Sylhet Referendum
«on: 07/26/04 at 00:54:15 »

The Sylhet Referendum held on 6th. & 7th. July 1947 is one of the decisive moments of our history .
The no of votes in favour of Pakistan was 2,39,619 & in favour of India was 1,84,041.

The Tea Tribes of 221 Tea Gardens were not allowed to vote following Gopinath Bordoloi’s “efforts” to somehow push Sylhet into Pakistan.

In his words ‘It was indeed the lifetime opportunity for the Assamese leadership "to get rid of Sylhet" and carve out a linguistically more homogenous province.
The partition of the country, for the Assamese leaders, was perceived not as a tragic development but as a ‘god-sent opportunity to carve out a  linguistically homogenous province.’

This development has touched our/our parents lives like none other.

A discussion on this subject will help us understand the circumstances we find ourselves in today. We also need to be aware of  what happened then and why?

Your valuable inputs/comments/information on the subject is solicited.

Decisive moment! yes. The decision made then has directed our destiny so far. The shrewd politician that he was Gopinath Bordoloi played the game well by his time. But look at the result, by marganilising the bengali (sylheti) hindus he paved the way for larg scale islamisation of the state that we see now. For the large scale flight of hindus from sylhet during the ensuing years was not only into barak valley but also into other provinces. In later years however the large scale muslim migration into was much more intensive then anywhere wlse.

In trying to get rid of sylhetis he in effect invited the impending islamisation of Assam.

As for us the sylhetis we are today in a unique position in history perheps akin to the Jews after their flight from Isral. We are disowned by everybody as refugiess. For the state government we are nothing but a people they would rather do away with had it not been for our votes and the central government even refuses to acknowledge the existance of our problems. But it hurts the most when our own people do the same in an effort to assimilate with the greater bengali society.

It is for us now to designe our destiny. It is time that we realise that we have a destiny beyond the destiny of individuals, we have a destiny as a linguistic group. No matter how disadvantaged or opressed our common identity is at the moment we have to realise that we do have a common destiny waiting for us to rise again.

Rupam bhai

ur signature line says it all.

"The glory lies not in not falling, but it lies in rising everytime you fall."

The jews fell and took more then 2000 years to rise but rise they did. I just hope it does not take all of 2000 years for us.

In my motherland 'Srihatta' I am minority,
In my adopted land 'Bharat' I am a refugee,
Seeking greener pastures in the 'West' I am an immigrant,
questioning my integrity and sincerity.

My opening statement of my thesis.

hi all
This is one of the best threads started ever,….if we talk about a goal……but..its  true we should redefine our goals for our ROOTS' cause..apart from our material gains ..money an cars … yaa..i agree  2 do something..... The early we start ,,the better will be the result....BUT WHAT WE SHOULD DO....to solidfy our existence in India(sylhetis present here  are the biggest % from those at other parts of the globe) .

..Our existence is endangered by the "migrating Muslims" in Assam....i  dont hate Muslims..as i , personally came in touch a few very good n respectable muslim fellows..but they came 2 India very early along with our ancestors n never do the things..like 1.cheering for Pakistan during Cricket match.. taking part or helping the crime in society right from " ghoti churi" to "daakati".....they want to take aside when ever a Muslim is there..whatever he is..how stranger/ corrupted he is..also our language in Barak valley has always been polluted by those of them( the migrator muslims)..such as we say" tumi koi  thaaikkya  aiso?" they say" tumar taain kaan toni aailen/ assilen?" ..ok its true i should not hate a dielect but ...i should keep vigil on proper existence of my language..first naa? Also  its very hard to digest that these muslim brothers who are always with Bangladesh/ Pakistan are mostly " converted Muslims " ( during war of '71)  and came to India (mostly afterwards) to get shelter by hook or crook.....

OK now  comes the question of our status in our own place...Barak velley,,or Assam as a whole..YES WE WERE NEGLECTED IN Earlier times..but now its a question of saving our existence from migrator..so must compromise something like...we should forget "TEMPORARILY" our previous experience with a portion of Assamese speaking people....and should just do anything together to stop migrators go high any where...in any sphere of society...BUT MY QUESTION IS WHAT N HOW WE SHOULD DO?

Also as an simulataneous phenomena, we should think how to nourish our mother tounge....the SYLHETI..(to me SILCHORI SYLHETI).. CAN'T WE JUST MAKE A FORUM/society TO STRENGTHEN IT through this site..My earnest appeal to ADMIN n those who are associated with this SILCAR.COM management....such as collection of all sylheti POEMS/ GOLPOS/ PHRASES.. DIALOUGES ETC... if idea is not that good.then AGAIN MY QUESTION IS WHAT N HOW WE SHOULD DO?

.WE ALL ARE WRITING N TALKING LOTS OF THINGS ...BUT DO WE FOCUS N GIVE STRESS ON THAT ATLEAST OUR NEXT GENERATION SHOULD LEARN TO TALK IN SYLHETI ( Apart from his reqd. medium of education/career)..NOT...AGAIN.. THIS ATLEAST WE SHOULD/MUST DO

HI DIDIBHAI
My question is what perfectly should we do to strengthen our existence as sylheti (specially the Hindus + few muslims{who came early}). of Barak valley...and prove its sound existence in the world,
1. make a forum/ organization?????with direct or indirect involvement of the all the sylhetis of Barka Valley( at home or at abroad..)????
2. Writing  thesis  or papers...on sylheti people/language????
3.Collecting the sylheti poems n write-ups...???
4.Documentary on sylhety GEET/SONGS,phrases,.. RITUALS etc...???
5. all the above????

..there are lots of things 2 do in every sylheti's heart ...but the important is HOW to DO.....I M asking u didibhai....as u are working a thesis on a part of this subject....what we should do to strengthen the existence sylheti language n the syliheti people  and save it from oblivion...u see very few of our next generation children are having the atmosphere of talking in sylheti---

For me, first is to keep talking in sylheti atleast at our home with our family members/ children..its difficult as its not a  academic/career language....but we should do it i think .

now  u all tell what more/ next things we can do?.( ALL THE AFORESAID  ? ? ??????)

ALSO CAN WE USE THIS SITE AS A PLATFORM OF OUR WORK????
aami-S ;) :D ;D

hello aami-s

As I said before your emotions on this subject touches my heart.  Yes, you're absolutely right, unless there are action plan to preserve the dialect it may just be lost in oblivion.  I am starting this thesis as starter of a main meal.  I hope to carry it through to a book. The research on the subject is proving to be very slow, as gathering information from various sources proves hard.  But, I am hopeful that it will come together one day.  I am in the publication business and have my own online magazine and working towards others too.  When I have enough information I will publish another magazine highlighting all the sub-sections you mentioned, ie, folk stories from Sylhet, geet etc. This is very close to me also, as I am related to 'Radharaman Dutta' whose lyrics still echo in Sylhet and beyond.

Thank for your reply.  Keep in touch.

Thank you Aami-s.

Yes, I have written to an organisation called  'Wordsmith' for some info.  But, if you feel you have any relavant info.  ie.  population data, pre and post independence of all groups it would be helpful or any other info that relate to the flight of Sylheti Hindus from Bangaldesh in 1947 & 1971 into Assam.
Thanks.

By the way Da-Bhai is in Karimganj at present.
