Halflong

Those blind curved and tipsy-topsy roads, left side hills, right side kills. Me, small child in St. Agenes, the most beautiful, picturesque school I’ve ever attended.                            The big playground, bended wooden benches, sorrounded by trees, trees and more trees (2_small_kid_2_rembr_th_names), spawns, tadpoles bangachees grew up in the moistened and wet corners of the field, Saurabh (don’t know where he is now) told me they like biscuiter gura…I used to feed them.

Only a single city bus and a line bus run in the town.

The Don Bosco School, huge field, meant 4 big boys only.

Durga bisorjon in the lake, with nature built green gallery.

Mute roads, cute government residences, again more trees, flowers, pahari kachakola gach, kathgolap, sugarcane trees, oleander, here, there, everywhere. Dil garden garden ho jata tha.

The rail station, n number of stairs, freshest oranges on beter jhuri, numerous forceful  waterfalls coming out of the hills, bus yuhun hi … Lonesome lower halflong station,  ever mysterious jhatinga.

Hailakandi

First memory is an audible one. Rickshaws and their berry berry special air horn. Sweet sound. Pom Pom. Will never find anywhere else.

Huuuuge Govt School, more than one hundred years old, perhaps established in 1897. Medieval english structure, sprawling verandah, mammoth classrooms with free echo system. Its believed that if u make a seven chakkar of this school, u complete a kilometer.  There are some pukurs for  swimming, playfield (no big trees though),

the sweetened ice-creams. (content? Color, water aar chini, nothing else ;D, though parents allege the water is directly extracted form gutters ;D)

Some children use distinct and different flavours of Atars. U greet somebody, assalamalaaikum salam, and get a smily response.
Fresh fish and famous hailakandir kachu, even amul butter lost in straight sets.

The most religious place in my life are Kalibari aar Ramkrishna Mission. India te onek RKMission e gesi, spacious, large, extensive and big libraries, birat seba kendra, but here eto shanto, apon bhav, homely feelings, tiner chal, lal cement er mejhey, emni gojaia utha jobaful gach, amar khub mon e hoy. I used to accompany my jethimony for Ramayan and Mahabharata path.

If u r tired in Hailakandi, go 4 a ride towards basic training school with a bicycle.
Cool breeze,  dhankhet,  supari gach  will bow u ,   rural at its best. Alpo dur ei sorospur cha bagan.

Don’t know why people want to go urban way.        This township is no exception.

Karimganj
I,ve not seen a place with as pany ponds. They are called sagar (example, shambhu sagar) and u’ll find choto, boro, mejo sagors not only in main roads but also in bi-lanes.  Each one carries a distinct character. Each one has mood swings. Their feelings vary from a stormy nights ( Uchhash), to a windy day (boishakh mash, baroia-teroia, badhon chara anondo) to cloudy afternoons (bishonnota) to dry winters ( udas boiragi bhab, hari din to gelo, sondha holo paar koro aamare  ;D)

Their partners (pukur er bondhubandhob, wht d u think ::)) are the alongside trees, boroi gaach, aamra gach, bang party (frogs), inclined basher bera, taal gach, mini boin aar vola bhai (bilaai aar neri-kukur, kuchu muchu combo, u cant imagine a scene without them), lau mancha aar pukur pare bason majar lagia rakha chai. They all participate in the party from time to time. (Now pls don’t call me a mad)

And then there are some amazing shadowy, silent roads in the afternoon (during grisser bondho), some kachha, some pacca.

The medium sized dock at Kushiara.. Is this is an international border ? my GOD. People put their dresses in the poly pack, get almost naked (only chaddi remains ;D) swims the river, binds the pack in the waist, put up the dress again, lighten a molla naseeruddin biri and disappears

Sontor bazar, fresh rui, koi, tangra, chingri (golda+kucho) eeeeeeeeelish aar chitol mach. Aar misti Khoi. Out of this world experience, u’ll find no where else.

SILCHAR

Lets take a deviant look at our own silchar

Did u  minutely see the trees in jail road? Then, around Normal School, hundred years old teak (segun) trees. Ever walked thru DC Bunglow Road after a heavy rainfall, those huge and stand-tall Cypress and Eucalyptus, chilling winds and falling leaves, some miseed u, some kissed u on ur forehead…brojor dokaner adda on district library fence.

Ever crossed Kumbhirgram airport, seen the sun set from the garden hills, feel the softest grass on ur feet, bare foot run on it, nostrile raw flavours of the tea leaves.

