those NERICIQ and NERICIDs were great some of the best times in my life. and nothing and really, nothing would be greater to sit in another NERICIQ/NERICID, even as a part of the audience. Please let us have them back. |

Yeah and I also remember that you, anupam and Soumen finished second behind Jimut's team in the REC Qualifying rounds..
Nobody expected you all to reach the Finals in ReC qualifier.. leave alone Nericiq..
Boy, you snatched a lot of points from us.. in the Nericiq Final..
And that was my last Nericq... |

really nice to see so many postings on quiz here, in a season which has seen a breakdown in nericiq's tradition we all should indeed feel the trauma associated with it. but the good thing was the other NE quiz organoised by the students of REC Silchar and considering the fact that Silchar nowadays doesnt have quality quizzing at all, their effort becomes all the more important. thanks to Jimut and Rupam for a fantastic performance in carrying the quiz on their shoulders. despite lacking thw glamour of NERICIQ, in its coonceptual year, CANDEQUE proved to be by far technically the best quiz Silchar has ever seen and it will remain the herbinger of the use of computers and software in quizzing in silchar and I hope time has come for us exjyotians to keep carrying the mantle of quizzing on our shoulders. a few young lads from REC SIlchar have survived an almost extinct culture in Silchar, and let us veteren jyoti members come together and help it revive further. |

93 Nericiq, saw a sobbing lad called Jimut crashing out of Semifinal.. who knew, Jimut would oneday rule Nericiq..
Same year's Final, Jadavpur swept Nericiq.. (Though rumors tell that most of the questions were calcutta quiz circle repeats...). But nothing could stop the legendary Anirban from REC to win the Superstar round.., A direct answer to why James bond was sprinkling peeper in Vodka in the flim 'To Russia with love' sealed Vinayak's (JU) fate.. I also heard the silliest question to be asked in a quiz final.. 'What is LLB in Calcutta ?' ... answer is Lord of Last bench !!! This was one of the Directs to REC... (I belived that the question was instantly cooked up by QM Soumyadeep).. ironically the answer came from audience..!!

It's really sad to know things are in such bad shape as far as Nericiq and Nericid is concerned. When we began Debator's Guild in silchar, many of you may not even have heard it's name I am sure .Both ravi and myself took pains to keep up the culture of debating. These such efforts need to be revived. I do not want to frustrate the quizzards but still would say that Quiz is much more transient in nature and upmarket and as a result off and on it loses market. Contrarily Debating is of permanent interest and so I think it should be revived by strengthening the culture of Debate, which in turn shall revive quiz as well. |

I do not remember Jimuth crying after he crashed out in the first round of NERICIQ 1993. And indeed 1993's NERICIQ did raise a few questions about the integrity of the quizmasters and its the only time I remember it happen in the good 11 year history of the event. I hope it does not happen again ;)
And as regards to Jimuth ruling the NERICIQ goes, we ( all who have been part of NERICIQ and quizzing circle) think nobody even comes closer to Anirban (Paul) and his team in regards to that. They won the trophy 3 times in a row and the fourth time they got beaten by luck as well as by unanswered questions ??? Where as Jimuth managed to win it twice in six tries :) . But yes, if you consider the on/off stage activities, then Jimuth definitely has the edge over the rest of the gang and I beleive only Alok Bhattacharya would have given Jimuth a good run for his money ;D
I also remember Souymadeep being not one of the quizmaster for NERICIQ 93. It was Rathindra and another not so tall guy with specs (I do not remember his name) and LLB came out of the bag of Rathin. The other thing I remember was a special round in the FINALS where the person who answered the question got a choclate bar to throw to a person(girls ;D ) of his choice from the audience. That round still remains a mystery as regards to its speciality and intent. Luckily Rathin did not try the same trick in his future turnups ;D
The other thing I can not forget was the western audio round in the FINALS. The sound of the distorted/remixed version of Beethoven's 'Fur Elise' still rings a bell. I am sure Beethoven would have turned up in his grave upon listening to this version of his compositon ( if he was not physically challenged though ) ;) Souls Asylum's 'Runaway Train' was another one ... all in all that western audio final round still remains the poorest of its kind in the history of the event.

does anybody know a guy in cal called kingshuk neogy?have been talking to him quite often in recent weeks, the guy writes a column called 'copy write'in the campus supplement of the statesman every tuesday.however, that is not important, what is interesting that he actually set most of the questions that rathin brought into nericiq in those halcyon days.this fact,of course, wont help any of you in any way,but then quizzing is fundamentally about useless trivia, isnt it? ;D |

I think I cannot give this thread an ignore...posting something after a long time...and again remembered that I haven't yet changed that hugely offesive password that Premasish had set for me... >:( ;D I guess I don't have to further harp on how the adrenalin still flows at the mention of NERICIQ/CID...and it comes as no surprise to see that a lot of people still feel the same...I think most of the people who have posted here are quizzards but I am very sure that an even greater number of people, who have never sat for the quiz but have all the while enjoyed the action as the supremely knowlegeable and loveable audience will have millions of happy memories..I actually found it very strange in the beginning...but I think I now realize that this event had the unique quality of providing happiness and joy to everyone - the participants, the audience and also the organizers... I first thought that "Those were the days.." was Rajib...didn't know that there are some other people also who can exactly remember what questions were asked by whom and who answered them in what way and in which year...but I think I finally have one detail that Rajib doesn't remember but I do...that other "specs-wala" QM was called Sudipto Mazumdar and he had long straight hair which necessitated frequent "jhatkas"...ha ha !! victory at last !! BTW, it was hilarious to see that old habits die hard...Rajib is still as venomous with his complaints and accurate to the T about poor questions and Rupam is ever alert for an opportunity to scout for questions... ;D One more thing...that LLB question wasn't answered with Lord of Last Bench...my classmate in HCS, Suman Sipani ( should be married by now ) answered it with " Ladki leke bhaga " and even got a prize for that..I remember it because I was sitting right in front of her...my only NERICIQ final from the spectator's seat...predictably grumbling about what would have been had we been on stage...me, Rajib and Joy were all pretty crest fallen...as if the world had come to an end...and I still feel, we would have beaten JU that night if we were good enough to make the finals...that remains the only quiz which I remember fairly well...I don't think JU's "unfair" advantage would have bothered us too much...and to top it all, Anirban-da was surprisingly out-of-form...that defeat still rankles...I don't know whether to thank or curse "Those were the days..."( who r u ??) for reminding me...and I wish I had cried...that would have made this memory very poignant indeed...Rajib , remember "Chabi" ?? >:(
I think you will all pardon my trip down memory lane...I think we should start a thread on memories of NERICIQ were only incidents will be discussed... I really feel that the present Jyotians should get there act together and bring back NERICIQ/CID to life...I mean I don't care what heaven and earth you move..I think we all have the right to just blatantly demand from all of you to help a lot of people experience bliss for 3 days a year...I think we all now realize how valueable a big bunch of very very special people who constituted Jyoti those days were...I dare not name them because even if I miss out on a single name, I'll be doing gross injustice to their efforts all these years...I think what was important was these people really loved their quizzes and debates, were hugely industrious and above all successful individuals who resided mostly in Silchar...I myself have , like most others , moved out of Silchar but I cannot believe our town has run out of people who would take over the mantle...I think those enthu-filled young fellows from REC showed last year that it can be done, and done well... Now all I can say to the present day Jyotians is that you've got to stage the event this year...as for Jyotians who ruled our hearts in the 90s...can't you do it again for all the people whom you've given so much to earlier? I don't think we can give you anything worthy in return, but I think we all know that you all would like NERICIQ/CID to happen again too !!! |

