Spearheading : Probably the middle row of the swimming pool which is given to the swimmer with the fastest timing in the heats ( something similar to "pole position" in racing )
With him/her expected to lead, the wave formation is likely to resemble a spear-head.
Is this correct ? |

2. 'Spearheading' is placing the fastest qualifier in the central lane and so on till the slowest are placed in the outer lanes
3. This is a pass played so close to the opponent's player that the teammate risks injury in controlling the ball

the drag on water left by the central lane swimmer slows down swimmers at the sides (swimmers at outermost lanes are the worst affected). because of this edvantage, the fastest qualifier takes the central lane and so on.
