North Indian or south indian?

Recently, I have been asked this question so many times that I thought I would hear your opinion on this.
My definition of North Indians are people from Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, partly UP etc. South Indians are people from Deccan plateau. There is nothing like east, west or central Indian. Hence that leaves a very confused group of people who are neither north Indian nor south Indian. I have noticed that Oriyas and Marathis are equally confused. I never really thought I would fall in any category. I was very happy with my Indianness. But after coming abroad I realized that Indian expatriates tend to form group in north or south flavour. If you go there you are bound to be asked these sort of questions. I don't know how to give a politically correct answer to this question. It is not that somebody would bar me from visiting such an organization for what I think but people seem to get a little upset when I show my reluctance to adhere to any of these groups. What do you guys think? Is it something you guys faced or am I just day dreaming again? |

yeah confused. i have been facing this problem for the last two years.there is always a tendency in our college to regionalise students(i dont know about other colleges.)i am studying in a college in the south.here groups are formed according to regions and there is always a fight between the northindians and the southindians as such. we, guys are accepted as the ones that belong to neither of these an so we enjoy a favourable position with both.but still u cant rule out that there is always a tendency to divide anyone present into either of the two categories. |

You are right Devi, there lies the confusion. There is no such thing as East Indian. If you are in a situation where you have to aligh with one, who do you aligh with? My quest remain neutral seem to have earned wrath from both the factions. |

hi Mr. Confused,
why are u getting confused and irritated with north and south. look whenever we consider map we have lots of direction in which north, south,east & west prevails. isn' it? so when on the earth anybody ask u of ur position just say that u r neither from north nor south, there is another region and thats north-east. 'm also out of my place and whenever somebody asks me this, i just simply reply that I am from north east. thing that really irritates me when somebody ask me u r bengali but u r not from kolkata? why? >:( |
