Is Sylheti spoken in Assam same as in Sylhet?
«on: 12/19/01 at 12:04:00 »

I am a Londonee Sylheti, went to London when I was a child to join my father. I was born in Sylhet. In London, there are tens of thousands of Sylhetis, all from the Sylhet region.

I just wondered you sylheti guys/gals in Asham might have borrowed many loan words from Bengali and Assamese in your daily contact with W.Bengal and in Assam. In Sylhet there are dialects in Sylheti! For example people in Sylhet Town, speak posh Sylheti, then you have each major district of Sylhet having its own dialect, like Bishnathi,Sydpuri,Beani-bazari, etc. It is not a dialect but a language of its own right and culture. We in England are proud of it and speak freely in Radios. Syloti khoithe shorom khene khorto re ba, shunar chand hokhol.

To all Sylheti guys/gals in Asham: Kitha betain/beteen, tumra kitha khor-ray? Tumuthain Siloti balatike math-thay faroni? Tumra ze Siloti matho Aami jani-na. Itha Bengali hokhol-the Amra-re bhala faiyna. Thara amrar math loiya dong khore! Halar halain! khotoboro shahosh! Bengali ekhol the zane-na ze Siloti manush-or Lhakahn ar bala manush nai. Khobordar! Siloti khoa bhoilo-na. Aar huno, Amra Londonee hokhol Bengali re bala faina, thara saina amrar math hiktho. Amrar bone-na erar loge. Amara zekhon Desho zai visito, Amra mori zai Sylhot zai-barlagi ar khunu districto zaina. Sylhot Amrar desh.

hi Shamim
i very well agree with you. but out here some people are there who feel so embrassed to speak silchar bengali (which is very much similar to sylehti) and as a result they make a good masala mixture of kelu (west bengal bengali) and local language of silchar which is really funny and this people should be ashamed of their attitude.
though i am studying in west bengal i never try to hide the fact that my bengali is different .
and if you are proud of ur language no one will dare to make fun of your language.

Thanks for replying Nazia, ar bala asoni?

I just wondered whether you people in Asham think Sylheti is separate from Bengali as a language and culture. I mean Bengalis have different diet than Sylhetis. Even in Bangladesh, people from places like Comilla, Borishall and other districts have similar eating habits, like adding sugar in their curries (yak!) They all seem to share their culture with their Bengali cousins in West Bengal. Why is it often that we Sylhetis always debate whether we are Bengalis or not? The fact that Sylhtis in London, and in Sylhet debate this many times merely confirms the fact that we are not Bengalis. Do you think that Bengalis in other districts like Noakhali, Mymenshing and places like West Bengal ever debate, whether they are Bengali or not. Off course not. If proper research were undertaken from a neutral perspective then the results would be very clear.

In parts of London where Sylhetis are common, local Government jobs advertisement states that ‘Applicant must able to speak Sylheti fluently’ which makes it clear that non-Sylhetis can’t apply for these jobs unless they learn our language. This is in fact understood by English people in England that they are actually learning Sylehti as opposed to Bengali so that they communicate with new arrivals from Sylhet and work with them.  The reason that Sylehits in England are powerful is due to the fact that over 95% of all Bangladeshis come from Sylhet District alone! Marriage between Sylhetis and Bengalis is very rare due to the language. If I meet a Bengali person in a plane on a trip to Sylhet I would converse on English, as frankly I can’t speak Bengali.

What do you think?

Hi ! Nazia
I think it is lack of quality with you. I personally don't think that it is too difficult to speak in Kelu if you know Syelleti. I feel verry sorry for your comments that after staying 3 years with them till today also you aren't in a position to speak in Bengali (Kelu). I think Sylletis are very strong in learning new languages. Myself also partly sylleti, but as I am in Maharastra so I have learnt the Marathi language & For your information even My Marathi friends can also speak some bengali (Kelu) comments. So I Hope that you will come out of the problem very soon.

Hello Aakash & Nazia,

I think Nazia is concerned that if she speaks Kelu Felu?, Her Bengali class mates would pick her non-Bengali accent and enquire where she came from. She could fear that her classmates would ridicule her if she gives slight hint that she is Sylheti. I know from past experience that one of my Khala, who was studying in Dhaka, her classmates were begging her to speak few words in Sylheti so that they could make fun out of it.  Please tell us Nazia, why do you find it difficult to speak Bengali to your classmates, despite living there for 3 years. Is it because the reason that I outlined. Afne go shuna, khene Bengali mathoin-na erar loge? Or you could speak Sylheti with them, so what if they don’t understand, that’s their problem. By the way, what are you studying?

Hi Nazia;
Every thing is all right. You are sure that U can learn bengali (Kelu) yes I am confident that U can do it, Your friend circle is also good that They are not making any joke or trying to do anything like it when U R using Sylleti with UR parents. It should not be done with anybody. U R studying Computer Engg that's good one, Go ahead. But dear madam I am sorry to say that U cannot conclude a general statement on the mentallity of all Bengali's. You have no right to do the same. Still today How many Bengali's U have faced? I am having lot many friends who belongs to different community some persons of some community may be have different ideologies but that doesn't mean that the entire community is like that. This is surely a wrong statement. I will say that within all community majority of the people are good, that's why the world is still Civilized, otherwise ??????. U should understand it better that bengali's R good people that's why they are still allowing You ( Being a Sylleti, Bangaladeshi) to study here. You should say that this is their greatness not their weakness.
My dear in Future please don't try to pass general statements, because todays world belives on statistics (Data) Being a computer student it should be your motto.

hey akash
don't make assumptions that all my frens r bengali out there in my college or i am bangladeshi. i don't mean that bengali people r bad .u see i have stayed in various parts of  india  from childhood onwards and i strongly feel that people of each part have some typical mentality of their own (it excludes those bengali who r not staying in bengal).i have bengali frens  who r not from bengal and their mentality is not like that.
how do  u relate mentality and goodness .mind it i never once made a statement that they r bad

Calm down you fellas,

Aakash, I was slightly disturbed to read your comment when you responded to Nazia by saying ‘You (being a Sylheti Bangladeshi) to study here’ how do you know that she is from Bangladesh? Is it because her name is Nazia? I am disappointed to read your ill-judged comments as an admirer of your intellectual ability.

I find Bengalis, though I know very few of them, are tight in financial terms and are very cold. Compare that with a Sylheti, wherever they are based, they are easy going, friendly and very hospitable even to a total stranger.

Also fren nazia, you claim yourself to be a proud Sylheti, please say a few Sylheti lines for me to test your Sylheti credentials, as you haven’t mentioned any Sylheti words. Afne sylheti mathbani zudi mind na khoroin!.

Boy !!! Why don't someone let the Khasis/Assamese/Garos ( and lots of others) know this fact. At least the Shyletis will not be prosecuted as Bengalis..