I think I might as well put down the answers...surprising how Rajib can get hold these questions from the US...ek din dekhailai nani !! ;D ;D I don't think I personally would've got more then 23-25...anything more would've been possible if all the atrocious guesses (which are definitely necessary, going by the questions) proved lucky... Shovon Charbarty,Rupam and me did quite a bit of analysis of these 50 questions. Overall, I'm higly dissappointed ??? >:( Not only because I couldn't score much but also because I wouldn't even LIKE to get a decent score in such a bizzare set of questions, most of which were down-right boring and extremely esoteric...of course, the opinions are all solely my own ;) Heard somebody somewhere in India cracked a 40 !! Can anyone beat that ??Anyway...here goes...
1.Which South Asian capital is located at the mouth of the river Kelani Ganga ? -Colombo.
2.Which singer first worked as music composer in the Marathi film ‘Ram Ram Pahuna’ in 1950 ? -Lata Mangeshkar.
3.Which Moghul emperor was crowned at Kalanaur in 1556 ? -Akbar.
4.Which Parsee word is often used in classical songs meaning ‘Imagination’ ? -The stupidest question...Khayal !!!
5.Which European country controles/administers the Mediterranean island of Corsica ? -France.
6.Who represented Amalapuram constituency in AP in the 13th. Loksabha? - G M C 'Ba-layogi ( uff !! what amazing word-filtration at this site !! I hope this spells out correctly this time!)
7.Who is the Director of the Oscar winning foreign language film ‘No Man’s Land? - Danis Tanovich.
8.Which Mahabharat character was supposed to have cried with the sound of the neighing of a horse during his birth? -another dumb question...Ashwatthama !!
9.Who was the only daughter of King Dasharath ? - Shanta.
10.Which British actress, famous face of Estee Lauder has a newborn son named Damien Charles? - Now this is more up my sleeve...Elizabeth Hurley !!
11.Which actor, associated with the film Godfather has the first names as Alfred James ? - Al Pacino.
12.In 1781, William Herschel discovered a new planet which he named ‘The Georgium Sidus’ in honour of King George III. By what name we know it today ? - Uranus.
13.In the book ‘The case of the velvet claws, he appeared for the first time as a lawyer. Which character ? -Perry Mason.
14.She was born as daughter of Lord Glamis, 14th. Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne and named Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes Lyon. How did we know her ? -The Queen Mother ( ki joghonno question !!)
15.Which is the headquarter of Panch Mahal district of Gujarat ? - Godhra.

The answer to the 29th question is correct. It is Rahul Dravid who was one of the five Wisden cricketers of 2000.Between Dilip Vengsarkar(1987) and VVS Laxman(2002), there have been three other Indian cricketers nominated by Wisden, besides Dravid. Azharuddin(1991), Anil Kumble(1996) and Sachin Tendulkar(1997) |

The questions are pretty much okay considering the type of quiz MASTERMIND is. But one question appeared vague/incomplete to me.
24.Which company is at no.1 spot as per latest Fortune 500 list? I am not sure whether this is an exact reproduction of the question and if it is then the question appears to be incomplete . Forbes ranks a company in a scale of four parameters and they are SALES, PROFIT, ASSETS & MARKET VALUE. And then FORBES assigns something called a super rank to each company based on the sum of the value of the four parameters for that company. The company with the least sum total walks away with the honors.
Here are the top 10 listings for 2002 ...
SR COMPANY SLR PFR ASR MVR STIR | | | | | | 1 Citigroup 6 2 1 6 -- 15 1 General Electric 5 3 6 1 -- 15 3 ExxonMobil 2 1 29 3 -- 35 4 American Int Gr 11 14 8 9 -- 42 5 Bank of America 17 9 4 21 -- 51 6 Wal-Mart Stores 1 10 44 4 -- 59 7 Fannie Mae 19 12 2 30 -- 63 8 IBM 8 6 42 10 -- 66 9 Philip Morris Cos 9 4 43 18 -- 74 10 SBC Communications 25 8 34 12 -- 79 where SR is SUPER RANK SLR is SALES RANK PFR is PROFIT RANK ASR is ASSET RANK MVR is MARKET VALUE RANK STIR is SUM TOTAL OF INDIVIDUAL RANKS
So I guess Wal-Mart, Citigroup, GE and ExxonMobil will be all valid answers.

Citigroup is the largest company in the Forbes list. But in the Fortune list, Walmart is the largest company. As the question pertains to the "Fortune 500" list, and not the "Forbes 500" list, I think there should be no confusion as to what is the correct answer. It is Wal-Mart.
Here's a snippet from Fortune's website.. http://www.fortune.com/lists/F500/index.html
America's Largest Corporations
Rank Company Revenues ($ millions) 1 Wal-Mart Stores 219,812.0 2 Exxon Mobil 191,581.0 3 General Motors 177,260.0 4 Ford Motor 162,412.0 5 Enron 138,718.0 6 General Electric 125,913.0 7 Citigroup 112,022.0 8 ChevronTexaco 99,699.0 9 Intl. Business Machines 85,866.0 10 Philip Morris 72,944.0 |

Hi all!!
Came to the silchar.com after a long time....and am so happy to see all the discussion on NERICID/ NERICIQ.
Incidentally, I have the honour of being the First winner of NERICID...and, on the august flanks of the legendary Anirban Paul, have picked up the NERICIQ trophy twice (or thrice?), and also the AICIQ organised by NECF. Nilanjan (that curly-haired maverick) was our third mate!!
Jyoti did a wonderful job with all these events, and the 'mahaul' used to be so lively and charged up....am really sad to know that there is no more activity by them. Have met so many interesting people at the District Library Audi (wish had kept in touch with at least some of them!!), and ate so many "mughlai parathas" at Paradise (next to the Bus Stand, is it still there??)...its a pity these things are no more.
Can any of the younsters take the responsibility again? I pledge to help in whatever way I can....would love to go back to Silchar for the event.
Hope someone is listening.... |

Nericiq set the standards and others followed suit. Nericiq composed the score while others lifted the tunes. Nericiq is in our hearts while others are in the mind. Don't mind that was nericiq for us in silchar. Nice to see the 'return of the jewel thief'
This question is dedicated to the phenomenon.. "This thing comes in two varieties. One accepts luminiscence while the other does accept both luminiscence and chrominance"-What are they?

