Mahalaya,Morning walk and Sodor ghater bridge

Today is mahalaya.I came to know about it only yesterday. But I couldn't manage to hear the chandi path by Birendra Kishore Bhadra. But the memories of the day is still very fresh in my mind. I can remember the days when I was in school we used to woke up very early in the morning and after hearing a bit of the Mahalaya we used to go out for an walk.Though I am always a late riser but on that day from 3 am I used to be awake. Its still a mistry for me why on that day people go to the sadar ghat bridge. When I was a kid I used to think that Ma Durga comes from that side so people go their just to see her coming along with her family. The programes of Silchar Doordarshan,Hema Malini's dance drama in DD1, were the other special item o ::)f that day.  Can any one tell me why people go to sadar ghat bridge on that day?

This time Mahalaya is a month well ahead of Durga Puja.
Clueless as to why this happened...though. A nice topic you've rasied here...eeshita. Yes the chanting of Birendra Krishna Bhadra...is probably the very first thing that comes to mind. In a state of half sleep and half consciousness, I used to listen to that enthralling voice, rising and falling, the ambivalence of the pitches, and the tone shifting from one of joy to the other of caution seamlessly.
As regards the enigma of Sadarghat Bridge, well...hehe never really tried to find out except for once. Me never was in this habbit of rising early, and getting early in the morning, and talking a walk was nothing short of improbable to me. But then these friends of mine turned up once at around four in the morning, and started creating 'aukal'...so wasn not left with options...had to accompany them...but I liked it.  We sat on the railings of the Bridge, as did so many others, old and young alike.
We continued with our ornithology  ;),as usual, even on that Mahalaya day, unlike so many others. Actually habbits(especially good ones like the one I just mentioned  ;D ;D ;D) die hard. I also saw people actually crossing the bridge and going towards rongpur, dont know why they were headed there though.
Lots of people were on to the streets. And the atmos was really superb. People tlking, some guys dancing, kids holding on to baloons, smoke emanating from the small teashops, a little breeeze...everything added up to make a wonderful morning.
I never had the penchant for waking early up for a stroll in Mahalaya, but the only time I did, I really found it great.

So sweet were the days...we used to raise questions ...and some of the explanations we used to make ourselves only...Now the explanations seems to be very funny but still so sweet...
I remember one of the days of Mahalaya in my childhood.. still fresh in my mind ..., Its early in the morning...aadho aadho ghum, aadho aadho jaga....When Didi used to wake me up.."see etto sakal hoye gelo.. and you are still sleeping...you are going to miss MAHALAYA.... 4.30am eyes are half closed and half open, Didi led us to wash my eyes, chokhe jal debar par chok ki jalto...takhan mone hoto didi ra ki monstrous.. paka Verandah upar bastam..baste baste ghumiye partam ... maa lal cha banaten with aada, sange golmarich.. jhal.. jhal.. misti..misti..half cup cha..Didi Dhupkathi jalato....and in the mean time dada was trying hard to fine tune the channel in the radio. And then Gam gam  galai radio-te mahalaya suru hoto...Barir samne shefali fuler gaach chilo.. ki sundar gandha... and the most valuable and unforgettable gift in the morning ...
"Sarodiyo Anandomela"   khotai gelo.. sei misti din... :(

One of the most attractive things I found at that time was to meet all my friends at an odd time... and it was great fun to greet them all .. for a happy puja.... also the day used to be special because the 'phujar bondho' used to start from that day. ;D

Kintu sadar ghat thakia ghuria aite aite sokaal hoi jaito aar tokhon khub bore lagto. Kene... jani na. May be somethings are better unexplained.....

while walking through the sadarghat bridge ,the most most specious thing which i do remember is the syllety typical gali i.e " hetamaranir bhai" = 'khankir bhai" of calcutta.this should be the real approach of us to recognise ourselves .
