March on India
«on: 03/02/03 at 04:14:30 »

I remember still today, vivid scenes from an evening a few years back....................March 9, 1996...bangalore ...India versus pakistan...WC 1996...probably I have never been witness in my lifetime to a milieu filled with more tensions than that...and when India eventually had won that game, the next day I went out with the few bucks that I used to get for pocketmoney, to buy all the major newspapers of the day...
When I had managed to collect all the newspapers that used to reach Silchar then, the first thing I did was to go through the headlines in all of them...whenever India won a big match, it gave me immense pleasure to read about it the next day on whatever newapspers I caould lay my hands on...considering the hype and tension that was created around that quarterfinal, all the newspapers tried to make their headlines as jazzy as possible...and some of them managed to do it as well...
however, the one headline that I still remember, was the one that appeared on the asian age..the front page had a big picture of jadeja with several articles...and the headline was crisp and straight...it simply said 'VICTORY' in black and bold and in the same  fontsize as the banner of the paper itself...that one word had said it all and according to me it conveyed to the entire nation the message that the country had been waiting for...victory...more than moving into the semifinals, it was about beating the arch rivals...and probably more than that it was probably about forcing pakistan, the then cup holders out of the tourney emptyhanded.

this time around the tension was not that palpable...although an undercurrent of it was always running...but the intensity was of much lesser magnitude when one compares it to 1996...one reason might be that India already had one foot through the door to the semifinals even before the match started...and everyone just wanted to see the exit of pakistan...vicarious pleasure indeed...but thats the way we are as a nation...and thats the way we will be when it boils down to issues regarding pakistan...even if it means nijer nak katiya porer jatra bhongo kora...

despite the inhuman schedule that I have to keep to, I have been intently following all the WC related messages in the notice board...and tonight I felt that the win was incentive enough for me to shun muh laziness for a while and write something...just for the heck of writing it...nothing else...no expert comments...

two defining moments for India so far in the tournament as I feel are...Sachin's wonderful pull off Caddick for a six over mid wicket in the england match...and the coming to age of the Indian trio of Nehra, Zaheer Khan and Javagal Sreenath in the same match...if one is looking for a turning point for India in this tournament, it has to be the england match...not the pakistan India match...

Sachin's pull was absolutely breathtaking...and I probably have not seen a better six in my entire life...it reassociated Sachin with that savageness that India so desperately  requires of him...and probably that six had enthused in the entire team the two magic words...killer instinct...which often is the only difference between a good team and an average one...

The other aspect of course is the transition from medium fast to lightning fast bowling...
true...its not only the pace that gets you wickets...but equally true is the fact that pace indeed associates with you an image of aggression...and of brutality...really heartening to see that the Indian fast bowlers are now being talked about...possibly the best revelation for India in this world cup is the changing face of its pacers...medium fast is still considered to be the girlie thing...real fast has an element of masculinity associated with it...and that is what gives India an edge in this tourney.

The war has again been won...thanks to Sachin...more for his aggression and must win attitude than for his 98. The kind of aggression that pakistan was known for...now reflects in the Indian side...a must win frame of mind within the permissible limits of professonalism...probably we are seeing a transformation of the Indian mindset...bold statement, agreed...but not a very long shot either...
accolades to kaif and yuvraj...even the juniors in the team are coming to terms with the demands of modern day sport...cruel yet composed temperament...
and ofcourse the ROCK in Dravid has seldom failed us in recent past...

one perceptable change I noticed between now and 1996...back then we would always keep our fingers crossed...with our hearts in our mouth before a match with pakistan...this time around...as I watched the match with my batchmates, I seldom could see that syndrome...everyone was positive right from the word go...even before the Indian innings started that India was going to romp home and in style...this really is amazing...considering that a country which has lost out so many times in the past on big occassions...such sense of confidence is really a harbinger of change in the entire psyche of the middleclass...do not know about the other classes...but I believe a few here would agree with me on that...

all these big words can go haywire in the next few matches...but as of now I believe they stand as they are...and if we can continue in the same vein, we will win the cup...

however, half way through...miles to go before the nation can sleep...one or two points...inclusion of kumble does not go down well with me...particularly in place of singh...the idea that kumble's past records should gain him a place against pakistan has proved its irretionality beyond a shade of doubt...so kumble remains an issue...
the other issue is that of where gangulee should bat...am no expert on that...but this seems to be a pot boiler in the Indian dressing room as of now...

pakistan's departure...or atleast India's attemppts towards that...and the associated events were really commendable...kudos to the team ...

and for the pakis...time time kii bat haain pyare...kabhi tuu ragda kabhi maain ragda...
up yours, bastards.

"High On AdReNaLiNE"
India's opening batsmen lit into the Pakistani pacemen with such ferocity that it begged for a UN intervention. Fifty cascaded of just five overs as Tendulkar and Sehwag smashed them around the park. Shoaib retired after just one over after conceding 18. Each time he came back for another fling, the Indians creamed him.

A I heard the commentry on radio...poor fella he does not have a tv... ??? one thing flashed in my mind...

There was thing drama "Jothesta" which bcame a craze in Silchar with Imbosa in the lead role. some years ago ;D ;D

So imbosa fails in all subjects and asks his sir why he fails...'mastor ... pass korai deo'  > there in course of his justification he asks the hapless mastor  :o ...eai rawalpindi ekhan babar pindi na khurar pindi ami bujhchey na to...kichu lekchey na....
Frankly speaking the mastor did not have an answer and neither did I ;D ;D ;D ;D
Somehow I found the answer...on Saturday...eta Shoaib Akhtar  er pindi...wish Imbosa were there..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

That was not Sachin and Sehwag---Shib ar Shoni e millia Alla re sesh poaoi diche....Jai Shiv Shankar ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