Great to have your response!! But, who is it? Please help me recollect...
Nice hearing that you are trying to revive the glorious tradition..let me know what I can do. Maybe I can help with some sponsorship....or, better still, as you suggest, it would be my honour to come there in a "different role" (your words!!).
Is Ravi still in Silchar? I am sure most of the old folks I knew during my years (1990-95) would have left the town by now...

JBDL, I did not know you in 1993, During that 93 Nericiq, my friend Rana Gupta pointed to you and said that was Jimut, the most promising quizzard in Silchar. I still remember, how upset you were after crashing out. I too crashed out of a different Semi, had to enjoy the Final from audiance chair, you were sitting in front of us, and I was surprised that you could answer most of the questions in that controversial 93 final. Oh, I remember the semi where we crashed out, we had to score a direct and the last question asked to us was " what was unique to the USSR team in Moscow(? or some other) olympic ", The answer was "half of the team was pregnant !!"
I had a lot of encounter with your team after you joined REC, and I still remember the 1995 Nericiq Pre qualifier in REC, We were leading by 20 points, You answerd all 5, in one of the rounds and snatched the title. Anirban Paul was the QM. One of the question in that round was , "Which inventor got his clue after he dreamt that cannibals attacked him with arrow", Answer- Elias Hoe, He was stuck on how to thread his needle in Sewing machine". I remember asking you after the Finals, "Jimut how could u guess that ?" You said "no.. I remember that from a childhood edition of Kishore Bharati"
There were so many good guesses that you made in the Nericiq. Here is one of them, " Why is Red cloth used in Bull fighting though Bull is color blind "
I saw PR Jha's message today, and that reminds me one of the most famous guess he made, That was Rengco Fest 1992-93, QM was Ravi Patwa, Question was " I start in Century, my middle is a Zodiac, I have a pet in between and I end with egyptian goddess of Sun", who am I. cleopetra...
Bashuman, was my another favourite quizzard, While posting under the name 'Those were Days', I thought Bashu will recognize me, as I had given enough clues in Reply to Bashu's posting.
By the way, I am Nilanjan Chanda, I used to be a part of REC Team comprising Me, Biswabijoy and Rana Gupta. We could not win Nerciq for once, but the Nericiq was the Best thing that I enjoyed in my REC stay.. Those certainly were Days..!!

JBDL, I am here in Calcutta. Left cartooning after leaving REC, had a ill luck to see a photograph of that blank 'Graffiti' board hanging in college.. how painful was that.. Heard Mechronicle is still running. Rana is in delhi, try him at rana_gpt@hotmail.com or india617@del6.vsnl.net.in. Biswabijoy is having a wonderful Quzzing time in Calcutta, he won atleast 6-7 quizzes here.
You know, Yesterday when I saw Oliver Khan after the match, I could understand his pain.. The same thing happened to me (or everyone) after failing to win the Nericiq, the World Cup ( :) :) ) of quizz.. for us. We had to wait till next year.
Keep in Touch. |

Ya " Graffiti " is a lost tradition now sadly...we tried our best during our days and did succeed to some extent...but perhaps after the Valentines Day issue in 1997, which I, Debal-da and Aniruddha ( Jethu ) put together all by ourselves, the board has been empty.
Anyway, it so happens that I will be in Kolkata this weekend. I will reach on Friday (5th)and possibly leave on Monday morning.I'm not free on Saturday but Sunday I will be.Please give me a contact number so that we may atleast talk and if possible, meet up.
See ya. |

there's a good possibility that nericiq's going to be held this year..nilanjanda of jyoti called up my home to ask what we had done with the running trophy after the last nericiq in 2000.....it of course is there in gcc (where it has not been since 1989?)......and could those in the know please shout out who the qm is going to be? |

Good to hear that NERICIQ is going to be back. Probably Rajib Saha will return in time from the US to do the honours. This I know because he hinted so to me. As for the date, well...that's still not known even to the probable QM himself. Let's wait and watch...and hope we all have enough space to be there to relive those magical 3 days... |

That guy earns in US dollars...drives a Ford Mustang ( and God knows what else ;D)...and probably is the best person with the best facilities to carry out a sensational quiz that Silchar is bound to remember for quite sometime...whenever that happens I'm sure it'll be prudent not to give it a miss if possible...I'll try my best to be there...will advice everyone else to do the same...after all, it'll probably happen around the Puja holidays...so do find the time...and hope Rajib manages it as well as we expect him to...atleast the on-stage part ;D ;D |

Its good to see your holistic opinion (which most of the time expose more than what you say in words....) But don't you think the figurative use of silent sarcasm will be more appealing if you manage to start a column like"malice towards one and all"(Kushwant singh style.. ;D)in some popular newspaper.. Its a paradox to me sometime......why even after all the years of growing up ....seasoning ourselves with cosmetic degrees....interacting with good people..we cannot overcome the malady of mud throwing at each other ..... Just hope "we shall overcome some day ....."

Dear Sir
Are you settling some old score with me ? I can't remember having too many enemies in my short lifetime...what is it about me that has rubbed you on the wrong side ? Is it wrong if I speak in favour of somebody whom I've known for many years ( definitely more than you )and who has been a very very dear friend through thick and thin ? If you want to unneccesarily read between the lines I really can't do much about it.You can't stop me from giving praise where I feel it is due...likewise you are entitled to your own opinions...the talent and goodness of my friend and quiz partner for all my quizzing years is beyond question...and I'll go all out to support him in whatever way possible...if you still have a problem with that, I really don't care...I'm looking forward to a great quiz in Silchar after a long long time...as I am sure a lot of people who are genuine quiz-lovers are...I hope Rajib sees this and gets even more charged up to give us an even better quiz than he has planned before...and I would also like both myself and you to be there...even if it is only with a "guest" login ;D ;D |

