Should Barak Valley be granted statehood ???

Barak Valley , ie the districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi has all the constituents that is needed to be declared as an independent state. We are linguistically and culturally very different from other parts of Assam. If Tripura can be a state, if Manipur can be a state , dont you think Barak Valley deserves to be an independent state ? Now it seems all regions which have strong extremist groups are given preferences, or atleast a thought as far as granting statehood is concerned. But just because we are peaceful , we have to pay a price. Barak Valley is the most peaceful region in the whole of northeast India. What do you think ???? |

I think you have a very point. The current BJP administration is very keen to grant statehood. They seem to subscribe to a philosophy of having smaller states. I think I like it. But I guess that doctrine is applied more towards bigger states like UP or MP. Assam is too small to divide again with only 14 loksabha seat. However if we can make sufficient noise, we may get what we want. I think Bengali majority areas of Tripura and Cachar could become a viable state. However I wonder if Bengalies in Brahmaputra valley would face any backlash due this. Assamese politicians might not be too happy about shrinking constituencies and another wave of "Bongali Kheda" might kick off. But for now nobody in Barak vally relly worry about a state. As they used to a decade ago. I am not sure what is the reason. May be the diminishing strength of student movement in Brahmaputra valley has made people less feel less threatened.
Regarding the extrimism, accept it that we are not too good at fighting even for our right. Most of us have been kicked out of our ancestral home without the slightest resistance. Now, those who has kicked us follow us back to our new settlement and we are napping. We would rather have a tempest in teapot then take a gun. |

hi, there are more important things that can be done except to fight for statehood . We can make Silchar a place which is a known Entity rather then a Seperated Entity . Its better to think in a positive and a constructive way so as to make Silchar a better place to live by contributing to it as much as possible , in whatever small way we can . It will be better if we think how to make silchar stand apart from other cities in our region or lemme say the country ...we can always work to highlight that ..say in field of education , culture , etc .I feel this will be more important to display as our Identity rather then fighting for crippled city state...What is the imporatnce of a state which will still remain poor ? Has nothing to show as its own . We are bestowed with so many good things an not forget our nature 's tremendous gifts!! Let us pool in ideas how to make it a better place for us to live and the world to see. regards king :) |

Dashu-bhai,
I can sense some contempt for the aboriginal tribes in your post. If you do not like the concept of Cacher getting a state, well and good. Why drag others unnecessarily? Such disdain divides the society and we end up being in a divided nation. Kol or Bhil, they are your brother, so are mine.
When it comes to statehood, I can not but concede that it probably won't be a panacea for all our miseries. But that might be step in right direction. Firstly, smaller state means a better administration. The major problem that plagues barak valley is its geographical isolation from the rest of the country. Every time I endeavour a journey from Guwahati to Silchar, I am reminded how gravely we lack infrastructure. Unless that infrastructure is in place, our race towards progress can never pick up full steam. Undoubtedly there is step-motherly attitude towards Barak valley in the current scenario. The way the construction work on broadgauge line is progressing, I shall be lucky if my grand children have an opportunity to take ride in that route (BTW I am in my 30s). If you ever make it through autobahns in Alps, you would wonder why such modern marvels cannot be constructed through Barail range? With a separate state we will be in a much better leverage to push for the infrastructure of our region. This will serve more than our identity.

problem to ita nai ... problem hoilo assembly je bonbo ... matro 13 ta seat -er assembly ... we need to break it into more seats... also we need more buildings for CMs house, assembly house etc. Statehood is quite a step in the right direction ... as the only money we get is from the cental govt ... now we will get a bigger share. And imp, this will lead onto a fresh new start for the region. Though i know once the statehood is decleared, all the bigwigs will be surely be getting ready into the huge pool of money the state will get . By the way, what will the state called ??? i dont support the motion as it will give birth to another kashmir. definitely the assembly seats has to be broken up to make more seats and this will give muslims the majority of the seats whereby we will face the prospect of a permanent muslim chief minister. for me i would rather prefer to fight the assamese. |

