Haor or Majhe Siyal Raja....
«on: 06/19/04 at 01:03:32 »

Heard about the gr8 shyleti proverb....."Haor or majhe siyal Raja".....What is an Haor....? Mohd Shamsul Alam and Md Sazzad Hossain explains. Itao kintu...cut paste....haasio naa....

Haor bowl-shaped large tectonic depression. It receives surface runoff water by rivers and khals, and consequently, a haor becomes very extensive water body in the monsoon and dries up mostly in the post-monsoon period. In Bangladesh haors are found mainly in greater Sylhet and greater Mymensingh regions. During monsoon a haor is a vast stretch of turbulent water. The word haor is a corrupt form of the Sanskrit word Sagar (sea). In Sylhet and northeast Mymensingh, the people pronounce the Bangla letter ৸স৹ (sa) as ৸হ৹ (ha), and some times ৸গ৹ (ga) as ৸হ৹ (ha). Thus sagar is sounded haor.

The haors are of tectonic origin and possibly connected with the rise of madhupur tract. beels do not subside but haor basins do. In its original form, the haor basin comprising the floodplains of the meghna tributaries would have consisted of a rich mosaic of permanent and seasonal lakes and ponds with abundant aquatic vegetation. But through gradual sedimentation, the basin becomes shallower leading to the formation of reeds and sedges. This resulted in providing enough food and shelter for fish and other aquatic, fauna and attracted the migratory birds which, in their turn, added to the fertility of the waterbodies by their excreta promoting rich growth of phytoplankton and macrophytes thus partly contributing to the process of eutrophication.

The haor basin is bounded by the hill ranges of Meghalaya (India) on the north, the hills of Tripura and Mizoram (India) on the south, and the highlands of Manipur (India) on the east. The basin includes about 47 major haors and some 6,300 beels of varying size, out of which about 3,500 are permanent and 2,800 are seasonal. Numerous rivers rising in the hills of India provide an abundant supply of water to the plains and cause extensive flooding during the monsoon upto a depth of 6m. Small permanent water bodies within the haors are called beels, which occupy the lowest part of the depressions. During the dry season, most of the water drains out leaving one or more shallow beels which become mostly overgrown with aquatic vegetation or completely dry out by the end of dry season exposing rich alluvial soils extensively cultivated for rice.

The surma and kushiyara in association with other minor hilly streams like manu, khowai, Jadhukata, piyain, Mogra and Mahadao form the dense drainage network of the haors. The rivers are primarily responsible for providing inputs - rainwater and sediment load to the plains including haors. The plains remain flooded for about 7 to 8 months. During the rainy season, the haors turn into a vast inland sea within which the villages appear as islands. Occasional high winds during July to September generate large waves in the haor, which may cause considerable damage to homesteads.

The entire Sunamganj district, major portion of Habiganj district, some parts of Sylhet Sadar upazila and Maulvi Bazar district are covered by many haors. In greater Sylhet the most prominent haors are Saneer haor, Hail haor, Hakaluki haor, Dekar haor, Maker haor, Chayer haor, tanguar haor, and Kawadighi haor.

The haors are considered the most productive wetland resources of Bangladesh. The basin supports a large variety of wetland bio-diversity and works as natural reservoir as it plays a key role in basin water resources by regulating water flows of the Meghna river system. Also, the haors are noted sanctuaries of both permanent and migratory birds. With the recession of floodwater, a large variety of small fishes, oysters, water snails and bivalves, and pasture spread over the surface attracting a large number of migratory birds. These birds use the haor as temporary resting and roosting ground before moving elsewhere. The swamp forests, which were once dominant with the flood tolerant tree species like hijal (Barringtonia acutangula) and Koroch (Pongamia pinnata), have been reduced to a few small patches. The haors are also important fishing grounds of the country. In the past century or so, when the population pressure was less, most of the rim-lands of the haors remained as cultivable wasteland and was used for extensive grazing in the dry season. As population increased, boro cultivation expanded onto these marginal lands leading to a large area being drained. Thus, the very existences of these wetlands are now threatened. [Mohd Shamsul Alam and Md Sazzad Hossain]

Guys try this out............

1. Open a new file in Excel 2000.
2. Select File and Save As, and in the Save As Type menu, select Web Page.

3. Click the Selection:Sheet radio button, and checkmark Add Interactivity.

4. Click Publish. In the Publish As dialog box, click Publish again.

5. Switch over to Internet Explorer (IE). Open the HTML page you've just saved in Excel. You'll see an Excel worksheet in the middle of the IE page.

6. Press the Page Down key until you get to row 2000, then tab over to column WC.

7. Hold down Shift-Ctrl-Alt while you click the Office logo at the upper left.

8. Now, you're dropped into a full-screen game similar to Spy Hunter, called Dev Hunter. Use the arrow keys to drive. You'll see developers' names painted on the road as you go.

9. If you're an aggressive driver, hit the spacebar to fire and the letter O to drop oil slicks. When it gets dark, use H to turn on your headlights.

Shah Jalal of Sylhet....a factfile
«on: 08/05/04 at 06:10:54 »

Shah Jalal is one of the most revered legendary Islamic heroes of Bangladesh and one of the key founding fathers of Islam in the country. He was a great saint and a great warrior. He, along with his disciples, had unique contribution in liberating the people of Sylhet region both from the racial rule of the Hindu kings and the prejudices of paganism.

His full full name is Sheikh-ul Mashaek Mokhdum Sheikh Shah Jalal Mozorrodh Bin Muhammed. Although historians are divided on the issue of his birth-palce, the majority of them thinks that he was born in 1271 in Konya, Turky.

Shah Jalal's father was contemporary to Mawlana Jalal Uddin Rumi. Rumi's mazaar is also situated in Shah Jalal's birthplace, Konya in Turky. His ancestors came from Yemen, hence he is also called the Mozorrodh-e-Yemeni. Shah Jalal was raised by his maternal uncle, Syed Ahemd Kabir, in Mecca. He became a Hafiz (those who know the Holy Koran by heart) and also became proficient in Islamic theology. Legend has it that one day his uncle gave him a handful of earth and ask him to go to Hindustan with the instruction that whichever place in Hindustan matches this earth completely in smell and color, he should settle down for preaching and establishing Islam.