Jimut ... I was wondering if i should write this (Rupam has already threatened and raised questions about my opinion..a bit autocratic ???..perhaps he enjoys only his liberty and wants people to turn blind even to the most obvious things in world ..i guess he also has misunderstood )....but just wanted to rescue you and Rupam out of a probable misconception. It was neither personel nor inimical when i wrote the previous posting. It was not my affinity for someone ...nor it is my allergy to fun and humour....and i guess i can still appreciate good things happening around. I have been an admirer of quality and sincere efforts.I have seen both of you (perhaps more closely than even you might have understood or felt)and also seen you people evolve .....My motivataion was my simple sense of happiness that NERICIQ is again happening and we should do whatever we can to help Jyoti and other organizers.... I heard Jimut and Rupam Organized a fantastic QUIZ last year and it was a grand success....I was far away but felt delighted to know that friends are making it happen in their own humble way.
As i was reading this thread ,the news of NERICIQ happening again... and vetrans like Priya da coming forward with nice suggestions made me feel proud that NERICIQ is something which is really sublime..It used to be a confluence of talent, effort, hardwork and also lot of fun..and i guess it will perhaps be like that whenever it happens.
But both Rupam and Jimut have written someting to raise a crusade perhaps ! Jimut ..as a person who admires your capabilities a lot (..its not a flattery !);i was not cynical when i said something to you.I still believe you are bold enough "within" to acknowledge to yourself what you really understood from what i had written.Healthy criticism lays a road map for self improvement. Why did you mistook it as "settling personel score ?"...I know i never did it with that intention...I do not feel it necessary to certify what i am saying and least important is to tell the world who i am ...but the jimut i knew may be 10 years back is substantially different from jimut of today...Many times in past people have raised eyebrows (remember GC college.. REC stuffs ..REC College elections...Etc etc),but i always avoided making conclusion.I thought may be those steps were another means of evolution(progressive or retrogressive ..i ponder now !!) and greater realizations. But i was honestly disheartened that even all these years after college ...the datum of thought process is still pivoted on trivial things ..or may be my potential to look at things needs re-examination...I just wanted to suggest that tide over the trivial things in life and take yourself or rather give yourself a chance to reach where you are destined to go..AND YOU KNOW YOU ARE NOT WHERE YOU SHOULD BE.....This again is a friendly advise...like it or dislike it ..truth as i feel can never be sugar coated .
And for RUPAM ..a bit of research revealed that you are in XIM ...Happy to know that ....Hope you come out of XIM in a better mould to appreciate and honour others "freedom of opinion" and be more rational and judgemental in exposing verbosity and seconding someone....I do not know if i will be in Silchar during NERICIQ ..but my best wishes are to one and all who are closely or even remotely associated with the philosophy of QUIZZING... Let NERICIQ continue to be the epicentre of "Our Inquisitive" Barak valley ...
Apology to Jimut and Rupam (..in case you mis-read again this posting as an attempt to turnish your reputation...) |

I remember the NERICIQ 1993 referred to by bireswar...more than that I remember the GC qualifiers that year...was one of the best quizzes I have ever been to..the GC qualifiers that year...me Rajiv and Amit...bireswar, subha and surojit, rajibda, jimutda and premasish I believe...or was it raka di premasish and suprateekda...some very good qwuestions...and biru had goofed the 'mango census' thing :D ;D I remember that distinctly...but really was a classic quiz |

Nice to c my name pop up in the NERICIQ thread. A li'l correction for Rupam. I wasnt a part of the 93 GCC team. I represented GCC from '89 to '92 first with Supratik and Devojyoti and later with Debarati and Supratik.Surprised to hear that the kids now r deprived of such a wonderful exposure. Hope and pray that NERICIQ resuscicates sometimes soon. |

As I was browsing my way through this long thread, I could not help becoming more and more nostalgic. NERICIQ was like a festival. Boy! It was fun wasn’t it? I am pretty curious to know if Jyoti still exists. It was a wonderful organization filled with very energetic people. We used to have our meetings in Adharchand School every Sunday. Which is incidentally my alma mater too. We had a journal called Juvenilia. Rajeev-da came up with that suggestion. Publishing was easy but selling those magazines as any little magazines were a very hard nut to crack. Fund rising for NERICIQ could not be blamed as uneventful too. In one of the occasions I had the misfortune of asking one businessman in our locality for some donations. He turned out rather inquisitive. I had trouble convincing him of what we were doing. Lastly, I gave up and slyly told him that it was Quiz puja. He happily donated 200/- Well if Andhrites can worship AIDS mata, then what should deter us from worshipping quiz mata. India is such a great country. My first participation in NERICIQ was in 1990 for REC. You will be amazed to know that it was even before the classes (read ragging) started. Somehow I was able to fool couple of rexians as an authority in Quiz. We were knocked out in first round with the lowest score and don’t ask me what happened when the classes started. |

Well, I am trying to pull all those people into this discussion who were also related to NERICIQ, but in a little bit different fashion. I suppose we represent a quite big chunk of the total crowd. Don't get afraid, I am not referring to any revolutionaries it is the back-seat-sitters. And it was not the love for quiz; it was some thing different, which used to force us to go there. Definitely, we used to prefer the "last benches", we used to smoke, used to make comments, used to give whistles and some times the good girls and guys used to get annoyed because of us. Probably we wanted that, who knows? ;D But, then it was our own way of getting associated with the NERICIQ. NERICIQ had a different appeal for us. True, sometimes even our gray cells could sense the challenge and could manage to spit out couple of answers and of course we also used to get the kick out of that in our own gang. But mostly the motivating factors were all the glamour girls of Silchar, the elites of Silchar and of course the urge of becoming a bit "standard". But, in every sense NERICIQ was simply superb, I assume we also miss that now. |

Debngshu Goswami, Parth Guha, Debraj Dey.. right ?
If I am not mistaken you were the other REC Team in 1993 Nerciq Final. (I can remember Debraj answering what is common to Newton, Baseball etc :-- :) ans- Diamond !!)
Nice to remember the healthy competitions we use to have...
By the way, can anybody tell me if Quizzes still happen in SMC. Those guys were great organizers... It was a fantastic experiance to sit in their Silver Jublee Quiz and couple of other quizzes. Soumyadeep was the QM in Silver Jublee quiz. And Ravi Patwa hosted few others.

I dont think the meds now organize quizzes of that stature anymore...probably their normal fest quiz qithout much fanfare...but I dont remember anything big in smch after 1993

The is this one quiz which I will always remember as the most fundoo quiz inn terms of the questions asked that I have ever been too. I also remember it because of the stale ambiance in which it was conducted...where the quiz itself and not the additional pyrotechniques ruled... I was in my twelveth then at GCC....remember having bunked my chemistry practicals (needless to say it invited wrath of the big M) to participate in an REC quiz...I till today regard this quiz as one of the best that I have been to...three quizmasters...anirbanda, nilanjanda and priyaranjanda...all three of them...in the old auditorium...a very dimly glowing bulb(not even a tubelight),,, a handful of people in the audience ...almost countable...no gimmics...just a single microphone that was being passed around...no big speakers...no hostesses...nothing...just a simple old fashioned quiz in which the stress was really on the mindgame and not on anything else... I still remember having answered a question on 'TOSCA' and one perhaps on 'the only team to have come back from a follow-on to win a test match' (India hadnt achieved that feat then)....also this now reminds me of a couple of good quizzards that REC boasted of then ...other than the ones mentioned already in this thread...like harish krishnan...there was this guy called suryakiran or something...who used to smoke right in the stage...alok b lal...of course and a couple of others... Although many of you were there...I don not know if you remember this particular quiz....but I dont know why...the dimly lit audi and the superb standard of questions in that quiz still reminds me of this one with a special sentiment... PS We ;D didnt win the quiz ...came third ;D ;D ;D...but during those times, for a GC college team to do that in REC was a feat by itself. indeed....those were the days,,,and those were the daze as well. |

