All of us listen songs, but the taste always varies from individual to individual. The taste of a person generally depends upon his/her current state of mind.....
But, there are some songs which we'ud like to listen throughout our life....
I'm not starting this string to share your most liked song/s, but to know the reason behind that..... |

"ek din aap humko yuh mil jayenge" ita boro bhala gaan ba...maane chin chin ektaa bedna dhorai dey aarki...

eii chair taa gan ami chuto thekiya bhala laage...maane ita hoilo osadharon gan...keu jodi er moidhye kuno ekta suniya na thko re ba, ek bar sunio...kharaap lagbo mone hoy naa...
Getting back to your topic, on why we like such songs...my guess is...probably we can relate to certain songs better...in the sense that a particular situation in life, phase in life or circumstance in life just zooms back to mind on listening to certain songs...and then each sentance just happens to strangely tell your own tale... also...they might just not be reflections of events that have happened in the past...but handles to you aspirations also... and the beauty of Hindi film songs is that...between them they seem to sum our lives up very well...situations and incidents...and you have one relating to every event...almost. Whichever is more closer to your heart, you seem to get stuck with a song that relates to it...

Mrinmoyda has started a very nice string, music is what shares your sorrows and multiplies your happiness. Some of my favourites are Aaj phir jine ki tamanna hai aaj phir marne ka irada hain.
Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya har fikro ko naashe main urata chala gaya zindagi ki na tute lari pyar karle ghari do ghari
kya hua tera vaada woh kasamm woh irada chalkayain jaam iye aapke hoto ke naam haatho ke naam. Honthose chu lo tum mera geet amar kordo
chawndvi ka chand ho ya aftab ho Zindagi ka safar hain ye kaisa safar
tuin jaha jaha chalega mera saya saath hoga
chalo ekbar phirse ajnabi banjaye hum dono
Kashmir ki kali huin main mujko na chuna babuji
khil te hain gul iha khil ke bichr ne ko
kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khyal ata hain
dost dost na raha pyar pyar na raha
tere mere milan ki ye raina naya koi gul khilaye gi
oh saathi re tere bina bhi kya jina
dil to hain dil dil ka etbaar kya kijiye
and many more concluding here with one more mere bhaiya mere chanda mere anmol ratan tere badle main duniya ki koi chis na loo As rakhsha bandhan is coming.