Shah Jalal journeyed eastward and reached Hindustan (modern India) in c. 1300. In Ajmir, he met the great Sufi mystic (Dervish/Pir), Kwaja Gharibnawaz Moinuddin Hasan Chisty. He also met with Nizam Uddin Awlia (1236-1325), a prominent Dervish, in Delhi. Nizam Uddin requested him to go to Sylhet to rescue Sheikh Burhan Uddin. The Sheikh was only a handful of Muslims living in the kingdom of a Hindu King, Gaur Gavindha. He secretly slaughtered a cow to perform his son's Akika (christening of child in Muslim culture). It is said that a crow carried a piece of meat and dropped it in the king's yard. The enraged king ordered killing of the Sheikh's son and the Sheikh himself was imprisoned. Sheikh Burhan Uddin's mazaar (shrine) is located in the banks of river Surma in Sylhet town.

Shah Jalal reached Sylhet with 360 Awlias (disciples). Some of the awlias originally followed him from Delhi, and some joined on the way to Sylhet. Knowing that Shah Jalal was advancing toward Sylhet, the king removed all ferry boats from the river Surma. Legend has it that Shah Jalal crossed the river Surma by sitting in a Zainamaaz (prayer rug). Muslim force was defeated by the king twice previously. However, this time the king ran away after being deafeated by the force led by Shah Jalal after a fierce battle. Shah Jalal also found a match of the earth his uncle once gave him. He settled down in a placed called Drag Mahallah, near Choukidhiki. He preached Islam from there. He and his disciples also travelled as far as Mymensingh and Dhaka.

In his book "Afdalul Hawaade", poet Hazrat Amir Khosru gave exact dates of Shah Jalal's travel to Sylhet. Khosru was a Moghul court poet, and considered the founder of Urdu language. Persian traveller, Ibn Batuta, also came to Sylhet to meet Shah Jalal.

The exact date of his death is unknown. According to Ibn Batuta, it was 1347. He died at Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Shah Jalal's nephew, Hazrat Shah Paran, lived out of town, in Major Tila area. Legend says that he was of very high temper and would curse people when they are unruly and the curse would come true. To save people from his wrath, Shah Jalal ordered him to settle down just the outskirt of the town.

Thanks Krishanu...very useful, both for the interviewer and interviewee.

The sad story in many cases in our country, specially in academics,  is that., the interviewers try to find out what the other person sitting across the table does not know. Also, the panel members compete with one onother to show how great Einstein he/she is. The victim is the candidate. Ultimate decision and selection?....Ha Ha Ha.......

Dear All,
Kaulka ekta  “Maths trick” pathaicilam Asiti babu-re,  pula-maiya-re shikaibar lagia. Tain ita paria  khub vala paichuin.  Eirakam gnani guni manusher pith chaprani paiya ami sahas paichi. Okhon  sabaire sunailai.

http://www.speed-math.com/
Based on Professor Jakow Trachtenberg's system of simple methods to perform high speed mathematics.

How to multiply  85 X 85   or     58 X 58

This is a  trick  to  find square of  any two digits number  with  digit  “5” in it .

Case 1
When the digit “5” is in  last place like  85,  95, 45,   15  etc.

 Example    85X85

The answer will be four digits figure say    A B C D
 The  digit  C D  will be always  2 5
 To find  digit  A B   multiply the first digit ( here it is 8 ) with  (8+1) i.e. 8*(8+1) = 72
 So the answer is 85 x 85 = 7225.

Example   15 X 15

To find  A B,    here it is  1*(1+1)= 2 (  consider it as 02, here “A” is  zero which is  meaningless )
Since  C D is always  25,   the answer is      15 x 15 = 225

Example    195 X 195

To find  A B :  here it is  19*(19+1)= 19*20=380
Since  C D is always  25  the answer is   195 x 195 = 38025

Case 2)   :
When the digit  “5” is in the first place ie. 51, 54, 58. 59  etc.

Example   51 x 51

Here the last two digits C D will be  square of the last digit ( here it is 1 )  so, 1  to the power 2 = 1.
Since the answer has to be two digits  number, change  1 to  01.(  caution : though “C”  is  Zero, it cannot be ignored )
First two digits  A B will be  (25+last digit)  = (25 + 1) = 26
So the answer is   51x51 = 2601

Example   59 x 59

Here C D  is  square of 9  i.e. 9** 2 = 81.
And  A B  is (25+ last digit) =(25+9)=34
So the answer is  59x59 = 3481

Shankar da nice one..!!!

kintu jadi amra basic jinish ta follow kari..taile other than 5 also we can calculate in few seconds...

(a+b) whole square or (a-b)whole square.

Suppose number is 58..
so make it (60-2)whole square =3600-240+4=3364
to make this calculation faster u can first subtract 240 from 3600 and then add 4.

Suppose the number is 53..
(50+3)whole square = 2500+300+9 =2809

Dear Taar Cheera,
Thank you for your good suggestion.
In my opinion, your method is more suitable for squaring numbers  like  32, 68, 87, 79  where digit 5 is not there. With digit  5,  it becomes very simple  because last  2 digits are always  25 and first two digits are  X*(X+1).  Or  25+X and  X*X.  However if you are more comfortable with your method,  please don’t change it for my sake!  Anyway,  thanks again for your response, and please tell us more such tricks.

This whole number tricks hold good for other multiplication also.
Suppose 48*13.

So, (50-2)*13=650-26=624.

But Asit Da (with respect) do you really feel that we should teach this tricks to our kid? I feel we should give enough space to our kid to show their creativity.

These tricks really work fine in case of competitive exam like CAT and others where time is a matter and at the same time calculator is not allowed.

TC...your point is absolutely correct. These tricks are most useful in competitive exams, and not much useful for school students. The students cannot apply these in their school work or exams because these are not prescribed in their syllabus.

However the tricks have other uses. These tricks can surely boost the morale of the "Mathematically Weak" students. These would provide the psychological advantages.

In Delhi, there are a number of small home run Mental Maths courses which give such tricks to kids at a pretty high cost. It has been reported that many kids who were afraid of maths, have started showing interest in the subject.

Some more tricks..

I. Multiply any two numbers within 20
suppose the numbers are 19*16

Take the larger one ie 19 and then add first digit of the second number ie 6

So, number is 25 now put a '0' at the right most side(ie multiply with 10)
so, number is 250.
Now multiply 9 and 6 ie 54 and add this to 250. it ll be 304..

