nice to know ur from umpling. myself umpling too, puja mandapor samnei bari. Did +2 for Edmunds and later B.E.i have couple of shillong basi here in US whom I know and also from Umpling for which I am in touch and get const updates.

haven't been to umpling to years. any upadates there. heard new community hall has comeup with libraby and entertainment hall.

Heard couple of names u mentioned. Definately late Bidhan Chak. Heard his son is doing good in Bengali Film industry. Used to be Salman Khan of Umpling for long. :-))

Well, till +2 we stayed in Laitmukrah. Actually after my parents shifted to Umpling, I also moved out. So haven't heard most of the big names u mentioned. And also I maybe lot junior to you. myself 93 passout +2.

That is true. You are approximately 15 years younger than me. In Edmunds, there are a few faculties you might recall. VR Rao, Radhendu Das, Ramendu Bhatt etc. They are my contemporaries to some extent.

Hi,

I don't belong to shillong i originally belong from Assam but i had been there . It's a really nice place and i would say it is one of the most famous hill station specially in the north east shillong is the best. The culture there is too modern as compare to other places and together with that the education system is also too good. i had some of my batchmates from shillong when we were doing engineering gradutation. From another point of view i love shillong b'coz the gals in shillong are very smart and as context to girls shillong is the best and girls out there can compare with any girls from any other place.

He is a great teacher. Ekhon Sukhendu Babu r chhatro Prof. Nitaipada Bhattacharyya [not sylheti, pucca ghoti] amar close collaborator and adviser.

yes, Sukhendubabu is a great teacher. I think he is the pioneer of radiation biology in India. I am lucky enough to attend the classes of both S. Bhattacharyya and N.P. Bhattacharyya. Right now I am at IUC Kolkata, working with Dr. M. Sudarshan. I hope you know him quite well. He got his PhD in 1991 in nuclear physics from NEHU.

Hello ....

Myself ... Aniruddha Bhattacharjee .... all-through St. Edmunds .... PU Sc 1993 .... then BE from REC silchar ... 1997 batch ... currently working for TCS.

We used to stay in Dhankheti ... and then subsequently in Motinagar AG Quarters ..... we left shillong in 1995 and have now settled in Calcutta.

I really miss Shillong ... and especially the people (bengalis) .... people who were very down-to-earth .... people who were simple & genuine ... and yet people who had a vision .... and an urge to do something in life !!!! Qualities which are very hard to find among non Sylethis/Shillongites ....

By the way ... Mr Dokhar ... who are you ? It seems that you are from my batch .... please reveal your identity ....

Since you stayed in the AG quarters...you must be knowing one person called Anup Choudhury. He is also from Edmunds. He is a scientist at Nuclear Science Centre, looking after the cryogenics part of the superconducting LINAC. By the way, Radhendu Das, VR Rao, Sujit Nandi majumdar of your college are great friends of mine.

Just cannot place Anup Choudhury by name ... maybe I know him by a different name..... is his nickname Ratan by any chance?

As far as Sujit Nany Mazumder is concerened, I met him a couple of years back at Assam University in Silchar .... he had left st. Edmunds. So had Prof S.B paul, Ramendu bhattacharjee and couple of others.

Radhendu Das ... our dear own Gopuda (that is his nickname at home) was planning to leave shillong ... but that was 2 years back ... I do not know their whereabouts now.

You also refered to Mohit Bhatt ... ajitdada ... as I call him ... is now in silchar ... he has settled there after his retirement ... or RE-TYRE-MENT as he prefers to call it. I am told that he has not been keeping very well ....

By the way ... did you know that St Edmunds College has now become a co-ed institiute.

Yes..Anup's pet name is Ratan. They have all shifted to Delhi, and they are my next floor neighbour. He is married, his sister Rakhi is also married [to a Rajput boy, staying in Bangalore now a days]. In AG Qtrs, one of my very close friends lived, called Bulbul/Susmita Das, one year senior to me. She is in Geological Survey.

Ramendu Bhatt is reigning in Silchar, that I have heard. In AU, I have another friend in Chemistry, called Chira Ranjan Bhattacharjee, or Raja Bhatt.

Mohit Kaku is a fantastic personality. What is "Sylheti Wit", one has to encounter Mohit Bhatt to know about. I have done many full length theatres with him. Can you imagine, a person copying each character's dialogues in his own hand and distribute personally. In those days, photocopy was not very easily available facility.

He is diabetic, and he used to describe it like..MON MON MUDHUTE MOHIT.

One of his creations is FATA BASHOR CHIPAT, which has also been performed by Silchar groups. If you happen to meet him some day, please pass over my pranam to him.

I think Ravi, you are feeling lost because you have lost hope.

