Sadarghat Bridge !!
«on: 05/30/04 at 13:07:56 »

I just received a mail from a person who claims to have designed the barak bridge (sadarghat bridge).

Excerpts from the mail:
I spent the years 1963-65 working as a bridge design engineer for Gammon India Ltd. in what was then Bombay. One of the more interesting jobs I did was to design the superstructure of the Barak Bridge at Silchar. If my memory serves me correctly I also worked on the design of Lubha Bridge. I spent some time in Shillong working through my calculations with the PWD engineers there and paid two visits to Silchar.

I should like to obtain some information about the current condition and use of Barak Bridge and would particularly like to have some photographs of it. The black and white photographs I have were taken during and shortly after construction, which was completed soon after I left India.

===> from the next mail:
Correction, by the way. I didn't build the bridge. All I did was the detailed structural design of the superstructure, that is the calculations. In those days the electronic calculator hadn't yet been invented: we used a sliderule and wrote our calculations out by hand.

Our site agent, responsible for the construction, was a young Punjabi called Dhawan, not yet thirty as I recall. About the same age as I was.

Our boss was a great engineer called T. N. Subba Rao, who at the age of 76 is still active in his profession. From my signature, you'll see that I've changed mine and become a writer.