II. Multiply any two digit number by 11

54 *11
Add the  two digit 5+4=9 ,put this 9 in between 54 ie 594

The only thing tricky to remember is that if the result of the addition is greater than 9, you only put the "ones" digit in the hole and carry the "tens" digit from the addition. For example 11 x 57 ... 5__7 ... 5+7=12 ... put the 2 in the hole and add the 1 from the 12 to the 5 in to get 6 for a result of 627 ... 11 x 57 = 627

III. Multiply any number by 5

Divide thh number by 2 and multiply it by 10

Number is 79, divide by 2 ie 39.5 , now multiply by 10 ie 395

A.Squaring numbers made up of threes

33333*33333

StepI. Total number of 3 = 5
Now first put  four 1's (one fewer than
digits in number) . so 1111
Step II. next digit is 0. so 11110
StepIII. four 8's (same number as 1's). so 111108888
StepIV. now at the end put one 9. So, answer is 1111088889

B.Squaring numbers made up of six

66666666*66666666
StepI. Total number of 6 = 8
StpeII. Put 4's (one less than digits in number) = 4444444
StepIII. Next put 3 =44444443
StepIV. 5's (same number as 4's) =444444435555555
Step V. Put one 6 at the end = 4444444355555556

C.Squaring numbers made up of nine

999*999=998001..

Dear Taar Cheera,

Thanks ,   Wonderful posts,  in proper words  Hulusthul  jomse!!
I have noted down all of them in my diary.
With your permission, I would like to add some more Trachtenberg's  fun   in your  basket.

Case I   Your method  can be extrapolated to find the square of any  number  ( Dr. AKS  this    answers  your question )

          Square of 46

The  rule is 46 X 46 ={ ( the number + last digit )* first
                            digit } *10 + { square of last digit }
                          = { ( 46 + 6 ) *  4 }*10 +  {  6**2 }
                          = {   52  * 4   }*10  +  {   36   }
                          =     {      2080       }   +     {   36   }
So answer is 46 X 46 = 2116

This is applicable for higher numbers  also but doing it mentally is difficult.

  Square of     379

379 ** 2 = {(379+ 9) * 37 }* 10 } +{9**2}
            =  {  388* 37 *10 } +  { 81 }
            =   { 143560  }  + { 81 }
            =   143641

Case II.   Your  method  can be applied for any digit number.
Multiplication by  11  for any number  is summing
             the adjacent numbers

 4267 *11
the last number is 7           so write 7
next number is  7+6 =13     so write 37 and carry over  1
next number is  1+6+2 =9   so write 937 and no carry over
next number is  0+2+4 =6   so write 6937 and  no  carry over
next number is  0+4 =4      so write 46937 this is the answer.

At the end  I fully agree with  you and Dr. AKS that  these tricks are not to confuse school children but to motivate them to see maths as a fun subject. So Taar Cheera please post more fun for all of us.

Mathematicians LOVE prime numbers because just about all of maths is made out of prime numbers. In the same way, scientists LOVE atoms because just about everything we know is made out of atoms. So now we know what prime numbers are, what can we do with them?

The Prime Number Trick:
Using prime numbers, we can amaze our friends with a prime prediction...

Ask your friends to pick any prime number bigger than 5, but they must not tell you what it is.
Square it. (In other words multiply the prime number by itself.)
Add 17
Divide by 12

Without knowing which prime number your friends picked, you can still tell them:

There will be a remainder of 6.

Note: Prime numbers are numbers that can only be divided by themselves or by 1.Don't confuse, 1 is not a prime number.

Is this interesting??

1*1*1 + 2*2*2 = (1 + 2)square
You can check it by working out the left hand side to get 1 + 8 = 9, and the right hand side gives 3square = 9.

But look:     1*1*1 + 2*2*2+ 3*3*3 = (1 + 2 + 3)square. The left hand side gives 1 + 8 + 27 = 36 and the right hand side is just 6square = 36.

The odd bit is that this also works for: 1*1*1 + 2*2*2+ 3*3*3+ 4*4*4 = (1 + 2 + 3 + 4)square because they both come to 100.
In fact if you stick to the pattern, you can make the sum as long as you want. Here is the formula..

1*1*1 + 2*2*2+ 3*3*3+ 4*4*4 +....+ n*n*n= (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + ... + n)square

This ALWAYS works!

Very interesting TC.
Now a puzzle for everyone.....

A king has 1000 bottles of wine and one of them has poison in it, which if anyone drinks , will die after 28 days. He does not know which bottle has the poison and wants to find that out by having his soldiers taste the wine in diff. bottles. Now, how many minimum no of soldiers will the king need in order to find out which bottle has the poison in it ?

I feel ONE soldier is sufficient.
Exp. e.g. the month is February. So if the soldier takes one bottle in the 1st of Feb considering it contains the poison then he'll  die exactly on 1st of March. Simillary for 2nd of Feb he'll die on 2nd of March. Now this way he can verify 28 bottles.
Now on 1st of March, if he dies than first bottle is poisonous and if he survives he can taste the 29th bottle and so on..

Snake puzzle

Imagine a situation.......a snake (say 1 metre long) starts swallowing itself from its tail. As it goes on swallowing, the circle goes on becoming small and finally he reaches to the neck. That is his neck is in his mouth. Question is, where has gone the entire body? Answer may be that the body is in his stomach. But where is stomach?????? only things remained is mouth and neck.

Same problem can be thought in other way also. Say, there are two snakes and each one is swallowing the other's tail. Finally they arrive at neck to neck point, only two mouths remain. Where are their bodies???????

The answer is known to everybody. Since the situation is quite funny, I put it here.  ;D

TC, your answer would be okay given the conditions, but I just notioced that I had earlier forgotten to provide one condition in the question, ie, the king wants to drink the wine exactly after 28 days. In that case your solution won't be right. There would be more than 1 soldier needed. Can you find the min no?