The debate between the advantages and disadvantages of big states versus small states is old, and much empirical evidence shows that small states tend to do better, even though they have their own set of problems. Thus, in north India, Punjab and Haryana are doing well as compared to the gigantic Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Even prosperous Maharashtra has seen demands for partition and the creation of a separate Vidarbha state. Ditto Andhra Pradesh, where the demand for a separate Telangana tends to come up every now and then. And some years ago there was the demand to partition West Bengal, allowing the Nepalese-dominated northern regions to become a separate state Let us never deride the fact that every society or segment of society fears its identity and culture being swamped, whether within the country or a province. Smaller segments within a state or province have legitimate fears of being overridden by larger and more powerful groups.. When in the mid-1980s there was a demand for a separate Gorkhaland carved out in northern West Bengal, among the many factors responsible was that ethnically, linguistically, and culturally, Bengalis and Nepalis do not have much in common. Can a Nepali ever become the chief minister of Bengal? Was it not similar fears that led the Biharis, decades ago, to demand -- and get -- a Bihar state separate from Bengal? In our case the problem is more a economical one than cultural. Confused has nicely depicted the scenario. When the first states were created in independent India, the principal organising factor was language. In the case of India's northeastern states, the key factor was ethnic tribes. The creation of Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, and Chhattisgarh now means that a state can be created for being a distinct territory within a huge province. So, on principle, if u can allow the creation of a Jharkhand and an Uttaranchal, why can't u support statehood for Barak Velley????

If such a precedent is set, after kichu din, Kol,Bhil, Munda hokol ti e my-state my-state koia chillaibo....The resulting commotion will be heard not only in India, but also to the blissfully ignorant ears out there in the US, which otherwise have no idea about the ground-level scenario. >:( >:( >:( >:(
In short, Statehood for Barak Valley is as impracticable as Motherhood for Bagmati (the hermaphrodite in Khushwant Singh's Delhi).... >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

There has been no reply on this issue since oct. 2003. Is this the strength & dedication of the people of Barak and their dream of statehood?
for "comfortably numb" you really are a very numb person. Your name exactly describes why Barak people tend to take back seat when it comes to fighting for a cause. As for further under-development of Barak due to separation from Assam, well you only have to look at the last 57 years and compare other parts of Assam with Barak. The decision making powers, legislation & policies are key factors in driving development and if you have no veto at the assembly level then how are going to put your views forward. Demanding a separate state will not only give local people powers to make changes in the region but also provide the Sylheti's a distinct identity. But, the wider question here, is the polities of the region and whether the present political situation allows good governance? Furthermore, will it isolate Sylheti Hindu's, exacerbate infiltration from across the borders? These factors will have to be weighed up, as they will possess greater danger than the present situation of being a part of greater Assam. |

Hi Didibhai Can't agree more on what u said. But the only danger here is that all the prominent politicians will start jumping for their share of power and money. If a separate state is created, there will surely be allocation of huge funds, which will be more misused as usual more than being used. But I also feel that it is a risk worth taking, as Barak Valley is treated the same way by the Guwahati administration as they are treated by the Delhi administration. Things cannot get worse than they are now keeping in mind the poor infrastructure of the Barak Valley region. |

Horo re ba !!!! ita kita lagailai
just look into history of assam re the bengali dominated areas and you will know why we are better off where we are.
Gopinath Bordoloi thought the same and gave away sylhet to east pakistan because of linguistic similarities. If we become separate then in few decades there will be a demand for greater bengal like greater nagaland and greater tamil nadu. And we will see ourselves land up in bangladesh.
Even if we start the agitation now for a barakland then all the linguistic groups in india will start demanding statehood. The biharis/oriyas/marwaris of assam will also demand the same. ultimately we will get for ourseleves some sort of arrangement like that of karbianglong autonomous district council. Therefore statehood is not the answer. On the contrary I think all the NE states should be merged together to form a single greater assam state. |

This topic reminds me one dialogue of a Hindi Movie Lakshya, "Shukar hain Chand aasman pe hain nahi toh yeh matlabi insaan is ke bhi tukre kar lete". Why do we always think running out of a problem and creating our own world? Why do we always prefer short cuts? Can some one assure if not all few of the present problems of Barak Valley will go away in that newly formed state in current political situation of India? Looking at the present situation of those newly formed states I must say forming another new state and running it properly is not as good as typing in this forum seating in a A/C room. Let's face the ground reality can any one name a good and dominated leader who can do something really good once the sate of your dream is formed. Once I thought may be S.M. Dev but neah!!! Looking at the present condition of Silchar I must say "NOT NOW". When the whole world is marching ahead don't you think India is having enough hurdle to cross. Let's make it a smooth path as much as we can do, don't feed those stupid politicians with ideas like this.
Cheers -Sid |

I gave it a good hard thought. It does not seem to be such a good idea. As then within a few years "Amar Sonar Bangla" may become our national anthem. Have u thought in these lines? To get ourselves free from a lesser evil, we might find ourselves in the grasp of a greater evil. |

Anyone has wisdom about the benefits and oitfalls from creating such a small statehood? It's no fun having learnt a lot from Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya and others. They are extreme in their views or don't believe democracy. All the smaller states should be merged back into the greater Assamese state and the various tribes should thrive to cultivate the various flavors to enrich their own culture, education and technology and help making a strong bond among us. We need their help to create the opportunities or exchange ideas about how to make our lives better and help others. |
