During my years of competitive quizzing,I hated the audio rounds as it somehow always violated my idea of enjoying music...my partner Rajib listened religiously to all kinds and memorized a whole world of info so that we could net points...that saved me a lot of trouble and I went on my own way...singing is pretty big in my family so I guess in a way, that helped...I was more into the nuances,the tunes, the beats, the base, the backing vocals and sometimes, the poetry...doI heard only what I liked ...ita kuno oshudh ba sukhto ni je bhala naa lagleo gilte laaagbo ?? Golden Oldies - Amar onek gaan bhala laage from this genre...Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, James House,Simon & Garfunckle...lot of old and new movies have lot of songs of this type in the OST which are truly wonderful, even to a first-time listener...I have a few very good tapes and mp3s...kichchu kichchu jazz based gaano besh arresting, even for ppl who dont listen to such stuff. Rock - Pink Floyd re thik rock mone kori naa tobe "Hey You" and " Comfortably Numb" remind me of my days at Jamshedpur where I had no work,some money and a lot of time, friends and mindblowing musical equipment.E chara Bryan Adams ( had the privilege of seeing him live),Scorpions ( Holiday)and a few songs from GnR and Deep Purple...that's all ! Couldn't care less about the rest. And yes,Punjab an Rajasthan are good too...especially well-sung Heers. Ghazals / Thumris beshi naa...ektu ektu...kuno kuno shomoy...most ofthe poetry is good but you tend to like only a few ones...I've seen a lot of ppl suriviving on this only...hardly surprising but not always the right stuff for me.. Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti- khoob ekta shuni naa,in fact CD/tape to ekdomi shuni naa...tobe keu (bhala koriya) gaile bhalau laage majhe majhe...Rabi Thakur has a song for every damn situation and emotion conceiveable. "megher kole rodh hesheche..." was the first full song that I ever learnt to sing along with "Door deshi ek rakhal chele"...and "Prothomo aadi tobo shokti..." prothom harmonium bajaiya gaite sikhsilam...so they are all sentimental favourites with lots of memories attached...I've also had my share of dance dramas like Chitrangada. Jibon Mukhi Bangla gaan - I get into fights for this. Suman Chatterjee...no-goddamn-one else...the rest are too simple,too cliched, too tacky,too LS..I wonder how they sell at all and have so many fans...they have the right to...but i feel they shouldn't be allowed...my apologies to all, but I've seen such crap being quoted to great lengths in certain threads out here...i'll be happy when those are deleted beyond retrieval. Anyone is much better off with Manna Dey,Hemanta, Chinmoy, Salil Choudhury and if you are game for Assamese music, Jayanta Hazarika ( the younger brother of Bhupen who should have got 100 times the fame Bhupen has had he not passed away early). I'm also a big fan of Zubeen Garg and have had the privilege of being up close with him quite a few times and also seen him at his recording studio...sheer genius ! A freak of nature ! This guy leads the unruliest of lives,hardly practises and yet composes,writes,plays,sings,mixes...does it all. I also like an assortment of what we collectively call "Kirton". Most people get bored when I talk about this so I hardly do. But the music is phenomenal if you listen properly and are lucky enough to come across the really attractive types.There is a veritable sea of choices so one would definitely find a few types that hold appeal.I am familiar with quite a few genres that probably don't exist in too many places...would definitely learn more about them...this process in ongoing for me...I'm not much into religion, but kirton I'm definitely hooked to...not the Hare Krishna oshtoprohor stuff set to hindi film tunes that rob your sleep and peace...listen to thaat, choutaal, baul kirton,ojhar gaan from Poddopuran...rocks ! or should I say kirtons ???!!!!:D Hindi gaan- Beshi kichchu lekhtam nai...my memories with many songs are like most of you...those childhood days thru Puja pandal mikes, no cable tv,mp3 or cds and very limited tapes. maybe the occassional " sainik bhaiyon ke liye" on Radio Ceylon and " Network Chitrahaar" and "Rangoli" on TV if I woke up on time on Sundays. The T Series Rs 18 revolution and the irritating Jhankaar Beats...onto student life and hostel days and very very late nights with desks and buckets for percussion...the worst singers sang on stage during my college days...or so I thought...jam sessions in college and much more organized ones towards the beginning of my professional life...i still do indulge myself a bit these days...a few friends come over...I have a guitar (cant play myself) and keyboards ( can play a bit) ready...home cooked food...few hours of bliss !! And each day the type of music varies with the operative mood...the keyboards were a shock gift from my good friend Arunabha  Deshmukhya who carted the whole thing along from London after his first trip as a surprise...how many of you have friends like that ?? Unfortunately, many many of his songs were confined to Geetimalika program only. It was his widow Promeela [a bengali from Kolkata] who took a step in repriving some of his songs, and those are only available in CDs and Cassettes. Some people say, all of Jayanta's songs contain sadness. Possibly, but I look for the strange melody, twists and turns breaking the predictable aroh/abroh patterns. Some similarites with style of Shyamal Mitra? Jimut..do you remember Rombha Menoka..by Jayanta? "pan khaiyo sayiaan humar, mal mal ke kurte pe chiit lal lal" amazing frivolousness in the voice... salil chowdhury has always been consid3red to be among the best music composer in Hindi movies...particularly background scores and all...the other day...about a week back I was listening to bibidh bharati or something on the radio...it carried an interview with antara chawdhury...the daughter of the legend...and inbetween were some of his never forgettable pieces... I do not know how many of you still listen to AIR, but once ina  while do tune in there...its really very very soothing... a couple of kishore duets I feel like mentioning...these have always been very close to my heart... 1. do panchee do tinke kaho leke chalen hain  kahan yeh banayenge ek aanshiyaan/ yeh banayenge ekk aashiyaan... this features aarti mukherjee along with kishore kumar...I have played this song in numerous quizzes, and I have been shocked not one single person being able to identfy the female voice and some of the most well known quizzards of Silchar we around...also I have used this song in my quizzes during my PG...and some of the finest quizzing brains have never been able to answer this... 2. sa re ga ma... are ga re mere sang mere sajna... hema malini and sashi kapooor perhaps...she trying to teach her how to sing songs... very melodious song. in the end...two songs from the group euphoria... the first I had heard back in 1998 when during the Puja Holidays I had travelled to Bangalore...and along with a friend of mine, Rajat, while we were returning, we reached the station from RTNAgar...where we were staying... new televisions were inmstalled in the bangalore station...and we had just one RAC seat between the two of us...mon un kharap...oto rasta boiya jaiye lagbo...station o gelam giya ratre belai...besh shokaler dik e train ta asil...gesi...giya bowat...tokhon prothom bar euphoria r eii gan ta dekhsilam... "khwaish" a movie from the Govind Menon house, is a lift off from "Love Story"...there are also a couple of others...I cant remember rightaway the names, but I would try and post those here....maybe a quick google search would help in this manner. Man Woman and Child was released in 1983. So was Masoom. There is no way in which this could be an adaptation from the English movie. I was wrong, for I did not know the release date of MOAC. A friend this morning sent me an  interview url of Sekhar Kapoor...there is clearly agrees to have been inspired by erich segal...and also draws a comparison between his movie and the english variant. So, very unlikely that he would have ripped his plot from the english one. Just that they both goth inspired by the same book. And I cant say they are non moolah seeking, though they could well be non moolah raking. Thats because they are probably not up to it yet.