Dear Maha_Addabaj,

You are changing the rules as you are getting the answer ! We were thinking ( one track minded ) that you are offering us drinks. Now you want to identify the poison, you should have defined it clearly at the beginning. Never mind, my solution with one soldier is like this :

Since death comes after 28 days i.e. 28*24*60*60 = 2419200 seconds after consumption ,  I will start at 00:00:00 hours of day one and administer one drop of drink to the soldier every ten seconds from bottle no. 1,2,3,4 etc. So feeding will stop before 3 hours.. After the agonizing waiting  of 2419200 seconds, if the soldier dies then bottle  1 is poison, if he dies 10 seconds later then bottle  2 is poison and so on. So, in worst case the king will identify the poison  after  9980 seconds starting from the end of 28th day. In any case, the king will get  one poison free bottle every 10 seconds, and  I am sure Keshto can’t finish one bottle  in 10 seconds !!
In case you feel that  such  precise moment of demise cannot be ascertained with spilt second accuracy, then I will go for mathematical solution  which will yield more than one soldier, but certainly less than 1000.

Dear Taar Cheera,

You broke my heart !!  Offering  only one bottle to the  King, Keshto and me !!  Ek se hamara kya hoga ?  Why not you mix one drop of  drink each from 500 bottles and feed the soldier. Then after 28 days we will have 500 poison free bottles. Kya Keshto, chalega ? 500 bottle  kabhi dekha eksaath ?  Hehek subah se start karela, daru ka kasam hehek .

Dear TC and shankar-da,
You are really thinking in a single track, ar khali khali amar ufra raag korray.......Ami rego koilam to age ekta condition dite bhuli geslam, tai to abar dilam...
Anyways, as Shankar-da said, determining the bottle with seconds precision would be tough, so obviously one soldier won't be enough....So think of a more logical solution , jaate tumra hokkole 999 ta bottle i paan korar ananda labh korte paro...

You are really thinking in a single track, ar khali khali amar ufra raag korray.......
Dear Maha_Addabaj,

We are not at all angry with you !! ( Track part is OK and true).  We are only trying to match your changing boundary conditions. There is another non mathematical method  with ONE soldier.

Feed the soldier with 1 drop of drink from 1st bottle,  2 drops of drink from 2nd bottle,  3   drops of drink from  3rd  bottle and so on, up to 999. If the soldier drops dead  on 29th day, send the body for post mortem. With the advanced DNA technique and forensic expertise available, it will be possible to find out how much quantity of poison is there in the body, or in other words how many drops of poison has killed the soldier. Now you know the answer !

Though you rejected my “ split second” method, I am confident that you will be “ impressed “ by this  “drop count “ technique. However, I am anxiously waiting for your approval for this “logical solution “,  with my fingers crossed !

Existing theory: Any material which reflects visible light of all wave lengths appeare as white. Any material which absorbs visible light of all wave lengths appeare as black.

My theory: Any material which reflects visible light of all wave lengths appeare as black. Any material which absorbs light of all wave lengths appeare as white.

Experiment: Take two jar having wide mouth (doir bhanr) and fill the 1st one with tar (in liquid form) and the 2nd one with milk. Now peep at the jars. You can see clear image of your face in tar, but no image in milk.

Logic: Virtual image is formed by a surface only when it reflects light. In the present experiment, tar forms imge but milk does not. This shows that tar reflects the light incident on it from the face. but milk does not reflect any light.

Conclusion: tar (black in color) reflects light and milk (white in color) absorbs light. ;)

This poem is dedicated to Keshto.    daru ka kasam !!
CHEERS AND BEERS
TO GOOD FRIENDS

Brian   Engel

TO GRAMMAR AND HIGH SCHOOL AND
COLLEGE WE WENT,
WITHOUT EVER THINKING OF WHAT
IT ALL MEANT

THE DAYS AND NIGHTS SPENT
SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS,
WE NEVER REALLY THOUGHT THAT
THOSE TIMES WOULD END.

WE TALKED ABOUT SCHOOL AND HOW
WE WISHED WE WERE DONE,
BUT NEVER STOPPED TO THINK
THAT WE'D MISS ALL THE FUN.

WAKING UP AT NOON WITH NOTHING TO DO,
SKIPPING A CLASS BECAUSE YOU
WERE OUT UNTIL TWO.

GOING TO THE BARS AND NOT
HAVING TO DRIVE,
GETTING UP THE NEXT MORNING,
BARELY ALIVE.

STARTING DEBATES ON ALL SORTS
OF THINGS, FRAT PARTIES, KEG-STANDS, AND
MEANINGLESS FLINGS.

COMING BACK FROM CLASS AND
TAKING A NAP, GOING TO CLASS IN A BASEBALL CAP.

THESE WERE THE THINGS WE FORGOT
WE WOULD MISS, WE NEVER KNEW LIFE WOULD
TURN OUT LIKE THIS.

NOW IT IS WORK, FIVE (SEVEN) DAYS IN A ROW,
WE DRINK LESS BEER, WE DRINK MORE JOE

WE COME HOME AT NIGHT YEARNING
TO REST, FOR COME THE NEXT WE MUST
BE THINKING OUR BEST.

WE WORRY ABOUT STUPID THINGS
AND WE'RE ALWAYS ON THE RUN,
SINCE WHEN SHOULD A JOB ROB
US OF FUN?

THERE ARE SEVEN DAYS IN A
WEEK, NOT JUST TWO,
SO LET'S STOP ACTING LIKE WE
HAVE SO MUCH TO DO.

EVERY NIGHT SHOULD BE FUN,
EVERY DAY EMBRACED.
LET'S ALL STOP THIS
RIDICULOUS RACE.

"LIFE IS TOO SHORT," WE'VE ALL
HEARD IT SAID.
"THE BEST YEARS HAVE PASSED,"
IS INGRAINED IN OUR HEADS.

JOBS COME AND GO, FRIENDS WILL
ALWAYS BE HERE,
SO GRAB A COUPLE OF OLD ONES
AND GO GET A BEER.

sorry to interrupt you Mr./Ms. Bijili, but what is a "mormantik din" for you may not be so for others...specially, being a Bengali I feel that due to dirty politicians like Nehru and " Jatir Jonok", Netaji didn't get his due  :'( and in my personal opinion Mr. Nehru was neither a good statesman nor a person with good moral and character........I think you might be knowing that in Military hospitals if a person gets admitted with a special kind of STD, it is termed as "Nehru Symptom" !!!  ;D and it a an open secret  ;) (I do agree he was a highly educated fellow)

Please don't take this post personally, as this is intended to share some knowledge regarding our maiden PM with other readers of this thread.

