Kashmiri Freedom Fighter(Pig)caught in the NET

Yet another Kashmiri 'freedom fighter'(Pig) has landed himself in jail while exercising his freedom to betray this country for a few pieces of silver from the seemingly limitless coffers of the ISI. The arrest of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a former chairman of the All Party Hurriyat Conference and the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, was long overdue. He ought to have been arrested a few months ago when he openly declared on a Hindi television channel that he was loyal to Pakistan and was in fact a Pakistani citizen. Someone in authority should have questioned him at that time as to what he was doing staying in this country with an Indian passport, though temporarily confiscated for other reasons, fomenting trouble in Kashmir on behalf of his masters in Islamabad. But nobody took his rantings on the TV channel at that time seriously. However on Sunday Indians learnt the reason why Geelani was so keen to advertise his loyalty to Pakistan so very openly: it brought him bagfuls of money, illicit, of course, from his ISI masters. Geelani's houses were raided by the Income Tax department in the last couple of days. His sons-in-law Altaf Ahmad Shah and Iftikar Geelani too were raided on Sunday. In all nine places in Kashmir and three in Delhi were raided to unearth the racket of ISI funding to the Hurriyat leaders.
The catch was substantial. The Geelanis owned two houses in Delhi worth Rs 14 lakh each. From Geelani's own house in Srinagar over Rs 10 lakhs in cash and ten thousand US dollars were recovered. Documents revealing the purchase of substantial real estate and jewellery were also found. One of Geelani's sons-in-law used the cover of a journalist accredited to a Pakistani paper. From his house in South Delhi the police recovered blank visa forms of the Pakistan High Commission and a laptop computer which had stored sensitive information about the Indian troop movements.
Clearly, Geelani was a conduit for Pakistani funds in Kashmir. He misappropriated a part of it for self, family and friends while passing the rest to those who spread mayhem in the name of 'jehad' in the Valley. Geelani, a former J and K legislator, had no known sources of income other than his meagre pension of about Rs 7,000. How such a man could acquire a retinue of 14 servants, a fleet of cars, fancy gadgets and houses in Kashmir and Delhi and other pieces of valuable real estate was not unknown to anyone in the Valley. But the authorities could not pin him down unless they had solid evidence of wrong-doing.
Which they did once the entire 'hawala' network through which the ISI funded its mercenary 'freedom fighters' in Kashmir came to be unraveled with the arrest earlier this year of one Imtiaz Ahmed Bazaz. Bazaz's interrogation laid bare the London link of the hawala trail through which ISI routed funds to the 'jehadis' in Kashmir. The London-based World Kashmir Freedom Movement headed by a Kashmiri expatriate, one Ayub Thakur, was a mere front to route funds to seditious elements in the Valley. Geelani had received nearly Rs 50 lakhs from Thkaur last year alone. It is hoped the Blair Administration will not drag its feet in the extradition of Thakur on the criminal charges of fomenting sedition against this country.
The upshot of the raids was the arrest under POTA of senior Geelani who had been sent to the Ranchi jail in order to make it hard for him to sell his brand of Pakistani patriotism to Kashmiris. His sons-in-law too were arrested and booked under various provisions of the IPC, including the Official Secrets Act. Besides, Geelani Sr. was also booked under the Foreign Exchange Management Act and the Public Safety Act. Predictably, he and a few other Kashmiris of his ilk were quick to smell political vendetta against the arrest. But these were hollow words without any meaning, for neither Geelani nor anyone else in the Hurriyat Conference was ready to explain as to how so much of cash came to be owned by the Jamaat-e-Islami leader. A few weeks ago when another Hurriyat leader was arrested for being the recipient of ISI funds his reaction too was the same, viz. political vendetta. The arrest of Geelani, a known hardliner in the Hurriyat conference who openly pleaded the Pakistani cause, has elicited criticism from Islamabad too. Clearly, the ISI is worried that it has lost one of its key 'freedom fighters' in Kashmir. But it is hoped that the authorities in New Delhi will not be cowed down by the criticism from certain misguided quarters who have been pushing for a soft approach towards the leaders of the Hurriyat conference. The truth is that Pakistan would not countenance anyone who speaks the language of moderation and peace in Srinagar.
That was why Abdul Gani Lone was gunned down last month. His killing was a message from ISI that those who were on its payroll should jolly well do its bidding instead of straying even an inch from the path earmarked by it. Lone paid the price for his half-hearted attempt to consider participating in the coming J and K elections.
Geelani was a hardliner who not only parroted the ISI line but obliged others in the Hurriyat Conference to sing the same tune. With his arrest the Indian State has served notice to other elements in Kashmir who are hand in glove with the ISI. They must sever their perfidious links or be prepared to undergo the full rigours of the law. Meanwhile, given the precarious state of Pakistan's finances General Musharraf should be thankful to this country for saving him the bother of funding at least one front-ranking leader of the so- called Kashmiri 'freedom fighters '. He can better spend the same money on feeding starving children in a couple of madrasas.