I remember that quiz too. It was real good one. Jimut and Joyjeet were my team members if i remember correctly. I also wonder whether it was the quiz that was held in honor of the guy (Prabir ?? I can not recollect his name ) One question that I still remember that Priyada asked was 'In US custom, what is meant by left is right and right is wrong ?' Also Nilanjanda's western audio was simply marvellous. He had clips of Black Sabbath, GNR's rendetion of Bob Dylan's Knockin On Heavens Door, Bizet's Carmen (which I did manage to answer and still remember a stunned Nilanjanda asking me later on how did I knew that) Also Anirbanda's fundoo rich questions were simply superb. One of the question was 'What is the difference between Sci-fi and SF ?' I do not remember who won the quiz. But it was a real delight to participate in such a brilliant quiz. |

Yaaa Maalik ! Tumrar ek memory nani ! Even after all of you supplying so many details about that quiz, I only seem to have a very vague remembrance of that night...kintu proshno hoilo, who actually WON it ? I don't think we did, hoile mono thaklo ne..."Sci-fi and SF " and "Left is right..." iguli mono aase...
Good to hear from Debanshu-da after a long long time...where are you these days ?
As for the SMC quiz...I remember that quiz well...I think that was their Golden Jubilee...Anirban-da's team won...and we probably ended up 4th or 5th...ekta medal-o paisilam...don't know where that has gone now.
I also remember one the next year , 1994 at SMC...me, Rajib and Priya-da...probably our last quiz together...I would say that was the best quiz Ravi-da ever did...good entertaining stuff...the gallery were very impressed...plus as expected, very very good looking girls on stage as well...still remember a Punjabi female...was many years our senior then...who did the honours. Don't remember the questions as usual, but Ravi had put a round something in the lines of " Wine and Women..." probably a first in Silchar...I also remember all three of us being in pretty decent form ( definitely a rarity for any team)...I guess we won by quite a handsome margin...don't remember who came next...perhaps Supratik-da, Raka-di and Debarati-di...wonder where she is these days ? |

Biswabijoy, Rana and me came second. We scored a lot many in the last round to make it to the 2nd place from 5-6 th position. The audiance claps and appalause in the last round still rang in my ears when we finished second after answering the last question. What is the Italian word for two beautiful mountains over a valley : The answer is Lollobrigida, -- for Gina Lollobrigida. I still cherish the moment when the very next day, few SMC guys and girls at Pauls Restuarent recognised us, came to our table and congratulated us for that last round photo finish. Nothing great to boast about... but that is a sweet memory.
Yes that was PR Jhas last quiz with Jimut's team. He answered the What's common to question -- about two persons who scored full score in GMAT. Also the one reagrding who said to whom " For how long will you sell coloured waters" - :: - Steve jobs to Jhon Scully, documented in the book from Pepsi to Apple.
And I still remember that quiz for a embarrassing moment. There were some Individual Team round concept. Quiz master will ask every individual teams a few question while others take the audience seat. Ravi asked one team. " The Unit of Beauty is Helen , What is the charecterestic one should possess to be at least one Helen". Ravi also commented " I am sure no lady in the audience possesses that charecterestic". The question came back to the audience, and while people were making wild guesses, I raised my hand and shouted " She has to be a virgin..!!!".. All eyes were on me.. SMC guys and girls were stunned,, I realised what I have done and quitely sneaked outside the door... The right answer probably was - her face should inspire a merchant to sail thousand ships.. or may be something else.. but I was so embarrased that I did not care to listen to the answer properly. |

The Power of People.. The Power of Thoughts and ideas.. Hendrixisgod started the topic, Then came overwhelming response, nostalgia, wishes...
...and Nerciq is revived.
The new website will be very exciting I suppose. Those of us sitting thousands of mile away will have to click the links to get a feel of the event. I guess . there will be periodic updates of the positions and score during the event. And I guess, this time, teams will check their schedule online..
Reminds me of those tension packed rush at the auditorium, to catch a glimpse of that blackboard stranded outside, just to check who is pitted against whom..and howmany strong teams are clustered with us..
All the Best Nericiq. |

I think Jyoti started in 1990-91? by the initiative of Ravi Patoa . I too was one of the founder members by the persuation of Ravida(thankfully) and we met in Adharchand School the first day to think of a name of the club and the constitution. We all had one name to propose. Was it Amar Khandelwal uncle who came with the name jyoti? Then was the part of selecting the emblem,it took hours of discussion and debating of ideas. I still remember a few names who were with me but cannot remember all . cheers |

I think that post should most definitely be by Tuli-di, i.e.Debjani Dey (nee Bhowmick)...right ? Are you still in Switzerland ?? I feel Tuli-di and all the others involved at that time should contribute more so that a well compiled history can be put up...I guess the guys handling www.nericiq.tk are already working towards that and all your inputs shuld be of great help. After all, we were all chutto-chutto chelera ;D ;D with fuzzy memories at that time. Ya...Ravi-da probably should get the most credit for his vision...I might also add that he likes to be spelled as "RAVI PATWA"...infact, he gets very irritated if somebody spells his name the way Tuli-di did ;D I can't say with certainty, but perhaps 1990 saw the first NERICIQ.As far as I can remember, the first NERICIQ was probably held at RDI Hall. Probably Ravi-da was the QM...don't know for sure as I wasn't a part of it...Joy Bhattacharjee was the first out-station QM in the second edition...I think Premasish will be able to tell us better about that as he attended that quiz and even got the audience prize for best answer ( Red Flag Act was it ?? ) I guess since 1991, the District Library Audi has been the venue for all editions except in 1994 when it was held at Gandhi Bagh. That quiz undoubtedly saw the largest audience ever in a NERICIQ final...I guess there would have been anything between 1500 to 2000 people !!! Can't remember all the winners but I think I'll take a shot till the time period I was in touch...I am not very good at remembering the finer details but I know a lot of people who'll be able to tell all of us with close to perfect accuracy...let's hope this get's them started...
1991 - REC ( Anirban Paul's dream team )or was it the year before? 1992 - Cotton College ( Senjam Rajshekar & Co...REC boycotted for some reason I don't remember) 1993 - JU (scored some 195 in the finals but Anirban-da was Superstar !! ) 1994 - Dumdum Motijeel College ( at Gandhi Bagh...also the first time Extempore Speech was introduced ) 1995 - REC 1996 - Just can't remember...we came 3rd and another REC team led by Bashuman came 2nd.Still remember the last question which would have given us 2nd spot...whoever would be interested in knowing that somebody died after a tortoise fell on his head ??? 1997 - REC 1998 - I was out of Silchar by then...was it AU ??? 1999- I think REC ( Debu Bhatt's Team ) 2000 - Don't know...was is AU again ?? |