Cheers.  :)

Well Bijli ... I was a great fan of Neheru in my younger days ... Sishurare bhala paita -> hence sishu dobosh, desher prothom prodhan montri -> hence desher bishwokorma, etc ... etc ... etc ...

First things first, Congress jomanai (prak-sadhinota) Zinna Nehrur tulonai onek bhalo leader achla, jemon netrito temoni jonopriyota .. sobdikei taain Neheru re charaiya gechla. Kintu 'ekjon Muslim' congresser prodhan hoi jaita ni ei chintai poriya Neheru aar Gandhi milya plan koriya tokhon Zinna (jar dabi najyo achil totkalin Congresser prodhan howar)-re avoid kora suru korla aar Neheru re Congress-er prodhan banaila.

It was at that point when Zinna started to think that jokhon amari ei obostha, tokhon amar onyo muslim bhai boinera sadhin deshe ei Gandhi-nehrur pallai porle ki obostha hoibo ... porer ghotona sober jana ... desh bhag, etc.

Kajei koi go Bijli, je manush amar desh re bhag korlo samanyo sarther lagiya (karon had Zinna been the Congress pres. then, he would have been the first prime minister of undivided India as well - after sadhinota) aar je manush eto gurutto purno pode thaka sotteo eto communual chinta korto, tare proti amar srodha kila thakto.

Sourav, I agree in essence of your statement that both Gandhi and Nehru had done enough in their life time to earn the wrath of the Indians. But, alas, India being a peculiar country since the time of Alexander, these same guys are treated as national heroes.

But I do not endorse two of your views - 1. On Jinnah becoming the Prime Minister of India and 2. India was the agressor during the Indo-China war of 1962.

If Jinnah had become the PM of undivided India, then the situation would have become much more volatile. Ultimately seperation of India would have become inevitable.

1962 war was the result of China's colonial agression and their demand over the Indian landmass which they claimed to be their own. Indian forces were only defending our homeland and it was the Chinese, who attacked us. The chinese had laid claims on Aksai Chin area of Ladakh and whole of Arunachal Pradesh. They had started the war claiming these territories be returned to them. I don't know from where you got the idea of Indian soldiers starting the war, but be sure that uis a totally wrong perception. And to talk of military superiority, India at that time had a much much stronger air force than China. But due to a spineless Prime Minister, an arrogant and idiotic Defence Minister and an equally idiotic General's faulty planning we lost so many brave men. In fact, India was least prepared for the war, whereas the Chinese were fully prepared. This alone should make you understand who started the war.

I agree with amnesiac on point 1 and agree to Kigoobe's view on point 2. I also read the series of articles referred by kigoobe that appeared in rediff. The articles appeared to be quite authentic with lots of references and logic and quotes. It is wrong to say that India was a agressor in 1962. What India did can not be termed as agression. It can be described perfactly as Kigoobe did, pu...t gutaguti. I dont know what is the exact english for that.

Sonapur dhabas. Now, why do I call 1962 war as an act of aggression from the part of China? Read on and you will find out.

Before going in to the other details, I would first like to clarify on the border issues related to Chinese claim on NEFA and  Aksai Chin regarding which you said 'pu..it guta guti' and also 'Indian soldiers intruded in to Chinese territory'.

The map of India, as we see in India, clearly points out that both these areas fall in to Indian territory. This boundary was
first confirmed by Treaty of Tingmosgang signed between Ladakh and Tibet in 1684. It was reaffirmed by another treaty signed by the representatives of the Dogra rulers of Kashmir, Dalai Lama of Lhasa and the Emperor of China. An agreement signed between Kashmir state and Tibet in the year 1858 acknowledges this. Even the official Chinese maps of 1893, 1917 and 1919 shows the territory exactly as we see in Indian maps today. Another point to be noted is that, these boundaries are generally marked by well defined running water sheds so there cannot be any case unambiguity.

In the the Eastern sector, the territory then known as NEFA was claimed by China as their own. In this part also, the border  between Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet was well defined and natural. It runs east from the eastern extremity of Bhutan to the
Tri-junction of China-India-Burma near the Diphu Pass. In 1913-14 Capt. Bailey had carried out extensive surveyes in the area to determine the line seperating the terrestrial jurisduction of Tibet and Govt. of India in what was then known as North
East Frontier Tract. The border thus determined, was formalised at a tripartite conference by the Govt. of India, Tibet and
China held at Shimla in the year 1913-1914. The boundary line as agreed upon by the parties in the Shimla Conference were
incorporated in map and this map was initialed by the representative of the Chinese Govt. This border line is known as the McMahon line after the name of the Govt. of India's representative at the conference. So, you can see that McMahon Line did not create any new boundaries, it merely formalised and re-confirmed the long standing ethnic, natural and administrative boundaries in the area.

Now lets go into the origin of China-India conflict which culminated in the 1962 war. Peoples Republic of China was
established on 1st October 1949. The period starting from Oct 1949 to Oct 1957 can be termed as China's expansionism under
cover. In the early 1950's signs were visible that China coveted vast territories of other nations including India and other
South and South ast Asian nations. Like any other Communist country, China wanted to expand its sphere of influence. Due to
the present of a strong USSR on North & North-West and Pacific Ocean to the East, the only way through which China could
expand was South. The annexation of Tibet would have been the first essential step in pursuit of that agenda. According to
Chinese thinking it would also ensure the security of its southern and south-western flanks. So, China occupied Tibet in
October 1950. This forcible occupation of Tibet by the Peoples Army added strategic dimensions to the expansionist ambition of the Chinese.

Although China occupied Tibet but road links to Tibet from mainland China was not developed and could not stand the stress and strain of an emergency. For complete subjugation of Tibet and to eliminate the Tibetan resistance completely, Beijing
needed to be connected to Lhasa through a different, better and safer route. A road connecting western Tibet with Sinkiang
was the most plausible alternative. This road could make both Sinkiang and Tibet mutually supporting from a military point of
view. The best route for this road link could only be through the Aksai Chin area of the Ladakh region of India. With that long term perspective in mind, the Chinese started survey work in the area for building the road some time in 1951. The fact that Aksai plateau was totally uninhabited, worked in favour of the Chinese and they could go on without attracting any suspicion from the Govt. of India. The Govt. of India, at that point of time had no idea what so ever that China was building a road within Indian territory.

