AICTE-ISTE STTP ON IT APPLICATIONS IN INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (March, 1-10, 2004) at CENTRAL LIBRARY, NIT, SILCHAR ___________________________________________________ Introduction: Information technology has come to stay as an indispensable tool for library operations & services. In the present era, information arena is witness to an exciting plethora of technological advances, which have, to a great extent, been responsible for immeasurable enhancement in human knowledge. Technology has also provided the means of managing this knowledge through the strengthened capabilities of collecting, storing, processing, packing and transmitting information. Librarians must be continuously updated with knowledge and skills in the areas of information resources, tools, access modes, technology, management & research and the capability to integrate all these for rendering library and information services efficiently and effectively. The short-term programme will address these issues in detail using lectures, demonstrations and hands-on-sessions spanning 10 days. The participants are expected to gain in-sight into the Information Technology (IT) applications in the library and resource centres.
Programme objectives: The focus of the course will be to provide an opportunity to the participants to acquire knowledge on: Ø Developments in IT: Current Trends & Future Prospects. Ø IT application in Library & Information Centres. Ø Strategies for adopting IT in Library & Information Centres. Ø Identifying the current challenges & emerging prospects in Library Networking & its implementation. Ø Impact of IT on Human Resource.
Course Structure: The course is designed to give insight into the following aspects: Ø Application of IT in Library & Information Centres. Ø Library Automation Ø Digital Library Ø Networking & Internet Ø Bibliographic Database Management System Ø CD- ROM Database based Services Ø Library Website Design & Development Ø Internet as Information Source Ø Consortia based Subscription Ø TQM in LIS
Programme Faculty: Eminent faculty members/experts from various institutions throughout the country will deliver the lectures/practical/technical sessions.
Course Material: The participants will be provided with comprehensive course material on the issues related to the training programme.
Eligibility: The programme is meant for librarians/faculty involved in the management of libraries in Polytechnics/Engineering Institutes and other professionals associated with the library management. Interested candidates from other institutions, industry and Government departments could also be accommodated on payment basis subject to availability of seats.
Conditions regarding TA/DA: The teaching faculty and librarians in AICTE pay scale, from AICTE recognized institutions will be paid second class train fare, in the shortest route, for attending the programme. The Librarians should produce a certificate from concerned head of the institution stating that they are in the UGC/AICTE pay scale.
How to Apply: Those desirous of applying for this course are requested to submit the duly sponsored application in the format enclosed to the course coordinator so as to reach on or before 25.12.03. Selected candidates will be intimated by Post/Fax/e-mail. Selection will be based on the interest of the participants for attending the programme as per AICTE/ISTE norms. The seats would, however, be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
Course fee: Ø For faculty/librarians from Polytechnics/Engineering Colleges & librarians in AICTE pay scale: Free Ø For Library professionals from academic institutions : Rs 1800/-* ( Rs 800/- for local participants) Ø For participants from the industry and R&D institutions : Rs 3000/-* (*Course fee includes course kit, lunch & refreshments. Application form should be enclosed with a demand draft for the course fee drawn in favour of “Coordinator, AICTE-ISTE STTP” payable at SBI, REC Silchar Branch).
Important Dates: The ten-day programme will be held during 01-10 March, 2004 from 9.30 AM to 5 PM. However the practical sessions may be held in the evenings. The selected participants are expected to reach NIT, Silchar by the previous evening or morning before the commencement of the programme. About the Institute: The National Institute of Technology Silchar is one of the premier national level institutions for technical education in North East India. Government of India as a joint venture with Government of Assam established Regional Engineering College, Silchar in 1967 with the objective of imparting quality-engineering education, providing cosmopolitan outlook among students and development of National Integrity. Recently, the Government of India in a move to upgrade the institute has taken-over the institute and has named it National Institute of Technology with a Deemed University status. It offers 5 UG courses and recently 5 PG courses have also been approved by AICTE. The institute has a very good infrastructure and posses one of the most advanced computing environment present in this part of the country. The institute is situated in an extending campus about 540 acres of undulating land and lakes surround by tea estates and hillocks providing an ideal environment for studies. The institute is located on the Silchar - Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 K.M. away from the railway station/bus stand. Silchar is linked to the rest of the country by road, rail and air. Transport facilities by the way of day super/night super bus, trains are available from Guwahati to Silchar.
About the Library: The library is located in an easily accessible and in a central position in the campus in a separate building. The library can accommodate about 100 students at a time in the reading hall. At present it has about 49,000 volumes of books, 7000 back volumes, 1000 video cassettes, 500 technical reports, 900 CD-ROMs and 156 periodicals, mostly technical, are being subscribed. The library is subscribing all major on line technical journals through INDEST Consortium. The library is kept open from 6 AM to 10 PM on all weekdays. It is having CD-ROM database on BIS, ASTM, ISO (IT) etc. The Central library has been actively involved in the library automation related activities. It has organised five programmes:
Ø Invited lecture of Prof. Judith P. Fabisch, Chair, Division of Humanities, Cornerstone University, USA on “Post Modern Literature in the New Millennium” on 22nd Feb. 2000. Ø Invited Lecture of Prof. John Meadows & Dr. Chris Horner, Education Division, South Bank University, London on “Internet in Education” on 14th Apr. 2000. Ø CSIR New Delhi sponsored INSDOC, New Delhi Conducted Training Programme on “Computer Application on Library & Information Activities” from 20-24th Feb. 2001 at Central Library, REC Silchar for the Library Information Professionals in the North Eastern Region. Ø AICTE-ISTE, New Delhi sponsored STTP on “IT Applications in Library & Information Management/Services” from 18-27th Feb. 2002 at Central Library, REC Silchar. Ø Invited Lecture on “Youth and Values” on 15th Mar. 2002 by Prof. Jatin Mohanty, Secretary, Satsang Vihar, New Delhi at Central Library, REC Silchar.
