hey u said ur from chandighat tea estate well i had few friends from that place too when i was in 4 but never had contact with them after that. i can only recall 2 names nidhi and amit, i wish u know them so that i can have contact with them.... tell me if u know them..

Nishchoy...Nishchoy....How can i miss this opportunity to say something about myself....there are two bengali words that defines me entirely, namely:

LAVENDISH, OSTOROMBHA......
my association with Silchar doesn't require any description, coz' both my childhood and youth have smelled the air, tasted the water and felt the soil of silchar.....out of silchar since last 4 years....

Hello Arindam,

Nice thread to get to know people.

But as someone said most people hide their id.  I am not from Silchar but my maternal uncles & Aunts are.  My paternal home is in Hailakandi, in-laws in Karimganj. So I am a true Barrack Vallian.

I came to the UK with my parents in my childhood.  Have lived here for 34 years. That tells you roughly my age.  Started life breached!! That is got married before finishing education, had may family now back to the youthdom.  I graduated as a mature student, in Media & third world politics.  I am at present small editor of a small publication.  Most of my friends here in the UK are Gujarati's. I don't know how they are in India, but here "oh boy, they are kinchus" ( misers).  They count every penny, and even eat baked beans with roti.  I had to teach my best friend,  literary, how to be hospitable.  We have been friends for 33 years.  But then we are Sylheti's, always welcoming!!!

Finally, there are alot of Silcharites here in the UK.  Infact, there are alot of Sylhetis B.V here.

Good Morning Didibhai,

Glad to know about yourself. Almost 34 years in UK. In 34 years how many time you had visited back home that's Barak Valley and last when. How do you find the difference of life style between sylheti's settled in UK and here at Barak valley. I feel there shouldn't be any difference it depends upon the people how you keep your culture in yourself and pass it to the next generation.

You rightly said that Gujarati's are kinju's. To take out money from them is really hard. I am presently working at a Offshore software development center at Baroda Gujarat for the last 10 years and most of my colleagues are Gujarat's and except few all of them i found all of them kinju's.

Hi,

I am Abhishek and I am currently working in Bangalore. I stumbled upon this site while searching for bangla mp3s. I found this site extremely interesting and I have been a regular visitor since.

My parents are from Kolkata, I did my schooling in Gujarat and Kolkata and my mother tongue is Daccaiya. Well, as you see, I am not related to Silchar or Sylhet, but that hasn't stopped me from learning Sylheti. Luckily enough, I have made one Silcharite friend at my workplace and we do talk in Sylheti in office!

I would love to visit Silchar in near future and try some authentic Sylheti cuisine!

Regards to all ;D

Hello Arindam,

thanks for your reply.  I haven't visited this site for the last few days.  been very busy.  Sylheti's in the UK are very diverse here. Some families have moved towards integration with the host community and call it 'modernisation', some families have not changed at all and call it 'preservation', and some families have moved on but retained good aspects of Sylheti culture and tradition.  Where do I fit in?  I'll leave the conclusion to you.

I do visit Barrack quite often, as my family are spread all over Silchar, Hailakandi and Karimganj.  Maternal, paternal, and in-laws. The last time I visited Barrack was Feb. 2003. I must say, I do find the lifestyle quite exhaustive.  One of the goods things about living in the UK is its individuality, serenity,
privacy, working culture, punctuality and time keeping. But, among all the chaos back home it is the love and attention that I go back for again and again, and that is missing here.

By the way, all my immediate family live here in the UK,  I visit my cousins and in-laws because they are such a loving bunch.

I prefer to remain anonymous. Just several words defines me - Ambikapatty resident. I believe every silcharite must have known who founded A.C.H.S. Probably, none has recognized me because of generational gap and my absence from the city over too long. There is no point of picturing myslef, who is nearing the retirement age.

Good luck to all silcharites.

Hi all,
Nice thread to know each other better...
Well I spent my childhood in Brahmaputra valley, then landed in Silchar just about 4 years before reaching adulthood. From then Silchar has been my home, and now that I am miles away, on the other side of the globe, I miss my Silchar...
I did my schooling(in Silchar) from Holy Cross
then G C College...wow !!
then had to move out of town for studies, then work......it has been now 9 years, I visit Silchar only on "vacations" now !

Hi all!!!

Its really nice to know you all!!!

I spent my childhood in Brahmaputra valley and then after that 10+2 to Masters in Sichar!!! after that I am here in delhi......working in and trying to get hold of a good career.

What I found I miss that place because all my kith and kins are there...spent 7 years of my life there...my teachers, college, University days...I really miss those no-worry-only-fun days!!!!!!!

Now things have become more serious, and the me within myself, I feel at times...has changed a lot. May be that simpicity has gone ... when I used to think everyone around me is speeking the truth and nobody is selfish and got good intention ::)

But life is like that...I know.