In the next phase China started a cartographic aggression on India, when some maps published in China showed about 93,240 sq. km of area in NEFA and about 31,080 sq. km in Ladakh to be part of China. When Indian PM Nehru visited China in 1954 and took up the matter with Chou En Lai, the chinese premier sought to treat those maps as of little significance and he also did not
assert any claims based on these maps. During his visit to India in 1956, Chou En-lai repeated assurance to the same effect.

The blunders that the Indian politicians did during the dealings with China actually paved the way for the war in 1962. India
inherited special rights in Tibet from the British Govt. of India. But Indian PM Nehru, who was always far away from ground
reality, signed the Agreement of 1954 with China in which India gave up all her rights on Tibet and formally recognised Tibet
as a province of China. Once this agreement was signed, China had gained from India all it could wish for. Point to be noted,
before this agreement was signed, never did China claim a single inch of Indian land or question the boundaries of India. By
that time the Korean war was also over, China had strengthened its hold over Tibet and its accession of Tibet was legalised
by the 1954 agreement with India. China, therefore, did not feel constrained thereafter to project openly its territorial designs against India.

From 1955 to 1957 there were many instances when Chinese Army intruded in to the Indian territory. On 6th October 1957
Sinkiang-Tibet road was opened which ran through over 160 kms of Indian area in the Aksai Chin. With the completion of this
road and building a network of arterial roads to Tibet and many radial roads towards the frontier of Nepal, Bhutan and India,
Chinese were now in complete control of Tibet. Moreover, they were also occupying a large part of the Aksai plateau, east of
the Sinkiang-Tibet highway.

From 1958 onwards, the Chinese government began to shed the element of duplicity in its dealings with India. It adopted an
openly aggressive and stubborn attitude towards India. It also started occupying Indian territories and began to consolidate
its hold over these territories. The disclosure of China having covertly constructed roads through Indian territory came as a
shock to Indian govt. It is generally believed that Indian govt. did not come to know about this as the Indian forward posts
in this inhospibale and uninhabited terrain were far behind the map marked borders. The area was not even patrolled and no
reconnaissance parties were sent either. There are evidences that this road building activity was brought to the notice of
the Indian govt. earlier also, but the pighead PM and his partner Krishna Menon did not even give it a passing thought. Only
when the Indian ambassador to China informed the Indian Govt. about the road after its completion, did the Govt. take serious
note of this.

Before lodging a formal protest, Indian Govt. wanted to ascertain the exact location of the road and sent two reconnaissance parties, one of ITBP and the other of army personnel. The police party confirmed that the road cut across Indian area, where as the army party did not return as they were arrested by China for intruding in to their territory and subsequently were released. When India lodged a formal protest with China, Chinese govt. simply replied that all the areas through which the road passed belonged to China.

While India was still planning how to react to the construction of road, a chinese official map published in July 1958 showed
entire NEFA except Tirap Frontier Division, large areas of Ladakh, considerable areas of UP and HP and even large parts of
eastern and north-western Bhutan as parts of China.

When India pointed out to China about this, the Chinese said that these were reproduction of maps published before 1949, but they also pointed out that they will not change these maps before re-surveying the borders and taking up the matters with the concerned countries. The Chinese premier, when asked about the committment of honouring the Indian territorial integrity as specified in the 1954 agreement, said that theyhad not raised the boundary questions as the time was not yet ripe for its settlement and the Chinese side had had no time to study the question. Well, one can naturally ask, what then was the purpose of China agreeing to respect India's territorial integrity when it had doubts about the boundary.

Is not it strange, to say the least, for a country to keep its territorial claims against another country undisclosed, profess harmony and friendship, and then at its own convinience advance claims when it thought the time was ripe? What do u
think Sourav?

Along with the cartographic aggression, there were continuous intrusions by the Chinese army in to the Indian territory and
they also occupied a lot of Indian area.

The Khampa rebellion in Tibet spread to the whole of the country (I prefer to call Tibet a country, whatever those stooges decided in 1954 as representatives of India, not withstanding). There were full scale armed clashes between the Chinese and pro-Dalai Lama Tibetan freedom fighters. China hatched a conspiracy to kidnap the Dalai Lama and crush the rebellion. But Dalai Lama escaped to India on 17th March 1959. After he reached India on 31st March 1959, he was given political asylum much to the anger of the Chinese.

The Tibetan revolt and India showing open sympathy to the cause of Tibetans, acted as a catalyst to further deteriorate
Sino-Indian relations which had already shown cracks due continuous Chinese encroachments in to Indian territory.

China then adopted an openly hostile and aggressive attitude against India. It aligned with Pakistan and demanded the right
of self determination in Kashmir while rejecting the same in Tibet. It started giving training, arms and ammunitions to Mizo
and Naga extremists. At the same time, chinese authorities in Tibet began to subject Indian nationals including officials and
traders to various forms of harassment. Simultaneously, the frequency and intensity of incursions into, and hostile
activities inside Indian territories, were also increased. There were frequent violations of Indian air space and the Chinese
army continuously intruded into Indian territory. In many cases, they had set up bases well within Indian border. They also
arrested and even killed Indian patrol parties and reconnaissance parties. But Nehru till Sept. 1959 had kept all information
regarding the inrusion and brutalities of the Chinese from the Parliament and Press. Probably, he was too egoistic to accept
that he had lost it against China and that his (in)famous Panchsheel was merely a piece of scrap. Or may be, he still thought that the border problems with China could be solved amicably through discussions. How wrong he was! I just remembered a saying that nothing called "a Gentleman and a Communist" exists on this earth. Nehru should have kept this in mind while dealing with China.

After some violent incidents in the border, when some of the ITBP personnel and some BSF personnel were brutally murdered by the Chinese army, Indian govt. in the month of october 1959 called upon the army to protect the boundaries with China.

Between 1959 and 1962, before the war broke out, there were continuous attempts at the diplomatic level to settle the
dispute. But, all these efforts proved futile due to an adamant attitude adopted by the Chinese. They were hell bent on
claiming Indian territory as their own. Although they could not counter the volumes of facts and figures produced by India in
support of our claim, but they cooked up illogical arguments as it could (I will tell you, communists are very good, in fact the very best, at it) to counter Indian views.

To be continued .....

