Hi all...I had posted a message on the initial page of the syhlleti words...but I dont know why it entire message did not get published...may be because there might be a limit on the number of characters on each page...so I am starting a new thread on the same subject...'khati syhlleti words 2'
and me chips in with a few more...things are gettin tough...couldnot recollect more then these...

guddi---kite
usage: guddi uraile age barit gail khaitam >:(
dharanti---before someone flies a kite, a second person holds the kite by its side and above his heads and then leaps a little and throws the kite up while the one holding the 'natai/latai' goes back and puts both his hands down a little in order to ensure that the 'mainja deoa suta' is taut enough. The portion of the work performed by the fellow who throws the kite up is called a 'dharanti'
usage: partner, guddi ta ekta dharanti diyaa deo naa :D
yamma---yamaha. one of the best examples of corrupting a brand name that I have come across. An 'yamaha' becomes an 'yamma'. Also not rare are the cases, where irrespective of whatever motorcycle you buy, you will come across people who will ask you...'kitare ba , tumi dekchi notun ekkkhan yamma kincho' .
usage: yamma loiya gc college o ghur phira koraa ;)
perai/pherai/ferai---its like niggling over petty things or being finicky
usage:dhur bataa...oto perai koris na chain ;D
bhadaimya---I am not sure what this exactkly means. But I had been at the receiving end many a times listening to myself being qualified with this adjective
usage: (jokhuni ami soindhya bela barit thaikya braiya...adda mariya..beshi rait koriyaa barit ailam...pothom sentance...)'o..badhaimya boni gecho ..nani? ' :( ??? :(
plantick---penalty kick. usually these two words are mixed together in a football match.
usage:oi lathh marchos...plantik..plantik! 8)
daktor---a doctor
usage: daktorbabu barit asoinni? ;)
lowa---loosely used to mean an act of purchasing something
usage: grita kobe loilay?
pungta---now that needs no explanation
usage: am sure you use this daily ;) ;)
apungta---a higher degree of pungta ;D
pathaira mat kotha---lateral talks...
usage:someone who talks haywire normally wuld have to come across this 'dhur bata, pathaira matis na'
bonku---wont go into the details. What is 'chinki' to the rest of the country..is 'bonku' to us

Thukku : Mostly uttered during games...If somebody does some mistake in a game , uttering of this word nullifies his/her mistake ..

Pingla : As in "pingla chokh" - Said to someone having cat's eye..
Akta : Suddenly.....As in "Ami tore dekhiya akta dorai gesi "

Rou ( not "rui"), Baaush, Meerga ( not " mirgel"), kusiya ( that snaky fish even your mother will forbid...ami ekbar lukaiya khaisi :)), baashpata ( not "kajori"), kaangla, ufol, ghura-maas ( no relationship with the sea-horse), elong, moka, aair, ghagot, gojaar, moha-shoul, baaing, isa, laaso, laadiya ( as in " hokol maaseu gu khai, aar laadiyar upre dush jai" :))...r mono hor na ekhon...
A few samples of the great Syl-catian slips:

" Tumar paae ki gocha ( thorn) hamiyeche ??"

I'll try and think up some proverbs next time...I think that's where the maximum fun is...I'll start with the first few that come to mind :
1.Ghor-aalar ghor nai, bair-aalar mokmoki ( situation where outsiders rule the roost and the owner gets no importance).
2.Chandor-o ek "do"(the alphabet) ...aar p**dor-o ek "do" ( to compare two extremities)...too bad I cannot add a lot of similar-veined ones here ;)there're several gems involving even Saira Banu which will beat the more popular hindi version involving Noor Jehan any day.
3.Sajite sajite hoila peskunda raja !!!( can there be any better way to describe women everywhere who cannot have enough make-up before going out somewhere ??)BTW, my surname can always be put as Debloshkor....peskunda hoskor ( I don't exactly know what that means, but I've been hearing this since childhood)...degrading couplets involving surnames is of course, a whole new topic altogether :) Just as :" Rupam Das, kate ghurar ghaash, khai ghurar leda-peda, amare daake thakurdada " ;D ;D
4.Kano kochu, choukho tel, ei barit boidyo na gel ( somewhat similar to "an apple a day...")
5.Maa-r kache mama-r barir gof.
6.Saath khondo Ramayan poriya Sita kaar baaf ??
7.Uba tol hoimu,tebo noiya dub ditam nai ( the slogan of the self-esteemed who would rather drown standing upright than dive bending one's own head).
8. Hazaar selam kolki baade ( everything/condition acceptable, except one, e.g. " Naga partner, please aami 1st book"..." Kita ?? Bhuli jaao...hazar selam kolki baade !!")
Anybody remembers those sentences used during kabaddi games...especially those frantic last few words when you're virtually out of breath ?? I'll put down a few...

