can u slove the puzzle?

can u solve the puzzle??

This is a real story that happened between the customer of General Motors and its customer-care executive.   A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors: "This is the second time I have written to you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we've eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. if I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I'm serious about this question, no matter how silly sounds: "What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?" The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start. The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.  But why?     ---   Answer  in next letter.

As far as I know ...it had something to do with the time required by the gentleman in q to procure an inecream at the parlour....I mean vanilla is kind of a favourite with the majority and hence it took him a longer time at the queue to purchase the vanila variety than the other variety...
this time difference allowed a certain component of the car...dont remember exactly what...to cool down or something...unsure about the mechanical glitch...and this was at the root of the problem...ingenuity on the part of the engineer got him something from Alfred Sloan or not...well that I dont know ;D ;D ;D

I thought that some brain-teaser was coming up...turned up to be one of those stories they tell you in Management workshops to stress the need for ingenuity at every step of customer support.
Anyway, I don't think we'll ever have that sort of problem in Indian conditions...none of the cars work as a Pontiac plus our ambient temperatures are also vastly differnt. It's only when we resort to some of those complicated "imported" engines that some peculiar problems like this one surface.
So be Indian, buy Indian  ;D ;D
Or atleast , buy things adapted to Indian conditions  ;D

I don't know much about the inside engineering details of cars, but isn't vapour lock the same thing as "air lock" which happens so often on Indian roads and Indian vehicles due to the fuel lines heating up ? I remember getting stuck on the city buses(Canter):-) between REC and town due to air lock, pronounced as "ear-lock":-) by those city bus drivers, and they would just wait for it to cool down.

Himadri suddenly reminded me of many of those bus journey's that we must have undertaken...
Actually that problem is mostly a common case of overheating...anything 55 degrees above the ambient temp. is not desireable and with the super efficient radiators and cooling systems that most of our "canters" possess, such an eventuality is inevitable...the frequent pit-stops that you have refrred to are only for the cooling effect.Technically speaking, no "lock " is involved here.
The other "air lock " you may have heard about is mainly due to some fault in the air-intake system - faulty seals, o-rings, banjo washers, etc. or even due to a cracked pipe - you have to"bleed" the air out in such cases.
Often, when your fuel tank is almost empty and the vehicle is in motion, the suction end of the fuel intake system sucks in only air resulting in a "lock".
The problem discussed in this thread occurs mostly in cooler climes where the low temperature plays havoc with the fuel density causing the vapour lock...good antifreeze agents ( or in extreme cases, heating of the fuel tank )should take care of that.In this case the later you returned to your car, the more the chances of the fuel getting cold.
So much for the technical nitty-gritties !!! ;D

This is how a software engg solves mechanical probelms ...
he looks up it google ... exactly what i did  ;D

cut and pasted :

the man took less time to buy
vanilla than any other flavor.  Why?  The answer was in the layout of
the store.

Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at
the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were
kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took
considerably longer to find the flavor and get checked out.

Now the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start
when it took less time.  Once time became the problem -- not the
vanilla ice cream -- the engineer quickly came up with the answer:
vapor lock. It was happening every night, but the extra time taken to
get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to
start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the
vapor lock to dissipate.

Heres another one!

"Four jolly men sat down to play,
And played all night till break of day.
They played for cash and not for fun,
With a separate score for every one.
When it came time to square accounts,
they all had made quite fair amounts.
Now, not one has lost and all have gained -
Tell me now, this can you explain?"

Ill write the answer a bit later!