University Road. Ever experienced the aura after puja vacation, whispering canes, cyberian birds and mellow sun in the lake, nauka aar manjhi in silhoutte, queer shaped rainbow clouds.

How do u describe a heaven?

Yes, Haflong is no doubt beautiful. And I still remember my first trip to Karimganj. I had been told that international border can be seen from there and I remember how I insisted on coming that by a rickshaw just to see the Border. As far as Silchar is concerned, I don't think that it is beautiful-it is muddy in Summer and dusty in Winter. But yes, the scenery on the way to university is beautiful. The road may have added to the beauty if it was good but its condition was such that one was always concerned about falling off the road to really appreciate the scenery

I am really surprised to get the feedback from all around...this is really great....and unexpected.....getting responses in my yahoo box...this is fascinating.. some NRI had written that he wants to visit our place ( the post has been deleted due to some technical fault)....that is something i believe is super super achivement for me....Sir, I will address a letter about the pros and cons of the area....dont be blinfolded.

Well, wht i thought, Since Silchar dot com has been getting really big and now from all around the places (national as well as international) all sylheti people are having a look at it...

Since it is too focussed only on silchar, i thought should write something about those places where sylehti people are really ruling. thanks to my father's transfers i got to see all the places with my eyes....and with my own way also ;D

am in a hurry so now i believe friends from other places also got something where they can identify better.....aar kita....nijer jaaigar taste oi alada....nani....
i think this is a great platform...and we should really come up with addas which are meanigful and can contribute in a bigger way in aar life....so more than a comfort provider we want to see thsi website as a better  and a bigger change............

Indeed man, one more beautiful place from NE is Shillong which can be easily compared with hill stations of Europe. Try visting Ooty/Manali/Mussourie..etc and other hill station of India and then visit Shillong, u will kow the difference, in terms of infrastructure/climate/nature..etc... Only thing one should take care of is hanging around after dark which is still a problem.
This places are not yet exploited and explored by many tourists in India due to different political/geographical/cultural..etc reasons.
One sud really sit down and think how to bring this places to limelight.

NE well wisher.

"Any body there to add up some " golden moments" in Shillong, another place heavily inhabited by Sylheti's [ this is also the place from where a heavy exudus of young sylhetis is detected]"

Hi Everyone !!!

Just thought to put forward some memories of my childhood spent in Shillong:
Well,we used to stay in Laithumukhrah (Pronounced as Laimukrah) for about 4 years and it was there that i was born in 77' and spent my childhood....my very early memories remindes me of accompanying my father to every nook and corner of Shillong in holidays.....
1) Wards Lake:- This was one place which i liked most for the raw scenic beauty that it provided....earlier it was much much more beautiful than what it is now....every Sunday,me along with my Baba and Ma used to go there and enjoy boating...i used to sit on the edge of the boat and at the slightest of chance was extremely eager to touch the cold waters...and everytime i did that my Ma's face was frowned with fright...she used to pull me back to sit beside her and i used to cajole with her to sit with my Baba as my Baba permitted a minimum level of liberty to explore my notorious mind !!!
While coming back from Wards Lake,we always went to the Laithumukrah church...it was so serene

2)Happy Valley:- One of my Mama had an Ipaz motorcycle and he used to take me to Happy Valley....i used to sit on the front, just behind the fuel tank and used to feel the wind against my face...we used to twist and turn through Nongthummai and finally scaled Happy Valley from where Shillong always looks at it's best...in the evening it looked glorious;simply fabulous...at Happy valley, the most remarkable thing was the wind,in the months of May/June also, the wind blowed and that was so soothing....we felt so rejuvenated spending time at Happy Valley

3) Police Bazaar:- The main centre of activity in Shillong;it used to bustle with people till 10' in the night in those days...there was no fear in anybody's mind...we used to come down through that small Don-Bosco lane to polo hills at times even after 10 pm.

4)Kajal Da's Mistanna Bhandar:- In Laithumukrah,Kajal da used to have a sweet shop where one can find the best Rosogollas in the world...that's what i thought...was very fond of that sweet. One day while going to one of our relative's place for lunch,my Baba purchased 20 Rosogollas and to my utter astonishment gave all of them to our relative!!! I remember fighting with my Baba all the way that why have you gave all the Rosogollas to them, what about me?My Baba felt so humiliated that he took me to Kajal da's shop and asked Kajal da to give me as many Rosogollas as i wanted....i tried my level best but could manage only 2... was all of 4 years then but after that never ever did such misdeeds.