Bijili, you are quite right. I agree with you that at least on the death anniversary we should not bad mouth about any person.

Inspite of all his shortcomings, he was instrumental in gving us that wonderful gift, that of freedom of speech. We generally don't understand the value of that. But ask any Chinese, and they will tell what it is worth.

I also agree to your view that we Indians have not understood the true meaning of freedom. This is mainly due to the fact that, with all respect to all the freedom fighters who took part in the satyagraha, we did not earn it. The British, after the WWII were simply not in a position to run the show in India. So they pulled out and India got its independence. Had India been liberated by INA, Indians would have a better understanding of the independence that they earned.

The only person who had the pride of being an Indian in the Nehru cabinet was Sardar Patel. He had beforehand warned Nehru about the impending danger from the rise of PR of China. But Nehru and his partner in crime, for the 1962 debacle, Krishna Menon paid little heed to this. Even when General Kariappa wanted to discuss about strengthening of the Indian defences along the China border, Menon said, "You only worry about the Pakistan and leave China to us." I will discuss about these in greater details in my subsequent post on Chinese aggression on India in 1962 which will deal with events during the war and the persons responsible for the debacle.

My my! Such controversial statements do make good food for thought... I, infact could manage to skip dinner tonight, and yet not feel hungry! Carry on dudes (and dudettes too, just to make the statement away from any gender bias whatsoever).

I guess the Nehru-Gandhi bashing is one of the favourite pastimes of intellectual sylhetis (silchar.com members do top the list), but it is also something that I really abhor. Going back to the termite-infested history books, I just tried to fish out a few facts and fictions.

The first question that does crop up in mind is- Why did partition actually take place? The oldest reason is far more sociological than political, and far more simpler to understand. Till a long time after the British had taken over India, the majority of the Indian nobility (read royals) belonged to the Muslim community, the true inheritor to the Nawabs. Hindus, on the other hand, had to contend being babus, a just progression from being the courtiers to Muslim kings. Thus, associating themselves with the British came more easily to Hindus, who considered them to be another set of kings who are to be served. Muslims, on the other hand, felt dethroned and disempowered.

This may safely conclude the huge majority of Hindus in the British bureaucracy. This, coupled with the Bengali renessaince, and the inherent disagreements between the Hindus and Muslims, there arose a big gap in terms of education as well as other social developments between the Hindus and Muslims. Muslims started to feel threatened under the ever increasing pressure of educated Hindus, and started delineating themselves from the mainstream (read Congress). Thus, the Muslim intelligentsia started advising its fellowmen to stay away from Congress, and at the same time, think of a device that would protect their interests in the state. Thus was born Muslim League, in the year 1906.

Meanwhile, the Bengal partition had already taken place under the pretext that the Bengal province was too large to be controlled by a single administrative setup. The murmurs of 'Divide and Rule' were all hushed up, and swept under the carpets. Muslims, however did not oppose the partition too vehemently, the reason being that this political move made them the majority in East Bengal. The sentiments though, did not change even after that. Feeling too insecure over the Hindu outrage over partition, the Muslims moved the government to get their identity protected. As a result of this, the Viceroy of India (Lord Minto) signed the Simla Deputation (1906) which stated that the Muslims would be treated as a separate electorate, free to choose their own representatives. Coerced further by the governemnt, Muslim League was born, with an aim to maim the serpent called Congress at its infancy.

Jinnah, due to his tremendous foresight, deemed it suitable to join hands with Congress, with the final aim of dethroning the British empire. Priorites soon changed, though. In the year 1919, when the country was disillusioned with the Empire (post Jallianwala Bagh), the Muslims of India started the Khilafat movement, an Indian chapter of a worldwide revolution. The objectives were:

1. To maintain the Turkish Caliphate.
2. To protect the holy places of the Muslims.
3. To maintain the unity of the Ottoman Empire.

Around the same time, the idea of Hijrat started to raise its head. Allegedly supported by Maulana Azad, Hijrat states that if a land is not safe for you, migrate to somewhere else. Some 18,000 Indian Muslims migrated from the North West Frontier province to Afghanistan.

All this was followed by Hindu-Muslim communal clashes, particularly in Multan and Bengal in September 1922. The Sanghattan and Shuddi movements were offshoots of these communal rioting, which were anti-Muslim and aimed at Hindu revivalism.
Besides other events, the arrest of the Ali brothers in September 1921 gave a severe blow to the Khilafat Movement. Gandhi, who was using this movement to accelerate India's advance towards Swaraj, also withdrew his support for the Muslim cause in the aftermath of the Chauri Chaura incident in February 1922. Using the excuse that the national volunteers were responsible for the murder of 21 policemen, thus leading to violence, he called off the whole movement.

In 1924, Turks under Mustafa Kamal were consolidating their position in Turkey. They announced an end to the Khilafat. It was a great blow to Indian Khilafatists who had been campaigning on behalf of Turkey and Khilafat. Gradually the enthusiasm of the people died down and the Khilafat Conference and Committee developed new interests and in a short time nothing but their name remained.

Although the Khilafat Movement failed to achieve its declared objectives, it carried political awakening to large masses of Muslims. It was during the Khilafat days that representatives of Indian Muslims came into contact with eminent personages from other Muslims countries to save the semblance of unity in the world of Islam.

The Khilafat Movement was an asset for the struggle of Pakistan. It made clear to the Indian Muslims to trust neither the British nor the Hindus, but to look to their own strengths for self-preservation.

In the year 1927, Sir John Simon came down to India to make plans for the realization of self-rule in India over the next ten years.

****Guys, think twice before you say that the independence came as a result of the bashing Britain faced at the hands of Hitler during the second world war. The seed was sown far before that, even before the great economic recession.

There were two clear groups among the Indian Muslims. One faction led by Sir Muhammad Shafi, wanted to agree, while Jinnah and his followers were ready to boycott the commission. Meanwhile, the Muslim League session at Delhi in the year 1927, came up with the following proposals:

1. The formation of a separate province of Sindh.
2. Introduction of reforms in the North West Frontier Province and in Baluchistan on the same footing as in other provinces.
3. Unless and until the above proposals were implemented, the Muslims would never surrender the right of their representation through separate electorates. Muslims would be willing to abandon separate electorates in favor of joint electorates with the reservation of seats fixed in proportion to the population of different communities, if the above two proposals were implemented to the full satisfaction of Muslims and also if the following proposals were accepted.
4. Hindu minorities in Sindh, Baluchistan and the North West Frontier Province be accorded the same concessions in the form of reservation of seats over and above the proportion of their population as Muslims would get in Hindu majority provinces.
5. Muslim representation in the Central Legislature would not be less than one-third.
6. In addition to provisions like religious freedom, there was to be a further guarantee in the constitution that on communal matters no bill or resolution would be considered or passed if three-fourth of the members of the community concerned were opposed to it.