Tamuk khai...tamuk khai...tamuk khai....(gasp !)
After one of your teammates have been dismissed:

Just to take you down memory lane....I'm sure a lot of you would have played this game...you ask somebody to say a particular word and then you follow it up with a group of rhyming words which would, in most cases,be the heights of insulting anyone those days...I'll not give any examples as I cannot think of a single one that will pass the censors...but does the word " Lenton " ring a bell ?? That was by far the most popular and common one.
How I wish those days could come back...I've really thought of many things today which I almost forgot...hope the same happens to all of you who read this. |

got inspired by the variety of words posted here by others. jimut da as usual was excellent, so also was silchari in the 'fun' er dukaner adda room...whatever he meant when he mailed me saying that he was the non serious side of ...whoever ...whatever...I wont say ;D ;)
and deepanwita,of course was good with her 'godrej' thing. Nice to see ladies posting messages here ;D
Below are enlisted another collection of syhlleti words...a word about these words...not all of them are pure syhlleti words...but they are very much in use among the youths of Silchar...and some of them rather up market ones
Dhaua/Daua---My personal favourite word in this list. Was very happy to have been able to think this word up.
Daua is something like a road accident, you bang your motorcycle into an oncoming car, cycle, bus whatever...and you have done a 'Dhaua'.
ex- janoni, aij to joydeb e daua marshe medical er samne
kil
Panchyati---Derived from the normal word 'Panchayat' as in a gaon panchayat. A meddlesome and officious person, one who pokes his nose into every matter however trifle, is called a panchayet and his actions are termed as panchayeti. As you might have made out by now, it normally comes along with a handful of sarcasm.
Kil---'Kilaiya bhut charai dimu'. A 'kil' is different from a 'ghushi'. And the difference is more pronounced than being subtle. A ghushi is hitting someone with the fingers tightly clamped into a fist. A kil is also hitting someone with the fingers tightly clamped inwards, thus forming a fist. But this is where the similarity ends.
In a ghushi, you hit a person with the bones of your fist or with the portion of the plane formed by the fingers running downwards( a ring in the first three fingers, increases the perilous effect ;)). A kil is different from this in the sense that you hit the person with the side of the fist on the side of your little finger. A kil is normally punched at the back while a ghusi can land on any part of your anatomy. A ghushi can inflict more damages while a kil normally is a little less dangerous.
Katua--- ;D ;D mane koitam na...some things better be left unsaid...or I might be called an RSS guy
Pisla--- I have come across this word in the earlier messages. Still I included it in order to drive home an alternative meaning of it. A pisla(with due regards to a frien of mine whom I am sure a lot of otheres here know ;D ;D ;D) is a person who would ask you for something and would continue troubling you unless you succumebd to his demand.
Sesky---(An alphabet here , an alphabet there, or an erroneous pronounciation of this, can get me kicked outta here ;D ;D ;D). Anyways, 'sesky' is a food item...normally a combination of lots of vegetables and no gravy. Normally you would have it with 'dail and bhat'. Also goes fine with chapati.
Gulli khela--- My childhood love. There aint no game as great as this wonderful game of 'Gulli'. Can write volumes on this lovely game of marbles. Cant do without small tale on this. When I was a kid, I used to play gulli with a friend of mine. Now for playing 'Dipthu(we used to pronounce as dittu gulli) you needed a small hole about an inch in diameter to be dug into the ground. Now we used to play the whole day duriong vacations and just before myu parents returned from office, we used to get hold of two sticks and a rubber ball, and pretend as if we were using that hole to play golf ;D ;D ;D
Akhaistha---Cant say for sure what this means. Can anyone throw some light? My guess though woud be that an akaishtha is a clumsy person.
Aukal---Noise, uproar et al.
Chair choukha--- Obvious. A person weraing prescription glasses eg ...jimut da would be called a chair choukha. ;D ;D ;D
Fazil---A person used to playing pranks always. Have not heard this word being used so much in the urban parts of the valley as in the rural areas.
Merameri---A touch of nostalgia probably for those away from home. It coincides with the 'Poush Sonkranti'. During this, guys make a hovel out of hay and then spend the night therein, cook food, do 'aukal' and then the next morning they burn that. Thats merameri.
so much for now. Another list coming. That I guess would be my final contribution to this. Thanks for reading.

