Mone Rakhar Moto Foreign Cinema

Hi all,
Continuing on the Mone Rakhar Moto Series, why not talk abt films made outside the subcontinent.
I had seen a film "No Man's Land" which had been nominated for Oscar in the same year as Lagaan. When Lagaan dint get the Oscar, I thought I shud see the film which beat it to the award. And what a film it turned out to be. I do not have words to describe the film. NML was in a class of it's own and I actually ended up buying the CD of the film. Prob. have seen it more than 10 times. |

I remember seeing a movie a number of times...BLOOD SPORT..starring Jean Claude Van Damme, Bolo Young.
That is a martial arts movie, and very well made one with entertaining actions. |

Mentioning Foreign movies, a few must see movies are:
Children Of Heaven - Its an Iranian movie abt a brother and sister who share the same pair of shoes to school. Their struggle of life as they hide this fact from their parents. Its a wonder how this simple topic got woven into a splendid film which keeps you glued to the screen.
Life is Beautiful - A Roberto Benigni Film , which is a story of a Jewish man who saves his son's life with his humor and wit in a Nazi camp during world war II .
Bicycle Thief - Its an Italian film depicting the story of a man and his son's search for his stolen bicycle. Very well built film.
Chocolat - Its a very nice French movie which depicts the fact how a lady's chocolate shop in a small French village changes the outlook of the people livining in that village. Starring Juliette Binoche. |

the fact of male nudity has been very funnily portrayed in "Full Monty".... For som reason I thought peoeple were discussing non English/Hindi movies here :) Hollywood and UK films have become sowewhat mainstream these days....but its surprising that besides these movies there are so many wonderful "foreign" movies worth watching.....
Another one which I just remembered is Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" (the sholay original)..... |

My Views :
1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Forrest Gump Tom Hanks is just awesome in these 2 movies...everything about these two - story, cinematography, music, direction, costumes, special effects - are out of this world. Don't just see these movies, but the VCD/DVD if possible...I did !! :)
3. Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade : The reason I include this is simple. "Sholay" I've seen about 30+ times...this one I've seen 45+ times so far. Sober bhala naao lagte paare, still...
4. Tarzan of the Apes ( The Johnny Wiesmuller one ) 5. Sound of Music 6. Born Free, Living Free & Forever Free These were some of the first ever English movies I saw...thanks to my father...

Some of my favorites:
My Fair Lady - Professor Henry Higgins and Elisa Dolittle are splendid :) Gone With the Wind The Rain Man - Dustin Hoffman is incredible in this. The Shawshank Redemption
Indiana Jones movies are fun to watch too... I also like the movies mentioned by Cinema Premi very much.
On a lighter note, I like all Marx Brothers[(Groucho, Chico,Harpo,Zeppo) Marx] movies . Of them I like Groucho Marx the most, for his powerful witty remarks...There are a series of movies featuring all of the Marx brothers which are worth watching for some good humor. Of all I like 'A Night in Casablanca" the most.
This title reminds me of another of my favorite movies - "Casablanca" - a classic love story of all times *ing Ingrid Bergman
Of the more recent movies some worth watching are: Lost in Translation Matrix Monalisa Smile The Others
I also like to watch animated films a lot.....Some of my favorites are: Lion King Finding Nemo Shark Tale Shrek |

Again after a long time....but more important is to keep in touch.....anyways...right into the topic....
Starting with horror movies...in ascending order...
"zeepers Creepers" "Exorcist" "Evil dead-part 1" "Silver bullet"
The best action hero in hollywood, according to me, is "Jean Claude Vann Damm"....a long list of his movies:
"Blood sport" "Inferno" "The Hell" "Hard Target" "The replicant" n much more....
Silverstar Stallone is also a great action hero...but, to me, his best movie was a little different from his contemporary movies...it was...
"AVENGING ANGELO"...more of a love story then action... Among the all other action star...Kurt Russel is the one whom i like to watch...

Saw Troy. Brad Pitt looked stunning as Achilles. Ocean's Twelve was not half as good as Ocean's Eleven. Hmm...Why do they make disastrous sequels?
And I saw BLACK. Why I am mentioning it here? Good question! Because it is not an Indian fillm. It is basically a global film incidentally made in India. I dont have words to describe the film. Great is cliche. It is probably the best film ever made in the Bombay Tinsel Town. Mind it, the BEST. Why? If u have seen it, u wont be asking. If u haven't seen, go and find out for urself. |

One of the best film i have ever seen couple of yers back isBOGUS
Here is the strory for you all:
Seven year-old Albert (HALEY JOEL OSMENT) was raised in a shiny world of sequins and showgirls, surrounded by the magic and fantasy of Las Vegas. But when his single mother is suddenly killed in a car accident, Albert is sent from Vegas to live with his mother's childhood best friend whom he never knew existed, Harriet Franklin (WHOOPI GOLDBERG), in the decidedly not fantastic and not magical city of Newark, New Jersey.
As if raising a newfound "son" isn't trying enough for the fiercely independent Harriet, Albert has brought along a friend -- an imaginary one that no one else can see -- a stupendous, gentle giant of a Frenchman named Bogus (GERARD DEPARDIEU).
As Albert and Harriet struggle to get used to each other, Harriet's world of reality is brought face-to-face with Albert's world of imagination. While she grapples with sharing her one-person existence with this strange little boy who seems to talk to himself, Albert begins to rely more and more on his fantasy episodes, hoping to keep hold of the place he once called home.
Acting as part teacher, part playmate and part guardian angel, Bogus leads Albert -- and eventually Harriet -- through an enlightening experience of imagination and trust. Harriet ultimately discovers how to feel like a kid again (or maybe for the first time), and Albert grows to learn that there's more to love, friendship and magic than meets the eye. |

Schindler's List is one of the movies that I liked. It is an award winning film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Liam Neeson (as Oskar Schindler),Ben Kingsley(as Itzhak Stern) and many others. The movie has been made in the backdrop of Second World War and it splendidly depicts the horrors of the war.I have always read about holocaust, about concentration camps etc in a superficial manner but this movie portrays in a detailed manner how Hitler and his Nazi force commited atrocities on the Jews.Oskar Schindler who was a war profiteer gets moved by the pains inflicted on the jews and a philanthropist Oskar Schindler replaces the selfish Oskar Schindler and this transformation results in the survival of the Jews :D. Credit goes to Spielberg for recreating the war moments in celluloid. |

I Love you Rosa: Its an Israeli movie with English subtitles. A Must see.
A Walk in the Clouds (was this the name!!!): Another really mushy mushy movie. Keanu Reeves was quite good.
Commando: The eternal action movie.
In the last 10 odd years, Titanic, Braveheart, and Schindler's List caught the eye. |