Dear Jimut, you guessed me right, and I am still in swiss presently doing my PhD ??? As I go through this page fond memories engulfs me. The first cannot say Nericiq more of inter college quiz was held in RDI hall ravida was the quiz master. The 2nd one was in District Lib Audi ,Joy Bhattacharjee the quiz master and i was one of the hostess and nivedita deb the other.Raka, Supratik's team was the favorite team from GC and there was good teams from REC one of Priyaranjan Jha's team ? Jimut and all were in waiting to join the college to be able qualify for the position but used to give answers to almost all questions thrown to the audience and collect lots of chocolate if the throw was a good one.I think NERICID(Debate) started from the 3rd year ,and Ladykeane shillong took the glory(Suparna Laha?) and Anirbanda ofcourse one of the best quizzard I have seen. I too remember the Extempore speech competition ,I was one of the judges and Jimut stole the show with his topic "Potato". Sitting on the judges table I was trying to control the laughter. I remember doing the speeches of welcome and introduction ,so things were tough and fun for me. But I think most of the work of organising were done by people who worked behind the curtains like the co-ordinater debate, quiz, food, decoration, the PRO etc. I don't know when I can again enjoy nericiq again but on the days of the event I am certainly bound to be nostalgic with all my memories. GOOD LUCK |

Here is the list of winners along with the quizmasters. I did not follow the NERICIQ edition of '98 , '99 & '00 that closely. So can not name the quizmasters but know the winners.
1990 --> 1st was REC Silchar. 2nd was GC College Silchar. QM was Ravi Patwa.
1991 --> 1st was REC Silchar. 2nd was NERIST, Nirjuli QM was Joy Bhattacharya
1992 --> 1st was Cotton College Guwahati. 2nd was St Edmund's Shillong. QM's were Rathindra Basu and Somyadeep Choudhury.
1993 --> Ist was JU Calcutta, 2nd was St Edmund's Shillong. QM's were Rathindra Basu and Sudipto Mazumdar.
1994 --> 1st was Motijheel College Dum Dum. 2nd was REC Silchar. QM's were Joy Mazumder, Ravi Patwa, Somyadeep Choudhury. (there might have been one or two person more from JYOTI along with Joyda and Ravida who conducted the prelims since Somyadeeps flight got cancelled. Please check it out with JYOTI)
1995 --> 1st was REC Silchar. 2nd was NEHU Shillong. QM's were Somyadeep Choudhury and Vinayak Das.
1996 --> 1st was NEHU Shillong. 2nd was REC Silchar. QM's were Rathindra Basu and Ranjit Thomas.

Eitto !! Rajib Saha with his photographic memory has landed !!! But Raka di-s comments have put one thing in doubt...if 1990 saw Joy Bhatt, whatever happened in 1991 ? Did he come again ? I fully agree with Rajib's details from 1992 onwards as we were all a part of Nericiq by then...but obviously, we have a thing or two to sort out in the years 1998 - 1991. Rajib re maante laagbo...Ranjit Thomas reo mono rakhi disos...I am reminded of him only after your posting...that was the guy from IIMC who'd won the HCL Beanstalk quiz..nani?? And yes , 1997 did see Rathin along with Soumyadeep. And probably, Nilanjan-da ( Aditya ) also did a few prelims along with Ravi-da in 1994 before Soumyadeep turned up on the last day for the semis, clad in a Payjama-Punjabi to boot !!!How's that for memory ? And regarding that 1995 Aloo incident...well, I guess that'll be a personal highpoint for me for several reasons...infact nobody remembers the 1994 extempore competition...that night in 1995 also saw another very very sensational incident which I rather not narrate here ;D Suffice to say that I, Alok Lall and around 10 Jyoti members spent the whole night wide awake in the verandas of the Police Guest house for some reason...let's just say Pachunga University, St. Anthony's and REC Silchar were involved in a mini off-stage controversy ;D ;D I still remember how difficult Rajib ( fresh from a good night's sleep) found to keep the two of us awake and interested in the semis next morning...I guess the Raymonds fiasco happened in that round...ironically, I saw one of those hoardings a few weeks back in Kolkata and was instantly reminded of all the stories associated.
I think everybody who's been a part of Nericiq/d will echo Tuli-di-s sentiments about the great collective effort everybody at Jyoti used to put in...I mean it was really marvellous to see how each and every guy ( can't even dare to attempt to name them, as I am sure I'll miss out a lot of deserving names )put heaven and earth together for the full 3 days just to ensure everybody had a good time - be it at the Audi or at the Guest House and the Circuit House...and the food used to be soo good...especially on the final night...and the Jyoti members used to smilingly bear with all the tantrums thrown by some of the less accomodating teams ( I remember people demanding forks and spoons for a typical Bengali menu >:( ) I've observed that those team rarely did well in any of the competitions, but kudos to Jyoti, the always used to make everyone feel so special and cared for !!! I mean these were the same guys who probably would never help out their own mom's at housework but during those 3 days and in the preparatory few weeks prior to the event, they were willing to do anything...I doubt whether Silchar has seen / will see such selfless collective effort again with the single objective of bringing a lot of people together and giving them good , clean, wholesome entertainment... Thank you all for bringing back Nericiq again...slightly upset about the dates though...but atleast I probably can still make it...my heart goes out to all those who cannot...you'll all be missed I'm sure...but I know with certainty that all of you will be tuned in somehow...the new website is a terrific effort...I hope that acts as the channel between Nericiq 2002 and all those who are going to be mentally at District Library Auditorium on the D-day !! Let's hope for the best !!!!! |

Jimut after reading your post visited the nericiq site to see how Rajib looks now ... he got rid of the moustache :) and looks healthier... Nice to hear that you can make it to the quiz this year ... quiz and puja .. lucky maan ... !!!
Speaking of Nericiq ... I could participate just twice and I still remem we three myself, you and Rajib ... cycling our way to district library .. our lives revolved around nericiq those couple of months of the year !!! And what an achievement it was the first time when we could make the finals !!! ( though we fared very badly in the final ). And then to to "unavoidable circumstance(s) " we decided to participate in different teams in the next and the last nericiq I could participate !! And well after around 20-30 quizzes which I and you had participated ( winning almost 70% of them .... remem Eagle club :) ) I was not that enthusiastic when participating with Supratik(da)and Debarati(di) ... and even after winning the runners-up trophy I still thought something was missing !!! [remem the planchette which correctly predicted this .. atleast my half ... but again it had predicted your rank in HSLC] ( by the way I dont see GC College as the runners up in 1994 in the list at the nericiq site ??? Instead REC is mentioned :P. ) ... Nericiq is one of the few good things that silchar can be really proud of them and its really great that its being revived !! Lot of hard work goes into organising such an event and we are proud of Jyoti !! Anirban -da (nice to know he made into IIML) is probably the best quizzer Silchar can ever have ... I remem Srinjam Rajsekhars team when asked about their experience during the prize distribution said "We came We Saw and We were Conquered !!!!! " ... that summed it all . |

Well the answer is: Holden Caulfield is the protagonist of the novel 'Catcher in the Rye' by J D Salinger. This book has been steeped in controversy since it was banned in America after it's first publication. John Lennon's assassin, Mark Chapman, asked the former Beatle to sign a copy of the book earlier in the morning of the day that he murdered Lennon. Police found the book in his possession upon apprehending the psychologically disturbed Chapman. However, the book itself contains nothing that could be attributed with leading Chapman to act as he did - it could have been any book that he was reading the day he decided to kill John Lennon - and as a result of the fact that it was The Catcher in the Rye, a book describing a nervous breakdown, media speculated widely about the possible connection. This gave the book even more notoriety :) :) :)
Hi folks answer this:

The first year??