Silchari buddhi abar kita ? Poisha ita kita gaaso dhore ni ? Eirokom impulse-e ek-duita gaaner laagiya 300-600 taka diya CD kiniya pore onek koshto paisi...er lagiya aaijkail ektu careful :D
Tobe aij onek din pore kinchi koyekta incidentally...I'm sure keur interest thakar kotha nai tobuo for timepass' sake lekhmu : 1. Forrest Gump er VCD ( great movie with great OST ) 2. Jayanta Hazarika, about 15 songs, about 10 of my favourites ( goniya kinchi :D ) 3. Sheryl Crow greatest hits ( bejaan daam CD taar, cassette kinlam :D :D itao Rs. 165/- :-[ tobe worth it.
Back to original topic...I guess ekshonge shamna shamni boiya eishob er adda dewa uchit to do it justice...majhe majhe gaantain gaiya shunalai/shunlai...jai houk, hei option ta to nai...so...
Keu keu dekhlam chance e prochur funda dilaisoin along with unnecessary doses of Americanized attitude...thank you...hashi pailo ektu ektu...koyekjoner tain poriya besh bhala laglo aar gaan guli mone hoilo...ekhon amiyo ektu funda dilai aarki...
I guess everyone has a taste for a certain kind/s of music that is influenced by many things right from childhood...but the trick is to "acquire" a taste...and that involves only one thing...Exposure to different kinds...some you hate, some you like, some you begin to like and it slowly grows on you...objective is to broaden your horizon of listening to that you miss out on as little as possible.
During my years of competitive quizzing,I hated the audio rounds as it somehow always violated my idea of enjoying music...my partner Rajib listened religiously to all kinds and memorized a whole world of info so that we could net points...that saved me a lot of trouble and I went on my own way...singing is pretty big in my family so I guess in a way, that helped...I was more into the nuances, the tunes, the beats, the base, the backing vocals and sometimes, the poetry...doI heard only what I liked ...ita kuno oshudh ba sukhto ni je bhala naa lagleo gilte laaagbo ?? Jeta ichcha ita khao ! eitai moja with music. olosh maanush, grammar kunodin shikhsi na kosto koriya...I still indefinitely push back my piano lessons...kintu I feel ektu technicalities jaanle beshi bhala appreciate kora jai...both Indian as well as western...so learning a bit of all that still remains on my TO DO list.
I definitely wont state that my taste is best and should be emulated...in fact, its quite eccentric according to a lot of ppl I know...but then,I have my own logic for that am happy with my likes and dislikes...ya,I DO want to explore a bit more of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Opera and also some more about the grammar of our gharelu music...bortoman funda khoob limited, as very few ppl I know are interested or pass on their knowledge and views to me.
Rupam reba...tumi jeta koilai ita hoilo Kenny Rogers' "Coward of the County"...very moving song with a typical twisty tale...as is the case with most country numbers...my all time favourite by Kenny is " "Rueben James"...its about his idolation of a black lady labourer in a racist society who helps everyone in need despite being despised by all and sundry...lyrics are just awesome and also the tune...the ending is classic
One dark cloudy day they brought you from the fields And to your lonely pine box came Just the preacher,me and the rain Just to sing one last refrain for Rueben James Rueben James...you still walk the furrowed fields of my mind Faded shirt, weathered brow, calloused hands upon the plough Loved you then, and I love you now Rueben James
I'd die for the ablility to pen such words...
add to that list Dolly Parton, John Denver,Don Williams and you have a treasure trove of songs...aar beshi naa shunleo hoibo but you'll still be a country Connoisseur.
Golden Oldies - Amar onek gaan bhala laage from this genre...Engelbert Humperdinck, Frank Sinatra, James House,Simon & Garfunckle...lot of old and new movies have lot of songs of this type in the OST which are truly wonderful, even to a first-time listener...I have a few very good tapes and mp3s...kichchu kichchu jazz based gaano besh arresting, even for ppl who dont listen to such stuff.
Rock - Pink Floyd re thik rock mone kori naa tobe "Hey You" and " Comfortably Numb" remind me of my days at Jamshedpur where I had no work, some money and a lot of time, friends and mindblowing musical equipment.E chara Bryan Adams ( had the privilege of seeing him live),Scorpions ( Holiday)and a few songs from GnR and Deep Purple...that's all ! Couldn't care less about the rest.
Beatles - Ita amaar lagiya ekta topic in itself...no words are enough...lots of favourites...jara sunchoin tara to definitely agree korba, jara suncho naa...ekbaar try koro...Hey Jude,Norwegian wood,Can't buy me love, When I saw her standing there...the list goes on.
ABBA and Boney M- Always close to heart as these two were my first entries into the world of western music at about 6 yrs of age, came as I did, from a typical middle-class bengali family in Silchar, with strong roots in rabindranath-nazrul-bhajans-classical music. I guess all that unintentional homework somehow formulated my taste over the years...Asiti-da dekhsi ABBA lekhsoin..."Chiquitita" was my choto belar favourite...in recent times, I also came to like "Fernando" as Jet Airways plays Sergio Rafael's opera version during take-offs and landings.
Baba also introduced me to the genius of Richard and Karen Carpenter...onek bhalo gaan aase
Are we ever happy with this lonely game we play? Thoughts of meeting dissappear`when its time to say goodbye Does it matter how hard we try? To understand the reason why we're carrying on this way Tried to find the reason but...the words got in the way We're lost in this masquerade
Tokhon oto bujhtaam na...ekhon ektu ektu bujhi...
Pop - Modonna, bhishon bhalo pai...fullstop. No one else and that includes boy bands !
Others- I suggest Sanatana,The Gypsy Kings,Julio Iglesias...each great beyond description...must listen !
Indian - Amar Tamil gaan khoob bhala laage...especially because their poetry is much-much superior to the average Bollywood stuff...plus 90% is omitrakhkhor chhondo, i.e. blank verse...music to bhalau...and Rahman isn't the only one who's good. And yes,Punjab an Rajasthan are good too...especially well-sung Heers.
Ghazals / Thumris beshi naa...ektu ektu...kuno kuno shomoy...most ofthe poetry is good but you tend to like only a few ones...I've seen a lot of ppl suriviving on this only...hardly surprising but not always the right stuff for me..
Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti- khoob ekta shuni naa,in fact CD/tape to ekdomi shuni naa...tobe keu (bhala koriya) gaile bhalau laage majhe majhe...Rabi Thakur has a song for every damn situation and emotion conceiveable. "megher kole rodh hesheche..." was the first full song that I ever learnt to sing along with "Door deshi ek rakhal chele"...and "Prothomo aadi tobo shokti..." prothom harmonium bajaiya gaite sikhsilam...so they are all sentimental favourites with lots of memories attached...I've also had my share of dance dramas like Chitrangada.
Jibon Mukhi Bangla gaan - I get into fights for this. Suman Chatterjee...no-goddamn-one else...the rest are too simple, too cliched, too tacky, too LS..I wonder how they sell at all and have so many fans...they have the right to...but i feel they shouldn't be allowed...my apologies to all, but I've seen such crap being quoted to great lengths in certain threads out here...i'll be happy when those are deleted beyond retrieval. Anyone is much better off with Manna Dey,Hemanta, Chinmoy, Salil Choudhury and if you are game for Assamese music, Jayanta Hazarika ( the younger brother of Bhupen who should have got 100 times the fame Bhupen has had he not passed away early). I'm also a big fan of Zubeen Garg and have had the privilege of being up close with him quite a few times and also seen him at his recording studio...sheer genius ! A freak of nature ! This guy leads the unruliest of lives, hardly practises and yet composes,writes,plays,sings,mixes...does it all.
I also like an assortment of what we collectively call "Kirton". Most people get bored when I talk about this so I hardly do. But the music is phenomenal if you listen properly and are lucky enough to come across the really attractive types. There is a veritable sea of choices so one would definitely find a few types that hold appeal.I am familiar with quite a few genres that probably don't exist in too many places...would definitely learn more about them...this process in ongoing for me...I'm not much into religion, but kirton I'm definitely hooked to...not the Hare Krishna oshtoprohor stuff set to hindi film tunes that rob your sleep and peace...listen to thaat, choutaal, baul kirton, ojhar gaan from Poddopuran...rocks ! or should I say kirtons ???!!!!:D
Hindi gaan- Beshi kichchu lekhtam nai...my memories with many songs are like most of you...those childhood days thru Puja pandal mikes, no cable tv,mp3 or cds and very limited tapes. maybe the occassional " sainik bhaiyon ke liye" on Radio Ceylon and " Network Chitrahaar" and "Rangoli" on TV if I woke up on time on Sundays. The T Series Rs 18 revolution and the irritating Jhankaar Beats...onto student life and hostel days and very very late nights with desks and buckets for percussion...the worst singers sang on stage during my college days...or so I thought...jam sessions in college and much more organized ones towards the beginning of my professional life...i still do indulge myself a bit these days...a few friends come over...I have a guitar (cant play myself) and keyboards ( can play a bit) ready...home cooked food...few hours of bliss !! And each day the type of music varies with the operative mood...the keyboards were a shock gift from my good friend Arunabha Deshmukhya who carted the whole thing along from London after his first trip as a surprise...how many of you have friends like that ??
Yaaa...bhogobaan jaane kotota word type kori laisi...Rupam e koibo abar gona-goni koriyaar :D :D Rupam er lekha ta aami porsi...kintu amar ei lekha jodi sesh porjonto poro taile bhabhiyo tumrar amaar takiyao beshi timepass korar time aase...ami to atleast ghoro rait khawar pore type koriyaar...office o ita kora ba pora ghor paap...as praischitto je gaan guli koilam shuniya dekhtai paaro...

