Integration -  A Political Issue?
«on: 08/12/05 at 07:26:55 »

After the London Bombing here in the UK, there is a lot of talk among the politicians for people to integrate with the wider society instead of living within a hub based on religious identity or other akin to one another.

And now Salman Rushdie is arguing that, "Islam needs to be reformed to bring it into the modern era."

"A broader interpretation of the Koran would lead to better relations and cut alienation, he writes in the Times."

Can there be a broader interpretations of the 'Mahabharat', the 'Ramayan' or other scriptures or the 'Guru Granth', both Hindu and Sikhs have extremists among them.

Within our disintegrated world, Is the question of integration too far fetched ?

Can policies help in this matter?

If so, how will it be enforced?

I see that there is no interest in this subject.

I have put this subject on another site, there was alot of interest on it, so I thought I'll try it here.  It seems that Silcharites are not interested.

Perhaps, admin should remove it?

There are 'extremists' in every religion, and I don't think any new government policies will change that fact.

I do agree with some of what Rushie is saying though. We do need reform and to be able to be self-critical of our own religion without being shot down by hardliners - who automatically think you're being blasphemous - you have to take into account the context in which the Quran was written...

But he seems to have forgotten the fact why Muslims have this hatred toward the West in the first place. Maybe if the Israel-Palestine conflict was bought to an end, maybe if the West didn't help support corrupt leaders for it's own ends, maybe if... we might just see a change in Islamic opinion/thought? Just maybe...

In my opinion I think education and economic prosperity are the biggest weapons in fighting terrorism.

Who needs to be integrated and to what? I have also read Rushdie's article. But the question is not only for the muslims, but christians, shikhs, buddhists and hindus also. Everybody needs to get integrated in to the stream that's called humanism. But again, that's like believing in utopia. So, guess, whatever is going will go on.