4)Polo Hills:- When you enter polo hills, just at the entrance was two stone statues of an Elephant and a Horse, and i was simply fascinated with the Horse...!!! still don't know why but was mad about that Horse....also remember playing with a no.4 size football in the polo stadium...there was no covered stadium there in those times;but the ground was very big or it seemed so for a 4 year old toddler chasing a football...just used to keep running behind the ball as it used to hurt when kicked!!!Whenever went to Matri Mandir, while coming back through that wooden bridge, used to go inside polo stadium just to have a feel of the aura of being inside the stadium and playing football.

5)Pine Trees behind where we lived:- This is one place which i 'll never forget...don't remember the name exactly nor tried to find out at those times...there was a long queue of Pine trees just behind where we used to stay...of course they are no more now...victims of so called modernization...Those Pine trees were standing in a straight line and were a brilliant example of how trees can be so useful to mankind...those trees were situated in a point which we call a ridge and prevented soil erosion everytime there were rains...they resembled me to be a group of warriors guarding their frontier at all time and with outmost vigil...somehow i felt attracted to that place. It was very calm and peaceful there...sound only of chirping birds and the sound of wind moving against those pine trees...used to feel the wind...seemed as if something had touched me...didn't thought on those lines at that time but afterwards while growing up in the very beautiful Arunachal Pradesh, used to bask on those thoughts...thoughts embedded deep within...i visited that very place even after we left Shillong, whenever i came to Shillong from Arunachal Pradesh, visited that place till i was in class 9 or 10,and then when i visited Shillong next, those trees were no more...

6)Shillong during 80-81:- My next memories of Shillong are of fright, anger, distrust and filled with human misery created by the most social of all living beings-Humans...there was this wave against people from outside in general and Bengalis in particular...didn't have too many memories but remembered not being able to venture out for days as cerfew was imposed...my sister was born during those turbulant days and we went to Nazareth hospital taking a route which was never ending...everybody avoided going through Wards Lake...i felt so betrayed but was later told that someone was stabbed there.
Ultimately Baba got transfered to Arunachal Pradesh and with fresh memories of cerfew, lathicharge, riots, thefts and murders left Shillong in 81 but it was not the same Shillong anymore,Shillong as i saw it.

Still, spent the most beautiful days there,Khublei Shillong.

Beautifully narated indeed with lots of human touch. Very true that every place has its pros and cons, pros - senic beauty, cons - gondogol sob somoi. But I wud still suggest everyone as a whole and silcharites in specific(for the mere fact as there are lots of syleties still living there) to give shillong a visit. Because as the things stands now, we don know this place will still be the same(from political point of view) for the tourists specially the bengalies.

Local fishes from the paddy fields
«on: 08/16/03 at 15:07:27 »

Shanu,
You are right in giving a proper description, respect and recognition about the taste of karimganj's Chitol mach...ya,they simply are delicious... :P...had the chance to taste them once while on a hurricane stopover in Karimganj...

But,i would like to put forward a unique way of rearing fishes in Arunachal Pradesh...we were at a place called Ziro...Ziro is  famous for its bitter cold,Apple Orchards,Plum trees and the snow covered roads in the winters.

The local tribe of Ziro are called Apatanis...they worship Donyi-Polo,where Donyi means the Sun and Polo the Moon.

The Apatanis are extremely hard working specially the womenfolk...they sow paddy during April/May in their fields and irrigate them so as to be knee-deep in water...once the paddy saplings are transplanted and grow taller, the Apatanis release small fishes(young ones)in the fields and both the paddy plants as well as the fishes grow simultaneously in the fields...it is all the very surprising because since Arunachal Pradesh is regarded as an backward state, the farmers are neither trained nor accustomed to the modern day methods of farming but they are practising this form of agriculture combined with pisciculture for centuries altogther...the fishes grow to become medium sized and are known as the local fishes there. It is delicious but would be unfair to compare them with the Chitol Mach of Karimganj but if anybody have tasted them, surely would have relished the taste of those fishes.

Shanu, ekbar chance paile taste koria dekhis...khub bhala lagbo.

Of Tawang,Bomdila and other places in Arunachal
«on: 08/18/03 at 16:32:02 »

Ya,Ziro is an extremely beautiful place to visit...once Indira Gandhi visited Ziro and was so captivated by the natural beauty of Ziro that she gave it the name of "Scotland of the East".