for me rock starts with Chuck Berry's 'Johnny B good' and goes on with Hendrix,Clapton, Led Zeppelin,Van Halen,GNR and others who have what it takes to strum a guitar. Also grunge rock of the nirvana variety interests me with its very powerful abrasiveness.
aar bangla gaan or belaay aami ektu old fashioned. i hate all the 'jibon-mukhi' stuff. imo, there is nothing greater then such classics of hemanta as 'runner' , 'poth harabo bolei ebar pothe nemechi', 'e poth jodi na shesh hoy, tobe kemon hoto tumi boloto' etc. and manna dey's 'aami je jalshaghore' , 'abaar hobe to dekha, e dekha i shesh dekha noy' etc. aamar ekta odbhut taan aase towards Uttam-Suchitra movies and their music which makes those songs just too memorable for me, although i am far from belonging to the time of the uttam-suchitra movies, but they have an appeal which is unique for me in some sense.

I also purchase cassettes seeing how many songs are there in it. You ave to do it some times... ;D practical idea
I consider Jayanta Haazrika..a far more "close to heart" singer. Unfortunately, many many of his songs were confined to Geetimalika program only. It was his widow Promeela [a bengali from Kolkata] who took a step in repriving some of his songs, and those are only available in CDs and Cassettes. Some people say, all of Jayanta's songs contain sadness. Possibly, but I look for the strange melody, twists and turns breaking the predictable aroh/abroh patterns. Some similarites with style of Shyamal Mitra?
Jimut..do you remember Rombha Menoka..by Jayanta?
And ofcourse..I support your observation...had he been alive, he would have gone far past his elder brother. |

Wonderful wonderful rendition of soulful, simple lyrics.