Rupam, you remind me of one more term related to gulli-khela:
binchaash : ... if you say binchaash when playing "turi" (the other popular version rather than "dipthu"), you are allowed to break the "con-join of two marbles". Your opponent(s) can say ("no binchaash") and in that case you are screwed ;D Forgot the exact rules .. I may stand corrected.

Aur rahi baat " Lem" Ki...then why do you forget these ??These phrases had at one time or the other, spread like an epidemic across the length and breadth of our land.
1. Jhariya maar !!!
2. Porbai !! ( or its variants like " Dhoriya bois, porbe nu !!")
3. Jaauk katiya ( this is before our time, maybe 60s,a typical bus-conductor sentence signalling to a reversing driver : jauk kaitya, jauk katiya , jauk, jauk...till bus katiya ekdom nalath !!) ;D
The Godrej-story reminds me of a story, maybe not as good an example of a generic brand name, but a good local adaptation anyway. BTW, I'm surprised how a non-Syhleti like Deepanwita can come up with words like Ferai, Aandu and Bihan..."shongo"-dush I suppose ( pun co-incidental, but intended). ;D
It was probably 1990, and I was stranded at a place called Chorgula near Karimganj in the evening, waiting for a bus, when this unassuming chap walks up and asks,
" O moshir ghoror bhai, koi jaitai ??"
" Kaaligonj "
" O, Bagbarir babu-r barit ni? Te thuda ubain...laastip ( "last trip") eguta Mohendro aar... jaibagi ogutath."
It was not until the mini-bus came that I realized that Mohendro was his version of "Mahindra" !!
I think Rupam alone has compiled a veritable dictionary of shyleti words in the last few days along with handsome contributions from all the others...
To add a few to the "marble khela" topic...it seems both Rupam and Saayan-da have spend quite sometime on that game...I never played that game much but I do still remember most of the rules I think...best of all, this discussion will throw up a lot of long-forgotten terms for all the gulli enthusiasts:
1. Mir, Dol, Tel : 1st , 2nd and 3rd resp. when ascertaining who's going have first strike in either "turi" or "diptu".
2. Not saaf-suf : allows you to create obstacles using grass, stones, etc. to shield your gulli.
3. Daigel : That special marble you don't part with and usually use for hitting...quite like your fav. heavy bowling ball in a game of nine-pins.
4. Uddu : A term that lets you strike standing upright from your your right-knee.
5. Whooz : Make it necessary that you name the person "whooz" gulli you're targetting - very difficult when a lot of players are involved.
6. Batang ! koriya shobdo chai : You have to make a hard hit against your opponents gulli, a feeble sound won't do.
In short, the ultimate challenge before someone attempts hitting you would be " Not Saaf-suf, not uddu, whooz , batang koriya shobdo chai !!!"
You can also reign supreme by declaring before anyone else does, the all negating " Not nothing, not kichchu !!"
And do you remember that you had to utter, " Khai...oi gulli" before each hit to make your attempt legitimate ??
Let me add a few more "baash" varieties after Saayanda's mooli - I have to display my rural-roots, don't I ?? ;)
Bethua - Mrs. Ghosh always insisted on this for our fuldaani-s at Work Experience.
Borua - The tallest and fattest variety.Good to eat too when in the "koril" stage...aah ! koto din khaisi naa.
Pesa - The most popular variety for Merameri as it gives the maximum and loudest cracks while burning.I had the luxury of unlimited "kher" and "baash" at my home in Borkhola so I guess I'll rate myself as a merameri expert. Anyone familiar with the word "ulubura" ?? That's the long bamboo pole with branches covered with kher that you plant in the middle of your meramerir ghor...bhurbela ulubura-th roudh laagleu meramerir ghoro agun lagai ditai...etai niyom !!! :)
Arekta mone hoilo...Bugli : That tubelight like thing you obtain from the core of a banana tree...never liked the taste much though...that's the thing the Assamese get their "khar" from.
Khuwaad : A sort of jail for errant cattle who tresspass into private property for grazing. You have to shell out a fine to get your cows released.
I'll end with something I just remembered...I've recited this on Shonkranti days several times while making an offering to our fields (walking thru' the "aail" ) praying for a good harvest...I think I realize the meaning much better now...