Apart from Ziro, there are so many places in Arunachal Pradesh where if one visits will find coming back very tough.

There is Tawang...snow covered at an altitude of more than 9000 feet above sea level...it was in Tawang that the Hindi movie "Koyla" was shot and the landscapes were so vibrant in the movie.Tawang also boosts of one of the most beautiful monastaries in the world-"The Tawang Monastary"

There is Bomdila...the Chinese occupied it in the 62 war and the residents had to flee the place. It was also the place where more than 3000 indian soldiers lost their life in the battle against the Chinese...It later prompted Lata Mangeshkar to sing the song..."Ae mere watan ke logo".

If one goes to Tawang from Bomdila in the summer season, one can see the innumerable lakes on the way...they are beautiful on their own terms and can't be compared with anything else.

There is Pashighat...the oldest city of Arunachal Pradesh...it is on the banks of river Siang(Tsangpo in China and later the mighty Brahmaputra). One unique thing about the river Siang in Pashighat is that it flows above the land level for a few kilometers near Pashighat but due to the surface tension of water, the water flows in the river only.

There is Tezu, the District Headquarters of Lohit District...Tezu boosts of a number of rivers that one has to cross to reach there. In the summer season,it takes around one and a half hours by boat to cross these rivers but in the winter season, the Army prepares an unique baloon bridge on the three rivers(Kamlang,Central Lohit and Digaru) which share a common bed.Of them the Digaru is the most umpredictable one and has the reputation of changing its course many times.

There is Itanagar, the Capital of Arunachal Pradesh...the name Itanagar is derived from Ita meaning bricks and Nagar meaning place...still in Itanagar, one finds brick forts from where the name has been derived.

Still, there are lots of other places in Arunachal Pradesh which i have not mentioned but no less in beauty from the above places like Daporijo,Senua,Khonsa,Anini(where the only way to reach is by Helicopters),Bordumsa,Namdpaha National Park and so on.

I take this opportunity to tell everyone that if you get a chance, then visit this beautiful place and you will love the place, the unique food, the unique culture there.

Now,coming to Shanu's message,Harappa and Mohenjodaro are not in Madhya Pradesh...they were in Punjab before independence and now they are in Punjab Province in Pakistan...they and a few other places where ancient civilization developed are scattered now in Punjab and Baluchistan Provinces of Pakistan...

But there are a lot of other places worth seeing in Madhya Pradesh and a few National Parks and Wild life Sanctuaries are also there...so hopefully will enjoy my stint there.

Thanks Shanu,i will also miss Delhi...spent almost 3 years now...so feeling sad while leaving but i believe that this world is a small place to live in and sometime somewhere we will meet again because i am not going to be placed perpetually at Bhopal, will definitely be relocated to Delhi sooner or later...and till then our Maha Adda is always there...

This Krishanu Bhattacharjee is a unique creative guy. The way he looks at nature is really amazing. Once I asked him how do you visualise so much, he says , "through my spect"
I've quoted one of krishanu Bhattacharjee's one article ( the places where he spent his childhood)

Halflong

Those blind curved and tipsy-topsy roads, left side hills, right side kills. Dear Debabrata,
Nice to read your post. Fully agree with you. In fact I have seen many people having this pain which we are discussing. That makes me think in a different direction and I am now dreaming to create more job oppurtunity at Silchar itself, so that enjoy the stay there and continue to do good job with outside world. What is your opinion? Since you have seen places and have diverse experience your opinion will be more practical. You post your reply to thread "Silchar Now & before" to maintain continuity. Please tell me more about Silchar and that region. You know what? I am rediscovering Silchar through silchar.com! Thanks  to Premasish.

where in Shillong did you live? And where did you move to in Arunachal?

We also followed a similar route except it was probably much later...I was in boarding school...

Wow!.........3 cheers to krishanu for starting this link. I just discovered it today. I'm from Haflong and miss it so much. Being born in Haflong and being raised up, all of my frens r there only. Those days at Don Bosco and Haflong Government College was wonderful. But my school life was the best.So many good and great teachers......Hillary Sir,Ruby Miss,Madame Louis,Sir Kurien, and all those whose names I can't remember right now.The aloo chop, sonpapri, jhal chana, boiled motor........kol kol etc were all amazing. Then teasing St.Agnes girls in the afternoon was a melody in itself. Stealing fruits from St.Agnes' back garden......etc etc etc........those picnics at diyung river................laopani,pork....everything is so fantastic about Haflong...............I just wish I'd be there right now!!!