that's more true here in the US, because boney m and ABBA were percieved as gay music.just like a man wearing a pink shirt is seen as odd in US, the same goes for music of Boney M. so most people who don't want to be labeled as such may happen to deny that they liked boney m, but there are people who genuinely don't like them too. in india the situation is very different.there is no shame in wearing a pink shirt and boney m does not identify with a specific sexual preference, although i have to admit the pink shirt thing strangely looks odd to me now, but these things are not an issue there in general.
and yes, i don't like rap music either.sometimes i like the rhythm but i guess its just not for me.the way i see it, its just some trash talk without any real musical quality. i like the other extreme of music though which is heavy metal. its much more rich musicall, imo. not the ones these days like death metal etc. of the slayer variety. i like the old original metal bands like black sabbath, judas priest, def leppard, iron maiden and sometimes metallica. and ofcourse the one who started it all...led zeppelin. there is a thing here in US called Ozzfest that comes to my town every year.its in honour of Ozzy Osbourne, and its just awesome.i would say if you feel the energy in a live heavy metal show, you are hooked for life. |

Stan...this post is for you.....though hard rock n pop makes the backbone of western songs, but unfortunately, i'm not able to get much entertainment out of those....i love soft numbers.... My favorite group is 'Westlife' n some of my liked tracks are:
1) Fragile heart. 2) I'ud die for you. 2) Seasons in the sun. 3) My love. My all time favorite song is the one sang by Marc Anthony.. "You sang to me" One more is from the movie, "The Ghost", don't remember the singer exactly....
I like some numbers by Ronan Keating....
more to come...... |

hi man well i can understand why u dont like rock.i guess u just started to listen english music.know what when i started i listened to pop only at that time i had no idea what is rock rap pop ore so on.. but one thing is for sure once u start listening to rock man u wont be able to hear pop at all. and i bet u yourself will say that pop sucks.. i am sure you never heard any good rock music in sil and thats the reason u dont like rock number.. well even i like slow and soft song like nothing else matters by metallica, "stairway to heaven" bye led zepplin(thats my all time fav slow song) and many more... but i always prefer rap to rock only if it is by eminem or 2pac.. after all 2pac is considered as the greatest rappers and by the time eminem stop singing he will earn even more fame then 2pac....... |

It's a real fundooo topic to discuss...Hat's off to Mrinmoy for starting it and to Rupam,Jimut and everyone else who have contributed in this thread.
I don't know which songs to mention and which not to...Jimut & Rupam posess such wonderful taste that this posting may fade in mere oblivion in respect to them...there is hardly anything they have left...still giving it a try...as far as memory serves me...
Well, when growing up in far-flung places of Arunachal Pradesh and studying in Central Schools...first favourite was Neil Diamond and Phil Collins and their songs were the ones one could easily relate to...
Jotting down some favourites:-(artistes first)
Neil Diamond-My fast favourite...really liked his coarse voice and the lyrics. Some numbers I always listen to: ----Sleep with me tonight ----You make it feel like Christmas ----I was living my life in a primitive way
Phil Collins-The lyrics were too touching... ----Another day in Paradise ----I wish it would rain down ----Do you remember...(just unbelieveable lyrics) ----That's just the way it is ----All of my life
Sir Cliff Richards ----The minute you were gone ----Can't take the hurt anymore ----When two worlds drift apart ----I could easily fall in love with you
Sir Elton John ----Can you feel the love tonight ----Sorry seems to be the hardest word, and of course ----sacrifice
George Harrison...didn't hear too many of him but one number made a lasting impact...only heard it 4/5 times but couldn't get out of it... ----When my guitar silently weeps
Then comes Michael Bolton...just love him ----Said I loved you...but I lied ----Tell me how am I supposed to live without you ----When I'm back on my feets again ----Georgia ----Missing you now ----Let there be love ----When there are no words ----Whenever I remember loving you
Bryan Adams ----Please forgive me ----Back to you ----I'm ready ----Summer of 69' ----Run to you
Now let me come to a few Bands
The first name comes to the mind is Scorpions... ---Still loving you ----Holiday ----Winds of change ----Love is blind ----Send me an angel
Eagles ----Love will keep us alive ----In the city ----I can't tell you why ----Hotel California
Boyzone...they are my current favourites... ----No matter what ----Picture of you ----Baby can I hold you there ----Words ----I love the way you love me ----When you say nothing at all ----You needed me
Hindi & Bangla on the next post...

Scorpions are the best...TO ME... though GNR would come close...
Dire Straits...The Man Is Too Strong...eii gan ta amaar oionnotomo shera laage...sultans of swing is good...aww...what a band...you can not but just love them.
Michael Matther...popularly known as eminem...would definitely get a thumbs down from me...dont piuck up a fight...it is only me.
darren hayes and daniel jones asil nii dui mokkel err nam jaara savage garden naam e gaita...they probably parted...I did like their Affirmation song...though I liked darren hays's solo ...my love for you is insatiable (in-sha-zable...that is how he pronounces it...or thereabouts). regards Rupam. |