There seem to be some inaccuracy in the history that's been published till now (unless my memory has failed me completely).
The first NERICID was in 1990 (I was still in ragging period!) and my partner was Biraj-da.....the first prize came to me in the individual category and our team was 2nd (or 3rd). It was at District Library and the Quizmaster for NERICIQ that year was Joy Bhattacharjee. And of course, I remember you, Debjani!!
So, since NERICID one year younger to NERICIQ, the first NERICIQ must have happened in 1989 with Ravi as QM.
Cant help mentioning how I came to be a part of the legendary Anirban-da's team. His 3rd partner hadn't arrived and the prelims were about to start. I had come for the NERICID and was the ONLY REC guy at the venue... he just walked up to me and asked, "what are you doing? Can you sit in?" I gave some flukey answers (clotting of blood, dolphin, hemingway, hartal, roghan josh or whatever!!) and was given the privilege of being his and Nilu's permanent partner!!
Good luck guys for this year!! Wish was there!! |

Hi All,
Visiting this site after a long time. Actually lost interest in this site due to lack interesting topics being posted. Its nice to see such an wonderful chain being initiated. Truely NERICIQ/CID happened to be most entertaining and thrilling experience; electric ambience ; supportive crowd ,thunderous applause and last but not the least such witty/on-the-track answers/remarks coming from the participants/back seaters. Remember a participant(one dark guy GCC) refering to that strechable latex device left the QM blushing. I too was a regular Quizzer in my school days;also participated in Nericiq couple of times, couldn't go beyond Quartar finals. But the very thought of NERICIQ makes me feel proud about the fact that even in those Silcharians showed such massive support and enthusiasm considering those were not KBC days. keep pouring

Hi ! For people like me who have benn out of Silchar for years , the memories of NERICIQ/NERICID are indeed very dear. I was present in the inaugural meeting of JYOTI when its name , motto etc. were decided. But sorry guys, I will not be able to provide any material on its history as required by you as the cliche goes - i have a very bad long term memory. Its quite embarassing considering the fact that some of you have such photographic memories of the event held over the years. It is wonderful that the event is being revived and the QM is Rajib Saha whom i remember as a lanky guy from link rd. He, jimut and premashish were a formidable team. All the best to you! Indeed you are so lucky to make it to the event and that too as the QM. Jimut, how and where are you. I am based in Mumbai at present . With a high pressure job and a monkey of a kid to handle at home, i get to go to sil very rarely. I really miss all that excitement those three days used to create. Anirban Paul was by far the best quizzer i have ever seen , but he had a problem accepting defeat . I also remember his very able teammates nilanjan(who had an enviable collection of western classical music) and priyaranjan (who had written a funny article in juvenilia on his first impressions of silchar )Why hasn't anybody mentioned karabi-di who used to be such an integral part of the organising team. For all of you who will have the priviledge of attending this years' NERICIQ/CID, do keep the likes of us posted of evry detail. ALL THE VERY BEST TO THE ORGANISERS. debarati |

Hi! Heard from Jhimut that Silchar hosted NERICIQ recently with Rajiv as the Quizmaster. I guess it was bound to happen after going thro' the posts at Silchar.com on NERICIQ. I expected lot of reactions after the event was over, but ironically there seems to be a lull on this. Hey guys tell us how did the events go? What all happened et al? Jhimut was telling me that the finals started very late (so the crowd wasn't much by the time it was over) and there was a good tongue lashing match between the leaders of the opposition and treasury at the debate's final (real life rivalry for public consumption on display, was it? These politicians never change ::)). And SMC winning the NERICIQ for the first time (seems it has come a long way in quizzing)! Hey guys post msgs and let us know what all we missed at NERICIQ this year! |

hi priya thankx to sil.com.where r u these days?i was goin thru ur mail, and recalling those hectic days of nericiq n d.not only the organiser but all ur well wisher remembers u when some debate comp.is organised.i still remember u the way u wrote about sil.in a helarious manner'my honeymoon to silchar'. best wishes rumi(i believe u still remember me)
There seem to be some inaccuracy in the history that's been published till now (unless my memory has failed me completely).
|

Its really disgusting to see that this platform is being increasingly used by some bugger to settle their personal score. If any body goes to a dance bar thats none of anybody's bloody business.
Such attitude doesn't serve the purpose of this site. |