Lumding - Halflong - Jhatinga. Still untouched by commercialization and everytime you visit you find something new. The railway hill section route is nature at its best. I still remember during my childhood trip to silchar from the following hill section. But if some incidents are associated with these places the memories are long lasting

I want to share one such incident with you people.

It was month of September in the year 2000 i was going back home to silchar from kolkata. The journey started from kolkata with as usual Indian Railways delayed train services. Neverthless reached Guwahati in the afternoon instead of early morning. Changed my mind and decided to have a train ride from Guwahati  to silchar. Took a passenger train from Guwahati to Dimapur and reached lumding around 11.30 pm in the night. The connecting train from lumding to silchar was very next day in the morning and that is perfect train ride if you want to enjoy the hill section. As it was raining heavily  outside decided to spend the night on the platform. I saw a vaccant bench little bit away from the station masters office. Just went nearer to it on the other side of the bench another person(male or female ?) was sleeping with a white bedsheet face covered. As it was already midnight without looking here and there i occupied the vaccant bench and took out one bedsheet from my airbag and lied down on the bench. As it was raining and cool breeze blewing across the platform i immediately felt asleep.

The very next day with the first ray of light i was up and enjoying the morning fresh air. Some of the people where curiously looking at me. I ordered a cup of tea from the passing tea vendor. I was about to finish my cup of tea four person with a stracher and a policeman came near to my bench and four of them picked up the person who was lying on the other side of my bench with white bedsheet face covered.

I jumped off the bench and asked the policeman what happened to the person. The policeman replied it's a dead body and it has to be taken to Badarpur station  in the morning train.

I still remember the incident whenever i  am passing by Lumding station.

I dreamt of traveling to Switzerland

My parents took me to Lahaul

After seeing snow all around, I forgot my dream

I dreamt of going to Paris

My teachers took me to Delhi

After seeing the flyovers, I forgot my dream

I dreamt of going to Australia

My friends took me to Andamans

After seeing the marine life, I forgot my dream

I dreamt of going to South Africa

My colleagues took me to Jim Corbett

After seeing the majestic lions, I forgot my dream

Now, I never dream of going abroad

Because, here in India, lies all the beauty

Do you ppl know the place where actaaly our civil servants receive training afte selection? Yaap u guessed it right.

its is Mussoorie, India’s most popular hill station. This beautiful place, situated at a height of 2000 km, was discovered by the British during their rule in India. There is so much greenery around that Mussoorie is rightly called the “Queen of Hills.” For reaching Mussoorie, going by a bus is the most advisable option. However, if you are coming by train, get down at Dehradun and take a bus from there. Mussoorie has hotels to suit every pocket. Start your exploration of Mussoorie by taking the ropeway to Gun Hill, the second highest peak of Mussoorie. Do not forget to look down while enjoying your ride on the ropeway. You will feel on top of the world!! The cold winds are sure to chill you once you reach Gun Hill. Do not forget to have a breath-taking view of the Himalayas from a telescope. Kempty Falls, the source of River Yamuna, is another major source of attraction in Mussoorie. The gushing sound of pure water will scintillate your ears even before you reach there. You can also enjoy a fun bath at the footsteps of Kempty Falls. If you love adventure, you must visit Dhanolti, 26 km from Mussoorie. You will find lots of snow here if you happen to visit this place during winter. Other places worth-seeing in and around Mussoorie are Municipal Lodge, Childer’s Lodge, Bhatta Fall, Jhariani Fall, Van Chetna Kendra, Sir George Everest House, Clouds End, and Sister Bazaar Road

Dear neeraj jain,

Thanks for sharing the poem with us. Your poem is very nice and I do agree with you that it is worth seeing India, instead of simply dreaming “phoren” countries. If possible, go abroad, it is also beautiful in its own way, but please don’t undermine Our Beautiful Mother India.

And no offence meant to you  or  the theme of your poem, kindly permit me to tell that Jim Corbett National Park is famous for the Tigers, Leopards and other animals.  But Lions are not available there.

---------------------------
“In India too, the Lions were spread across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.  Asiatic lions, a subspecies that split from African lions perhaps 100,000 years ago, are only found in the Gir wildlife Sanctaury of the Indian state of Gujarat.”

Once again, my information is not intended to spoil the spirit behind your lovely poem, only meant to share some information in the open forum. Hope I am not misunderstood,  in case I hurt you unintentionally, my sincere apology.
