Many a time we come across Silchari ladies speaking amongst themselves in "kelu" Those residing outside are prone to this disease.I call it a disease as becase in a bid to hide their originality, the ladies take up this easy way out .Outside Silchar, when you come across a girl who you know belongs to Cachar and she too knows of you belonging to the same place, yet prefers to converse in "kelu". Are the ladies afraid to speak in their mother tongue ? As for us boys, being far away from home makes little difference as to the verbal mode of communication we resort to.Everywhere I've been I've found Sylhetis and we had fun .Even now I'm surrounded by 2 Sylhetis though they belong to Shillong.Please , if anyone of you can, persuade the ladies not to try wearing "mayurer pekhom"

Its by tradition silchari girls try to talk in kelu ( though sometimes its half kelu and half sylheti ... like aami toke kuthay kuthay tukai ni ... ;D ) no matter where they are ...
And esp if they known there is atleast someone overhearing them ;)
Help us to know what the reasons behind this 8)

I think Silchari girls think if they speak in KELU to impress GUYS...I have seen a few girls changing from Sylethi to Kelu when a GUY walks by...
But I personally find it very entertaining...epsepically when theymis KELU with SYLETHI...
Have heard the daughter in law asking her mother in law in the presence of a stranger....
"Ma, Chhele Kothay?" and the Mother in law goes "Kotay ni?, te aagto mane koy.... ;D ;D ;D"

Few days ago in Kolkata I met a friend of mine and was overwhelmed not by the fact only that i met my friend but also for the fact that after a long time I will speak syllheti with her. but when i asked her kitare kirokhom asos? she immediately replied 'bhalo, tui kemon'. ha haha
the same happened not only with a girl but to a so called g.cian. named saurov. he started gossiping in kelu when i asked him tumi kelu kene matrai? he replied actually ekhane thakte thakte obhyesh hoye geche aar loke sunle hase. are beta tor matri bhasha matle kar bapor aai jai? shutorang silcharor pua ra baire gelei kelu mate though the girls prefer it even in Silchar also.

Think deeply !! and be honest .... u will have the answer.

But it is certain that Bengalis will never hesitate to speak in Bengali (U may prefer to call it 'Kelu') wherever in the world he goes.

The rich heritage of Bengali language & literature (Unfortunately the words when spoken will sound to u'r ears as 'Kelu') gives necessary confidence to its speakers.

Anyway, I think it is a individuals choice to speak in whatever language or dialect he/she desires. It is a sign of intolerance and narrow-mindedness to infringe that.

We all should feel the richness of Bengali language.Not only sylleti but everyone of bengali community should upgrades their spoken language to avoid the dilution of the actual meaning.Nodoubt every one should respect their own mother language ,but it also does'nt mean to deviate from the actual standard meaning.Instead of criticising any one we all should encourage every one to speak whatever in form they like but it should correct and bear the actual meaning.

Hi Folks!

Why on earth are we making such a fuss over wheather some one speaks in sylheti or kelu?!! Whats the big deal. Agreed you are concerned 'bout sylheti culture and values. But do you think your mother tongue is so vulnerable and week that it would get effected just because a handfull does not speak it in public. I am a sylheti and am proud of it but that doesn't mean i should go cribbing if i see some sylheti fellow not using his or her mother tongue. Rather we should appreciate people who can speak in language other than their mother tongue. Those who are staying away would understand it better. I am staying in delhi now and i speak in my mother tongue when am around with my folks wheather or not we are in a public place and no body relly bothers. But do you think i can survive here if i continue to speak only in my mother tongue and do not speak the local language or english. ??? Also some times we get used to speaking a certain language so much so that we continue to speak in that language even when we are with our own folks. And i don't see anything wrong in it. It certainly doesn't mean that "X" or "Y" is ashamed of speaking his or her mother tongue. And lets not target any particular segment for it. We all do it some time or the other.

But yes, no matter what language we speak, we should try to speak it in its correct form. There are situations when we make a mess of it. ( don't think any more example is required here :D :D) But we can alway correct our selves. Wot u say guys. ???

I'm also from silchar. I found that most of the girls are like to speak in kelu. There have so many reason. I'm not going to discuss about the reason. The real fact is that we the silcharities are prefering to make copy. Not only the silchar people, specially the bengali people likes to make copy so nicely. We can't balme to girls only, some boys also like to speak in kelu. We the modern people are prefering to speak in varities languages. If you're talking about the silcharies girls, Yah, it's true that they like to show themselves too much. Let me tell you one latest joke in favour of this topic. One day I visited one place in our locality, the ladies were from silchar, but she likes to speak in kelu. Wherever she can't speak in Kelu as like as Kolkata people. On that time I asked her so nicely, r'u from silchar or not? She replied I'm from dhamdam. I got bit wonder, Lastly she replied that she stayed in silchar for 15 years and her pronounce has fully changed. But the real fact is that her born and bord up from malugram.

debojit, i do not agree with your assessment at all. it is not only the girls but the guys as well who routinely do such stuff. i am surprised for i have been a zealous speaker of my bhasha and i am definitely offended if someone makes fun of this. however, one reason can be that sylhetis from this region have to move on to greener pastures in search of a career where sylheti is not a dominant language. had we had a reverse phenomenon, we would maybe have seen kelus learning sylheti !!!!!! how does that sound ? far - fetched ?

Hi,
I am not agree that all sylheti girls are following same. we here in dhaka if we meet any sylheti no matter boy or girl, we always practise our own language (sylheti) and we feel proud to talk like this way.
even if you visit to varsity or high official area you always find same. we never follow dhakaia or kelu among sylhites who living in dhaka or outside of sylhet.
yeah.....i come across some silchari puri, they try to present themselves smart as to using kelu...but they can't follow kelu like kolkata and eventually they got messed-up.

t/fore, my urge to all sylhites to keep our own language value
up.

Hi,
I have something to say here. I am taking my own example. I am from Shillong and I have been born and brought up there, both my baba and ma are from Sylhet and they speak that toungue. But none of my siblings nor me can speak it,we understand fully but are unable to speak. So its not that just to fell high and mighty we dont speak the language and there are many like us. And it has been told to us in our childhood that a child speaking sylhetti sounds vulgar. Although I totally disagree with this notion but still its the practise that many follow.I love the language and so does others. Its wrong in anyones part to create barriers becoz of the toungue we are speaking in.Catch you all later. :) :)

hi dear .....i also found lots of girls in silchar who are originally from silchar .every day she pass near by my shop and i find that she use to talk in sylheti i follow her so many time ,but one she talk with me ,she talk with me in kelu I was just socked when i hear kelu i just see her face and started laughing she just feel same on her and go way and never come to me again .my mother tounge is hindi but i love to talk in sylheti but i dont understand why sylheti girls try to become more smart by using kulu i ask one thing that without kelu they dont do anything by using their own mother tounge .if they do that than only they become more smart than any kelu girl . tumra amar khota bucho ni.

i don't really think that all shyleti girls prefer talking in kelu. i'm a shyleti girl too and we always love when we get some shyleti people to talk to here at b'lore. i think there is a section of people who prefer to talk in syleti and not necessarily all r girls, there r a few boys also who feel ashamed to reveal their identity as syleti. catagorising "girls who prefer to speak kelu" is absolutely wrong on ur part.