Teenagers confession about Miss Black Rose.
I used to be very naughty kid, a spoiled one. I was numero-uno in both deeds and misdeeds . Hardly a day passed by when I would not be entertained by the sticks rather than the carrots. There were teachers, who vehemently, projected themselves to be the ‘clean-indian-woman’. Always in saris and binds, they used to boast around about Indian culture and Indianness. And these were the same ones about whom we would, out of blue, one sudden day hear to have got married to the teacher who too stayed in the same school hostel accommodation provided by the school authority.
And I guess we were just too little young ones in class IX and X, to have understood about the ‘source’ of this companionship. A school too far away from the main town on the outskirts, located 500-600 meters away from the main road (national highway), surrounded by paddy fields on all then four sides, too many shady trees all around . The compound, mostly inaccessible and invisible after dark. All these ingedrients provided the ideal blend for a perfect romance to build up. And who the hell needs a bed and a room to fulfill the sexual gratification, if one has the plush green grass carpet and the open sky. And a bonus in the form of cool breeze all around because miles and miles on either side of the compound had only paddy fields and not even a single soul to bother you in your expedition to explore the lusty avenues!
And here was a lady from Punjab, married to some engineer and settled here in my town. She was dark, slim, had a well tuned waist, long legs, well groomed long hair, perfect beauty parlour toned eyebrows, thick eye lashes, and above all the dazzling ,starry, misty, almond shaped wide and broad eyes . The lips she had would give all those Madonna’s, Lopez(s),Mariah Carays, Sonali bendres, Madhu Sapres…………..run for their money and could even give a guy high of his life time ! She had one thing in her which no other lady teacher in our school had , and it was her I-don’t-give-a-d**n-to-you attitude in the looks , in her words,in her actions and above all in her dress.
And coming to talk of dresses , I will never forget the record breaking initial 14 days of her in our school, when she came to the school full of sari clad teachers , in breathe taking body hugging dresses, exposing her well tuned figure to the envy of the rest of the lady teachers. Till the time she had happened to us, we were bored of seeing sari-clad ‘mams’ ( whom we were supposed to address as DIDI according to the school rules. And till date I haven’t been able to understand the rational behind this.) an occasional exposure of the midriff, an accidental fall of the Sari pallu in the sudden breeze that used to be so rampant because of the open space all around and the consequential throbbing out of the cleavage were the LITTLE THINGS that we used to get to see and remain contended. And here was Miss Black Rose ( I had nick named her ). Sexy , suave, sleek, poised, affluent, seductive, knowledgeable, intelligent, very human, and above all not a hypocrite. She knew since she was dark complexed, she was suppose to wear those kind of dresses to get noticed. And I guess there was no wrong in it . and why should there be any wrong in it ? she had the perfect figure – the one which might give Tom cruise to rethink about Nicole Kidman. Honestly speaking I used to adore her . Not because she was beautiful and sexy, but because she was very different from the rest. One could very well figure her out in a crowd of females. Always better than the rest. She was the only one in my life time (still) who used to pronounce my name exactly the way it should be. Punishment to me was like a routine or rather sine-qua-non sort of thing. Come to think of it. The day I wouldn’t get punished, I would fell vey much suffocated as if I ‘m missing something most essential to survive. Something like air.
She never punished me . Never. She used to teach us chemistry and botany. Chemistry was fine with me. But the latter somehow didn’t give me enough of the impetus to care more for the subject. Miss Black Rose, used to give me a very fishy smile, call me by my name and then in her polite enriched continental English accent say “ I know you are naughty. You get a lot of the canning and fumes from the rest of the teachers . I think you already get so much from the rest that I don’t find any reason to give you more. But I know you are intelligent as well. And I know if your work hard you can be there –at the TOP. Even though I was a naughty, spoiled one at my school, but I was equally good in my studies. And I know, one day you will make it to there at the top. Next time study hard and answer my questions. Ok ? No need to get so scared , so tensed or hypered. So what if you weren’t able to answer this time. There is always a next time u know.” These words still remain my most memorable ones. Not because it was spoken by Miss Black Rose in continental accent. Not because the words were so soothing. Not because she didn’t beat me up. But only because she was the one who knew how to be kind and human.
This little gesture of her was enough motivation for me. So I decided I would take up tuitions with her at her house. Unlike rest of the indian-culture-rich sari-clad lady teachers ( who were so mad after money that they hardly had enough time to teach their own children, because they were too tied down with coaching classes in their make shift coaching centers at the home ) , Miss Black Rose wasn’t greedy at all. When I approached her for the tuition’s she initially was hesitant. and she was very honest to give the reason of her denial to take up tuitions at home. She replied with honesty that I want some time for me and my family.
But seeing my enthusiasm and zeal , she agreed. And it was only when I reached her residence, did I realise why she had been refusing the tuition’s. Coz she knew how to life a live completely. Coz she knew how to enjoy the small things in life . Coz she knew how to live each moment of life to the fullest. Coz she knew she had an adorable husband back home and she wanted to spend time with him and in the way she wanted.
With the knock on the door, came out Miss Black Rose. In a transparent knee-length sleeveless nighty ! She had an amazing sense of colours .and variant moods . It was a light sky blue nighty with the perfectly done embroidery in it. She had wore a dark , perhaps black , panty and no bras at all ! Her hairs were wet. Her henna colored hairs were so soft. And no , I didn’t touch it. One can guess it if he only knows how to ! With the long spread out hairs stretching out to the naval at the front, and the wetty ones at that, she was looking more gorgeous than ever before. Without those customary lipsticks, her lips were now looking more juicy , seductive, sexy and appealing than with lipsticks. If there was any trace of make up, well she just had a bindi and the lines drawn with a eye liner on her eye lashes . That picture of her on that drizzling Saturday evening, still remains my one of the sexiest woman that I have ever encountered in my life so far.
She opened the door.Greeted all of us four guys. Asked us to come in and have our sit. I think We were at the wrong place at the wrong time. This was what I had thought the moment I entered the room and could smell a very puffy smell . Till the time I saw the two glasses of whisky on the floor beside the mattress. It had two pillows on it. And the bedsheet looked too clumsy just as it looks when we wake up early in the morning from the bed . More shockingly, I noticed a pack of condoms and two used ones with the fluid scattered all around those. She excused herself ,picked both the glasses of half left over whisky, mattress , the pack if unused condoms and went inside .When she come out after few minutes , she was in her usual body hugging salwar.
Well in those days , I guess I was too young to undertsand what is called personal life. Now looking back at this incident, I feel so much to like Miss. Black Rose ,so much to respect her, so much to learn from her how to be my-self, so much to know from her …….about nothing else--- But how she managed to be so cool during the whole ordeal. In normal circumstances, any female would have preferred to do just the reverse of what she did. Yet , here she was . The one who has no qualms , no brooding, no hypocrisies instituted in her veins. Jus plain freedom of being myself. Just living her life in her own terms . It was her house . It was her husband with whom she was having sex. It was their money with which they had bought the whisky. It was their knowledge how to have safe sex using the condoms. It was their good time they were rejoicing, without bothering anyone and without breaking any of the rules of the god d**n SOCIETY ! And doing so , why the hell should they fell ashamed and of whom ?
I have never seen any female wearing so high heel shoes like she did ( I was told it is called pencil heel ) I didnt see any bold teacher like her who refused to wear sari and come to school only because the culture police of the school didn’t like it or approve it. Or simply because the school authorities didn’t like her as an odd –man-out in the horde of sari clad female teachers. I didn’t see in my twelve years of schooling in that school, a teacher who refused to fold hands for the prayer, ‘coz, I believe she had her own way to be close to god. Moreover none of the spiritual or the mythological epics makes it compulsory to fold hands to show respect to god. What it needs is the sincerity with which one prays . And she had that sincerity in abundance. Its only that the authorities quite didn’t like someone breaking and defying their conventional rules. I had many a times found her closing her eyes during prayers , but folding her hands …..never. She was the only teacher whom I saw spending her idle time in the library reading books after books ,whereas the rest of the indian-culture-rich sari clad bunch preferred idle gossiping ( some even brought their knitting gears and the accessories , and were very often found busy idle gossiping and sewing the sweater for their hubby and kids )
Looking retrospectively, I often wonder , how she managed to gather the courage to be different .
As G . B . Shaw had put . HE WHO CAN; does HE WHO CANNOT; preaches !

She had one thing in her which no other lady teacher in our school had , and it was her I-don’t-give-a-damn-to-you attitude in the looks , in her words,in her actions and above all in her dress.
It was their good time they were rejoicing, without bothering anyone and without breaking any of the rules of the god damn SOCIETY !