( Bhadaar is shyleti for "bhandaar" or store house implying that in ek-ek kirta ( land measure) you'll get nine storehousefulls of choilta ( or Chalta as the WBites call it)
don't think any other language has such sweet hymns to ensure well-being...
To hell with all the other languages I know...SYHLETI RULES !!!

Jimut's message took me to my childhood days. I can proudly challenge anybody in marbel khela...gatti, deef-to-guli, thuri what ever it may be . How can I forget the Mondi Kheir in Nana bari's utaan. Those from villages may be familier with agoir-bhagoir, though tangal-bengi(danda gulli) was my favourite . Jimut mentions he does not like ..Bugli ( also called Dem) i.e the "core of a banana tree" , but I'm sure if he is given Aati kola-r Dem prepared with hukoin (sutki- dry fish) he just cann't resist.
Some of us must know what Chunga is. Chunga pura was a special occasion in those days for the children (since they can stay nearby , no need to study that time).
Almost all houses in cacher villages has ba-r jaar, and muta-r jaar. Murta is a variety cane family (I wish I could give u the scientific name) . It's very useful for binding 'Khuta's', also aadi, chaati (Same thing as paati ,e,g sitol paati) are made from murta.( igu ekbarey Murta-r lakhan...s/he's so tall like 'murta' ,used to mean tall,thin girl/boy).
In our village there was a old man legendary for his interesting gaaf. Some samples..
...paroo( in Hill ) ekbaar ekta ai boro aair marslaam da-r sedh diya. torey khoi kita , pura mas to baadh dey, khaali lengoor ogu aamra teen joney teen deen khaisi ! (in those days villagers used to go upstream in the jangles to cut bambo)
--eta kita aar kheth. aami ekbaar adha kiyaar piyaaz lagaislaam tuko, kita piyaaz oislo , etar patta diya chair chaali ghor chawa jai ! ( I apologise, I just cann't translate it)
I heard few days ago he died. And we lost a great source of gaaf. I doubt if we can get such category of people in future.
while talking about diff. varieties of fish let me mention some equipments. I don't know their english / calu names:
Bori : I guess everyone could get it's meaning.
Dori : Made up of bambo , usually remains standing on a narrow stream of water.
Chepa: almost same as above.
Peloin: Triangular bambo frame with net in between.
Zimtie : Same as peloin ( but little bigger frame)
Pholo: I've not seen its use.
Jhaki : Requires greate skill for throwing.

Tangal-bengi...what a word !!!Thanks for reminding me of this...I remember many a game I played with as much fervour as any cricket match in any "para"...the last time of course is a bit more vivid...we were playing at 4th hostel in REC with a Liv52 bottle for a bengi and one of my batchmates caused grave damage to his eye in the process. He's ok now and even managed to get married !! :)
Sitol pati, peloin and jhaki were also very very good additions. We also have other varieties like Dekhi-jaal ( seen in a lot of videos where rivers of Bengal are featured), Reg-jaal ( long net tethered to two bamboo poles and pulled by two across the water) and Faash-jaal ( as the name suggests, you literally hang the fish with this net with different sized holes spanning the breadth of the pond/lake and left for several hours). I've had the pleasure of introducing several of my friends to the nuances of maach-dhora and jaal-falani during their visits to my village during Durga Pujas.And yes, "murta' is used to tie stones which act as dead-weights for the faash-jaal left overnight.
As for Chunga pitha, well, that's a classic in itself.You use a specific variety of bamboo,line the inner walls with kola-pata to make it non-sticky, put Biroin-chaal ( or binni dhaner chal as the WBites call it) and water,seal the top tightly with a handful of hay and stick it inside a bonfire. You get warmth on a cold winter night, a hands-on cooking experience and food that goes down well with kheer or maach-bhaja...ah ! heaven !! |