After the failure of the Simon Commission (Thanks to Lala Lajpat Rai, Jinnah, and of course Gandhi), the government asked the Congress and the Muslim league to discuss and jointly propose a constitution. The preliminary effort was a failure, the only bone of contention being the minority rights. Nehru, a year letter, submitted a proposal, that among other things proposed one-fourth representation of Muslims in the Parliament, and ten percent representation in provincial legislatures (only in areas that constituted a Muslim population of more than 10 percent). This proposal was damned by Jinnah and the Muslim community, because they felt it upheld the rights and interests of Hindus over Muslims.

Shortly after that, Muslims convened an all-party meeting under the leadership of Jinnah, and proposed some changes to the Nehru report. Further igniting the state of things, Allama Muhammad Iqbal (The author of Saare Jahan Se Achcha) proposed a separate Muslim state (Allahabad, year 1930).

Ektu kaaj kori lai nani... baki history pore lekhmu ne. In a nutshell, it would be unfair to brand Gandhi and Nehru as the only persons responsible for partition.

Nah, kaaj kora gelo na... bhablam galpa ta shesh kori lai.

So, after the Simon Commission report was tabled (an outrageous report, to say the least), Gandhi started his Civil Disobedience movement. The empire saw it as a potential threat, and invited the leaders for a round table conference. Gandhi, for the only time in his life, squandered this opportunity by declaring that he was the only person who has a Pan-Indian view, and thus was the only person eligible to make a statement in this forum. The conferences predictably, brought no result, and Gandhi went on to sign the pact with Lord Irwin, strengthening the cause of non-violent revolution.
The empire, after making a few adjustments to the demands of the Muslims, declared separate electorates for all minorities in all areas, including the untouchables in the northern and central plains, and the Eurpoeans in the east. Quite predictably, this proposition had few takers. Muslims voiced their demand for autonomy of princely states (remember, most of the royals were still Muslims), whereas Hindus wanted the monarchies to be abolished.

The Government of India Act, 1935, promised a Federation of India, granting, among other things, one-third representation for Muslims in the Parliament.

For the first time in history, provincial elections were held in India in 1937, with Congress emerging as clear winners. Contrary to popular expectations, the Congress went on to become a pro-Hindu party, thus inviting further wrath from the then hapless Muslims.

*** It was only here that I started doubting the integrity of Gandhi as a Pan-Indian Leader.

After the outbreak of the World War II, the empire dissolved the Congress ministries, causing much jubiliation (and quite justified jubiliation at that) to Jinnah and his fellow Muslims. And it was from here, that Jinnah started voicing his desire for a separate state that he would call Pakistan. The rest, I guess, is history... quite well known history.

The only point where Gandhi faltered was to resist the temptation of Congress to act as a supreme power during the late 1930's. They saw it as an opportunity to perhaps avenge the Muslim rule of seven hundred years. They went on to ban cow slaughter, resist new mosques being built, obliterate the Muslim Madrassa form of education, influence the judiciary in case of Hindu-Muslim disputes, everything they could do to make life tougher for Muslims. This, predictably enraged the Muslims in general and Jinnah in particular. And Nehru, with his aim to become the ruler of the country, could not resist the proposition, even if that meant an India broken into three parts. Gandhi, with all the power and authority that he mustered, remained a mute spectator.

If only he could act with grace during that period... but I guess, every man falters, only Gandhi did that at a point when it mattered the most.

But, I still feel that we owe our independence to him, I still feel that our independence was well earned and not gifted, I still feel that INA, with a short sighted leader, could never bring independence, I still feel that Gandhi was, is, and will remain the greatest Indian ever born.

*** Think of it dudes, he was the man who introduced the concept of non-violent aggression to the world. He always knew that Indians were not the fighter stuff (We had always lost our ground to invaders). And he had the conviction and vision to make it a success, a plan that was non-existent till then.

So, dudes, start firing... I am right within the point blank range.

Thanks Shankarda for the link on CIA Handbook. I have downloaded both the handbooks, but unfortunately have not got the time to go thru these as I have been mostly out of Ghy these days. That's the reason why I have not been able to post the second part of China war also. Anyway, will be back on Tuesday and will post the 2nd part by wednesday.

Mysteries of the Inner Earth

1. The Imperishable Sacred Land

Theosophy teaches that a series of seven root-races or humanities will develop during the present fourth round of the earth's evolution. The first humanity is said to have appeared in the mid-Paleozoic, about 150 million years ago (according to the theosophical timescale), and we are currently in the fifth. Each lives on its own 'continent', a word referring not only to the main continental area where the evolution of a root-race takes place but also to all the dry land that exists during the life-period a particular root-race. Just as the root-races overlap, so parts of the continents of one root-race become incorporated into the continental system of the next .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Hindu mythology there are many tales of the Nagas, a race of semi-divine serpent-people, who ruled a subterranean kingdom, Patala, filled with incredible wealth. Patala was said to be the lowest of the seven regions of the Indian underworld. These regions are collectively called Bila-svarga, the 'subterranean heaven', which is described as a place of great beauty. The sun and moon cannot be seen there, but the jewels decorating the hoods of the Nagas are said to emit an effulgence that illuminates the entire region of Bila-svarga. Few mortals were ever allowed to enter the lower world, but there were said to be many hidden entrances in the mountains of India and Kashmir . In Tibet there is a major mystical shrine called Patala, which is said to lie above an ancient cavern and tunnel system, extending throughout the Asian continent and possibly beyond. The Nagas are related to the Rakshasas, an underworld race of 'demons', who possess a 'magical stone' or 'third eye' in the middle of the forehead.

Didibhai  you saw this site earlier ? You are interested in ancient Indian history, can you make out what is Patala ? Anything to do with our concept of Swarga  Marta  Patal ? ??? ???
