Durga puja has become commercialised in the sense that it has now become more of a competitive event. There are many puja committees who make unnecessary expenditures by hiring celebrities at high price. This is leading to useless competitions which at times lead to conflicts. silchar is known for its pandal competitions. Where is it leading to? Do we really need so much of competitions to emerge in order to enjoy the pujas? Moreover isn't it a question of ethics that we indulge in such a glamorous game in the name of the goddess.

For me puja means the only time in the year that i feel home sick... silchar.com's maha adda adds some more home sickness into myself... anyways i get the feeling of silchar staying out of silchar thru this site... puja means hell lot of pain (to me)...thats the only time when all friends can get together, but its not possible with me because of the fu**ing time of my college...puja means reunion, Â no tensions, no studies and full masti....

Gentleman,
I think you have ask a soul searching question to all Bengalis who used to admire Durga Puja, Kali Puja and other Pujas with total devotion of expectancy and admiration. But in recent times all these Puja’s have turned in to a “Season of Gunda Tax” to the shame of all literate and ordinary Bengalis.
In the name of Puja a bunch of illiterate, job less Bengali youth has turned all the Puja times in to a literal hell. Collecting money by compulsion, threat and at times murdering innocent people. I have found from the reliable newspaper records that, from the year 1970 till 2002, (Three hundred forty nine) 349 people have been murdered in Chanda (Donation) related violence in Bengali dominated areas of India. Out of these 349 murdered people in last 32 years 311 of them were Bengalis and 38 were non-Bengalis!
A lot of unaccounted donations are collected in the name of Pujas and are divided among these Gundas and the balance of fund are spend for gambling, drinking and even for prostitution. Businessmen and individuals who are not willing to pay the demanded amount are paid through their lives and properties while police and district administration watches the fun!
Now dear visitors of SILCHAR.COM please inform me which god or goddess of mighty Hindu religion have ask for such barbaric inhuman torture and torment in the in the name of Puja? How long our Bengali society will tolerate such heinous crimes in the name of Puja donation?
Our non-Bengali businessmen and individuals are paying these Gonda Tax through their nose every year. What will happen to Bengalis that are scattered around the globe and non-Bengali areas of India, if they are demanded identical Gonda Tax by the other communities?
I, personally have deep respect for all those Pujas and Puja committees where method of force donations are never used and after the Puja the unutilized funds are properly audited and used for further charitable purposes.
Therefore, now I will leave up to the visitor of this page to answer what “Puju” means to Bengalis in certain part of Bengali areas.