Another list of words that people in the valley use in day to day life.I would like to say, that the words that I have posted here so far, might not be bonafide syhlleti words, for I am clueless as to the etymology of most of them. But these are the words which we everyday listen to and ourselevs use . So I guess they have become very syhlleti, in a syhlleti sort of way.

aga---aga is normally the front end(not the front end in computer parlance) of something, as in a baser aga
amita bachchan---thats amitabh bachchan. have heard the superstar being called amita bachchan numerous timess....so amita bachchan is probably very shylleti ;) ;D
hai phai---(the difference in pronounciation as against hi fi) you pronounce this with a little stress on the 'h' in phai
usage: 'partner aij central road o ekta hai phai PAKHI dekhchi

ajaira---synnonym for 'andu'...as in ajaira matkotha...prattle,palaver et al .

khobor ase---usually this phrase is used in slightly precarious situations...as in...australia t ekkere green pitch...India r ibaar khobor ase :( :(
sesh paise---somewhat similar to the previous phrase
lotkani---used in cliff hanger type predicaments...
bash khawa---an embarassing situation...normally associated with bantering ;D
bouta/boutami---someone who dilly dallys always, roams around the entire day...is a
bouta...and the act is termed 'boutami'. ;D ;D ;D
he ehhe/heh ehe/hek eh--- dont know how to write this...but most of you I am sure must have got the phonetics of this phrase...when ever there is a jeopardised situation, the first
thing that comes out of the mouthis this, heh eh he. ;) ;) ;)
hek ker ek kekkeke---an example would elucidate its meaning, i presume. 'digital signal processing porikkhar proshno dekhiya ekkere hek ker ek kekkeke lagi gese' >:(...am sure you must
have got the meaning.
taloimasoy---thats something to do with a reltion betwen the in laws...not sur wat...anyone? ;D
gaincha---a towel as in gamcha
tambu---tabu, a tent
chokka pachsika---doriya kaitt hoi jawa
kentani---leaning towards one side...as in, guddi taa prochur kentar, pisa r tower taa kentaite kentaite ekdin pori jaibvo
lem---seen this word being used in relation to the lamp, but here I include it in a dfferent context. A lam is a dumbo in syhlleti.
dhundur bundur---one whose actions/motives are questionalbe

undaa---undaa means to project the upper part of the body almost parallel to the ground. Used figuratively to refer to an industrially done act...as in...'he ibaar undaa hoiya pora der...'

elku/ailku---okhon
yo/jo---Now this is what I call khati Syhlleti. Nothing like this smallish word that we utter innumerable number of times each day. Its probably the universal pronoun. Anything can be referred to by ths magic word 'yo'. Whenever something doesnt come to our minds, as in the name of a person, or the name of a place. or a deed we use this...like...'hedin yo r barit gechlam ree...', 'kail yo t ekkhan cinema dekhlam', literally anything.
'jo' is probably the rural version of 'yo'. The useage is the same.
dhamail---I dont know if this word is syhlleti in itself. Dhamail is the song and dance scenario that takes place during marriage ceremonies. (Girls dancing and singing....aha aha...uddum uduum ;D :D)
pirit---The syhlleti for love, preet. But pirit is used in day to day life in a discouragingsense...as in 'tumare amaar noya boi khan dilaitam? oto piriti nai
kobiraj---in addition to the conventional meaning, in college parlance, kobiraj refers to a geek, a bookworm, one who is always engrossed in one's books(came across a lotta such people ...they are normally the ones who are the first to fall out of favour with the rest of the class) 8)
mori---muhuri...the ones who perform the clerical jobs in a courtyard, muhuri becomes mori in Syhlleti
hinan---the rather tedios act of taking a bath
cheya(someone called chandan in our college,among others used it)---shadow
betala---jar tal nai
bebhuta---dumb...another word would be 'aaua'
kamani---the two sticks in a kite, one stright running straight, corner to corner of the kite, and the other one more or less semicircular that crisscrosses the straight one towards the top of the kite. A little funda on this. The straight bambo stick, is glued firmly to the thin paper that the kite is made of. The other stick(the one in the semicircular form), is not fully guled across its entire length. Rather, its two ends are wrapped by the corners of the kite paper with the help of a little glue. The more the bend in this stick, the more efficiently the kite is supposed to fly. There are a lot of things done to achieve a balanced flight. For example, some paper jacks are applied to the tied ends of the second 'kamani' in accordance with Bernoulli's principle(well, probably, never was good in science)
Also, most of the times, a tail 'lej' is appended to the lower end of the straight 'kamani'. They say, this also helps the kite on its way. Another small thing, mostly we used ti use, 'bhaat', (yes cooked rice, rice that has not been cooked recently, that is rice that is not hot,makes a better glue that a just cooked bowl of rice)as an alternative for proper glue.

