If the NIT Silchar Student body is ready to take the task of maintaining the web site. Then I can fund the hosting of the web site in Us or in India as appropriate.

Hey Harbi, Netfirms.com has a package called Advantage which gives 500 MB of Disk Space 10 GB Monthly Data Transfer 100 E-mail Accounts MySQL Databases PHP scripting
It will cost around $120 for an year. I will be delighted to share the funding of this $120 with you. Apart from that, I can take up the design of the first few pages of the site. We can start of and let the students take interest and build it up in time.
nitsil.org would be the best choice. Forgot to mention, upon buying the Advantage package, we will get the domain name free.
Let me know asap if you think we can start off with that.

To buy a domain u need $10. Hosting per month can be done for around $5-$6 per month .... why do u guys want to spend $120 per year ???
If you guys want, I can create a subdomain called nit so you will get a website for http://nit.silchar.com . In addition if you want you can buy a domain nitsil, org and re-direct it to nit.silchar.com .

Hello, I think none of the students who are currently in REC are aware of this great intention of urs regarding the hosting of NITSIL.ORG I have contacts with some of our final year students. I think first we have to make them aware of this initiative. For any rexian who z in US, he can easily finance $5-$10 monthly for REC ,but basic thing is to coordinate with the students who are there in NIT,Silchar right now.
Thanks, jayanta@absiweb.com |

Hi Paul Babu, Harbi, final year NIT student..... I also would love to take an active part in the managing of the site. I believe it would be better if we have an independent site rather than creating a subdomain of silchar.com. Also, as I m presently unemployed, I wouldn't be in a position to share the financial share of the responsibility.Apart from that you can delegate jobs to me as and when required, and lots of guidance..... I shall be pestering you often. I am an ex-rexian , now in Delhi, doing my mba. Angshuman ang11@silchar.com |

Hi I went through the website, the design is okeys...considering the fact that it has been done by one of our current students, it is commendable. However, most of the times the server side pages do not work, there is no common theme or no common navigation bar running across the pages, the amount of information provided are not adequate, and at times atrocious, considering the fact that a visitor is unlikely to be interested in such information...and sometime even it conveys a wrong sense and a negative feeling about the institute... the primary task of a website is to convey information about an organization...information that can entice a visitor...only then the visitor is going to get interested and might be willing to take a keen look... I have met the HR people from several companies and learnt that when they have a clutter of similar ranked institutes to chose from, for recruitment, they often go through the respective websites...the current REC Silchar website will do nothing to get them attracted...
Similarly, for a prospective candidate or for a prospective lecturer, the website has to be enticing enough...enticing does not necessarily mean garnishment or aa mind blowing design...enticing in terms of the information content, the way they are presented and the inherent message about the institute and its culture that they convey.
The other issue is that of lack of alumni support for the institute. The college administration has not done ANYTHING to leverage its alumni base. Alumni are one of the strongest constituents of any organization...and the college cannot smply turn a blid eye to its alumni...the website would provide a good interface to help the college build a database of its alumni, their current locations and this in turn will have a decisive impact on the placements. The institute is 25 years old...I am sure there are people who are in good positions in several organizations, from where they can influence the recruitemnt decisions of the respective organizations they work for. The website needs to enable the alumni interface for the institute.
Again, having said all that, I really appreciate the efforts put in by the current site manager, however I would suggest you people think and discuss these issues...you might start a thread here asking for suggestions....I can already see some helping hands...from paulbabu and others...I am sure paulbabu can help you with some coding if you so desire...I will be in Silchar in end February 2004...you want to discuss more on this can email me at ricardian_rigmarole@yahoo.com or can catch hold of me when I am in Silchar. shine on Rupam.
