Tipaimukh Dam - A Bane for the Displaced oustees

Dear silcharites,
It is true that the completion of the much awaited Tipaimukh Project will meet the ever-growing requirements of power for the city-dwellers of the Barak Valley. But on the other hand, it would displace thousands of rural folk, who would loose their land in the catchment area of the dam. This would create havoc for them. Will they get adequate rehabilitation.
As the dam site is located on the trijunction of the three states - Manipur, Assam and Mizoram, it would involve rehabilitation of the dam oustees of the three states.
I hope the Central Govt. will take a macro view while going ahead with the construction work of the Tipaimukh Dam.
Thousands of forested and agro land will come under the dam area thereby such a valuable source will be lost.
One tends to think- for whose development the rural folk are going to sacrifice their land. It is for the development of urbanism that the Tipaimukh Dam will be built. This would ensure uninterrupted power supply for the city dwellers of silchar and adjoining areas so that the syhlleti/cachari/dimasa/bishnupriya manipuri urban families can sleep in peace and reap the benefits accruing from the construction of the dam. But what about the tribes inhabiting Tipaimukh ? They would loose their land and also their rich culture.
One solution is there-
Why not we built small micro dams which would benefit both rural and urban folk and not create a conflict between the two? This is the alternative suggested by Medha Patkar's Narmada Bachao andolon. Other alternatives-
Rain Water harvesting, traditional check dams to tap power. Solar energy should be encouraged instead.

kotha ta ekdom thik koiso...urbans rar aram er lagi rural ra sacrifice...same jeta calcutta hoilo..tollygunj thaki garia porjonto metro expand korar lagi....alternative kichchu hoite parto nai..dekhrai to medha patkar chitkar diya diya parisan ???...ektai kora jaite pare and that is by the youth of the adjoining area...they can find a menas of alternate living for these homeless people who are going to sacrifice their land for the construction of tipaimukh dam...karon administration thaki jotoi keu kouk alternate home diba eita implementation e aaite aaite jarar ghor jar tara moria bhut hoi jaiba kintu bari ba jaiga aar paito nai....government re youth ra urge korte pare alternate space provide korar lagi..aar joto din space na dewa hoi till then 'construction ta jaate ektu postponed kora hoi'...kintu ekta kotha na koia parram na je ei dam ta hoile kintu baut advantage aase..aar eita ekta fruitful event hoia daraibo jetare badha deoa uchit nai ...let it flourish by fair means :) |

Eai amar desher lagi obodan. Actually football cricket eta hoilo team game. Amara eklau goal dibar chesta/century korar chesta na koriya jodi shobey milia team banai teu giya ...aar kita koitam !!! :) :)

Dear Silcharor maiya,
I think that small dams are an alternative to big dams. Small dams help in balancing the fragile eco-system.
Silchar's electricity shortage can be met by other means-
1) by constructing a series of small dams in Barak Valley.
2) by using non-conventional sources of energy like wind energy, solar energy and also garbage waste. Garbage waste can be treated and could generate a lot of power.
The community can play a very important role in this.
The fragile ecosystem can also be saved.
3) Biogas , solar cooker for the cooking needs could be a suitable alternative.
You must remember a saying of Gandhiji-
"The Earth exists for everybody's need for everybody's greed."
4) Conservation of electricity by using energy saving devices.
These could be the possible advantages even if Tipaimukh Dam is not constructed in its present size and a mini small dam is constructed.