Kintu reba...maasor naamor usila ( one more great shyleti word) diya jodi aar beshi "aajaira" maatcho...te emon "pitapiti" hoibo nani...shabdhaan takho naile " khobor aase" tumar...ita maat aijkail boro shangatik...hokkolorou boyosh hor...amar ni ba aag-pees nai...onyo manushor to aase...ita purana "gaan gaiya" manushor shunar shongsaro "lem" jalaibar ichcha ni ??
Those shyleti-Hindi mixes were hilarious...reminds of the constant competition between myself and my good friend Nabarun to discover or coin the cheapest sounding phrases....I've won that battle forever with something that made Naga chase me all over the 4th hostel with a Bata slipper..." Bujhte nai koto koshte din gujaarsi partner "...may sound somewhat funny to most of you...but to the two of us...sheer genius at work.

I'll try and think up some proverbs next time...I think that's where the maximum fun is...I'll start with the first few that come to mind :
1.Ghor-aalar ghor nai, bair-aalar mokmoki ( situation where outsiders rule the roost and the owner gets no importance).
2.Chandor-o ek "do"(the alphabet) ...aar p**dor-o ek "do" ( to compare two extremities)...too bad I cannot add a lot of similar-veined ones here ;)there're several gems involving even Saira Banu which will beat the more popular hindi version involving Noor Jehan any day.
3.Sajite sajite hoila peskunda raja !!!( can there be any better way to describe women everywhere who cannot have enough make-up before going out somewhere ??)BTW, my surname can always be put as Debloshkor....peskunda hoskor ( I don't exactly know what that means, but I've been hearing this since childhood)...degrading couplets involving surnames is of course, a whole new topic altogether :) Just as :" Rupam Das, kate ghurar ghaash, khai ghurar leda-peda, amare daake thakurdada " ;D ;D
4.Kano kochu, choukho tel, ei barit boidyo na gel ( somewhat similar to "an apple a day...")
5.Maa-r kache mama-r barir gof.
6.Saath khondo Ramayan poriya Sita kaar baaf ??
7.Uba tol hoimu,tebo noiya dub ditam nai ( the slogan of the self-esteemed who would rather drown standing upright than dive bending one's own head).
8. Hazaar selam kolki baade ( everything/condition acceptable, except one, e.g. " Naga partner, please aami 1st book"..." Kita ?? Bhuli jaao...hazar selam kolki baade !!")
Anybody remembers those sentences used during kabaddi games...especially those frantic last few words when you're virtually out of breath ?? I'll put down a few...

Just to take you down memory lane....I'm sure a lot of you would have played this game...you ask somebody to say a particular word and then you follow it up with a group of rhyming words which would, in most cases,be the heights of insulting anyone those days...I'll not give any examples as I cannot think of a single one that will pass the censors...but does the word " Lenton " ring a bell ?? That was by far the most popular and common one.
How I wish those days could come back...I've really thought of many things today which I almost forgot...hope the same happens to all of you who read this.
