Liberate Cable TV from the Cable Operator

India is a liberal sovereign democracy and advocates the freedom of speech and expression as a fundamental right. Consequently, as I understand, if I have the right to speak and express whatever I like I also have the right to receive others speeches and expressions so long as they are within the ambit of the law of the land.

The arrival of the cable TV has been hailed as a success for Indian media and economy on the large. However, the medieval fashion in which cable TV services are made available to people even in this age of IT, is really woeful and requires careful and prudent thought to usher in reform and advancement.

For example, if STAR Movies broadcasts a movie, and Indian Broadcasting Laws and sensibilities are conformed to I have every right to view the movie on that channel. Unfortunately, with the current setup, the cable operator decides what are the channels I get to see. Cable Service Provider licenses are issued on a city/town basis, so far as I know. These service providers in turn select sub-providers. In metros this may be several layers deep.

The deeper we go down the node, the smaller is the operator both in terms of resources and also coverage area. So at some level down the tree (jungle), the supposedly less viewed channels get filtered out, mainly on regional and linguistic considerations. So even though my TV allows me to theoretically view 250 channels, I cannot do so as my beloved cable operator sends me a dosage of 80 channels selected on his whims and fancies. What happens to the others is not his concern and the lone viewer who would have loved to watch an off-beat channel would have to suffer. My fundamental right is being thus infringed upon thus. And this is happenings with all the Indian citizens who pay monthly cable subscriptions to watch someone else's choice.

Why should I pay for something I don't want to see, and not get to see what I would love to pay for? It beats me how ignorant are we about our fundamental rights. The cable operator is making money by selling a typewriter at the price of a laptop. Another classic instance of the middleman running away with the booty.

Time has come, for us to realize that Set Top Boxes should be made the rule rather than the exception. If Chennai can do it, without moving the cable operators out of business and reducing the number of cable operators everyone of us needs to embrace STB technology. Let us liberate cable TV from the clutches of the operators and reap the fruits of technology while enjoying our fundamental right to speech and expression

Its already liberated. Buy a DTH set and pay for what you want to watch. In fact after the fallout with my cable operator, I am also contemplating the same.

Cheers!!!