A person is a loser, the moment he/she starts thinking.."why did I do it?" You instantaneously become a winner, the moment you think.."Now onwards" I am going to do this this this....

Research is a training period in life. It is very easy to work in a built up system, finishing PhD in three years [sometimes guide writes the thesis]. But that is not the end of everything. Your whole life is there. How are you going to feed your child, how are you going to pay his tution fees and pay the house rent, would come next. That is the time your training comes into picture.

You must talk to Sude. Have detailed discussion with him. Dialogue gives lots of hope.

U definately kow me and I know you too. Couple of years back when you were in UK and I was in Singapore we were in touch. Where are you now.

Pls contant me, there are couple of more our batchmates in US. Infact one is staying in the same city I am staying right now.

Thanks for mentioning the name HAROLD. The great man. Prof. Harold Roy. One of the two BSc's, who used to teach even MSc courses. He belonged to St. Anthony's, but in a way to the Science Community of whole Shillong.

I had the opportunity [or rather good fortune] to attend his Dynamics classes in 1978-79 in Mathematics pass class in BSc. I scored most of the marks in this subject only...believe it or not. I also had the oportunity to take tution from one of his students Mr. Bidyut Kar, in my Pre University [now called classXII] days. He taught me Calculaus and trigonometry for about six months, and I used all the tricks of trade right up to my MSc. A slow learner like me, I also taught so many students later on during giving tutions, some of the Haroldian ways of solving calculus problems.

I remember, we all used to wait for Harold egerly. He used to come 20 minutes late every day, bang into the room of Father Joseph [the only person in whole Anthony's to do so], keep his trade mark umbrella and pick up chalk and duster, and come swaying and trembling to the class.The black board would bear his heavily sweated palm marks, he would do about 12 sums in 20 minutes or so,... pin drop silence in the class, and then go away with trembling and swaying feet..out of the college.

His students are all settled probably in US or Europe or even in India. Where is he now? Is he still alive?

Alcohol is a dangerous stuff......it never spares even a moron, leave alone a genius like HAROLD.

Indeed a genious. I used to take tution from him in my PUC days. Those days he built a seperate house with 2 rooms(or 3, can't remember) for tutions only. One room used be for girls and other boys. Hmm...behind the walls lotz happening...

He will always come late. But if by any chance ur late he will say (his words) " so gentleman, are you expecting a red catpet welcome now".....hmm.....he used to speak some english boy....

Alcohol, he used to be Dr. Jekyl after having only. When he is not having, he is Mr. Hyde.

While I was in boarding school most of my life, my growing up years were spent in Shillong - 2 years in St. Margaret's (near St. Mary's) and then offcourse the vacations every year.

And then again, where else can you have the best time of your life and the best places to go out with a girl and feel the romance.

Hello Everybody and a special 'kita re, bhala ni' to Asiti and Kalyan. Also, thanks to Asiti for directing me to sylheti.com.
I too am a 'Shillongite' at heart (and by birth) and have lived in Shillong for almost three decades, before finally settling down in the US. I grew up in Laban and passed 'Matric' in 1976 from the erstwhile Laban Bengalee Boys' High School, did Pre.Univ. and B.Sc. from St. Anthony's, and completed M.Sc. and Ph.D. in chemistry from NEHU.
It is great to once again have a place where we all can meet and have a nice 'adda', though the 'Appayani Shiteng Cha and Long' will be greatly missed.
Wish you all a HAPPY DURGA PUJA. :D :D

Great to have a site like this and greater to read the syletnglish all have been messaging on --sad that i have spoken very spoken sylethi since 1995 , when i left Shillong as my parents are still in Shillong and my wife is from Kol --no no not a ghoti of course.

Well ami Rajeeb , bhala naam Shibaji , from Laban .Studied in St Edmund's School and did most of my education upto MSc Chem from NEHU in 94/95 .
I work for IBM and now in Copenhagen, Denmark now with my wife an son of 1yr 4months. Last Shillong e gecilam 1998 Pujate .Met old friends at Harishavá ..
True -siteng cha and singara of Appayni and Sukriti are missed and also the adda at Police Point and Laimu Point.

Astida , all the names u mentioned are very familier to me .SN Majumdar was my teacher in College and was doing his PhD in the same lab where i did my MSc theis .

Did you know one fact about MKC, that was divulged to us by Ramendu Bhatt (ex faculty Edmunds, presently AU Sil). In the drawing room of MKC, there was a small statue of Venus. There was also a piece of cloth wrapped around..... ;D ;D

I am in Wixhausen Darmstadt, in an institute called GSI, 20 km from Frankfurt. 20th Nov I would be back home. This week I am in Caen France.
