Shyleti idioms, phrases and proverbs.
«on: 12/05/03 at 05:22:18 »

Idioms, phrases and proverbs are the wealth of any language.
They make our expressions eloquent.
Though shyleti is a dialect, it
is very rich in all those jewels that were developed over time.
In fact, I heard that somebody
has made a book out of it.
My personal favourite is
"eki nachonya buri tar ufre paila dholor bari" ;D

Please post some more. For the benefit of the non shyleti viewers
why not give a English description or usage?
jaane na kuchiyar montro...haat dito jaay haafor gaato
Sounds like a proverb. It probably means that don't poke your nose in something you don't know.
Say for example,
Madon's father had a nice wall clock. One day Mandan volunteered to oil it. He opened the clock and ended up
with a hand full of gears. Then his angry father can say

jaane na kuchiyar montro...haat dito jaay haafor gaato
(He Who does not know how to handle a job should not emberk on it)
Nastya na janlay uthan tera
Meaning=Don't make excuses.

This one has found its place in mainstream Bengali too. Or it's the other
way round?
This has a Hindi equivalent too. I think the Hindi one is Nach na jane
aangan tera. Am I right?

[quote author=Addabaz
link=board=0011&num=1070596338&start=0#2 date=12/05/03 at 19:22:19]
Moraar uprya korar gha
Meaning: one trouble on top of another.
Used when someone already in trouble runs into some more trouble.

[quote author=Addabaz
link=board=0011&num=1070596338&start=0#2 date=12/05/03 at 19:22:19]
Rakhay krishna marya kay
Meaning=If you are lucky, nothing will happen to you.
or literally if God is protecting you, no harm will befall you

All three are very commonly used in Mainstream Bengali.

[quote author=Addabaz
link=board=0011&num=1070596338&start=0#2 date=12/05/03 at 19:22:19]
Randay Betiya chul bandhay na
Interesting one. Can somebody explain it?

Really liked these!. Keep it up.
to koite tengra buze
This phrase may be used to decribe somebody who just needs a hint to understand the whole matter.
It is like a complement. Means a smart guy.
I can say  buzcho ni ba, assami fua dat re ba. He beta to koite tengra buze. ;D

Jate matal tale thik :
Peto kil mari pori thak : shut up
paya bhari : proud
sat kando ramayan poriya sita kar bap : asking a stupid queation
Mura muri kore , dhusu nusu kore (remember Mihir Dutta sir using this phrase?): hesitating
Dhoriya-i mot-tat: going to a very complex problem without touching simpler ones.
When my teacher started teaching me algebra, he skipped a few chapters
and went to a very comples problem. I can say that "tain to dekhi
dhoriya-i mottat korra"
Ustad er mair sesh ratre.

That makes sense. "Kotar bavon"  means greedy? lobhi/petuk? what is Kota?

Sandipan,
I think meaning of "Sesh paise" is quite literal.

The actual meaning of kotar bavon in written bengali (kelu) is agradani brahmin. Their task is to carry out a part of rituals (shradh) after a person dies.
