I guess that's a nice and easy way. But let's think of a better way. Start brainstorming. |

Dear debashish_ch.
This present message alert system is OK . Only needs one improvement. The new incoming message should show separately i.e., if you have 3 messages already stored in your inbox, then the alert should show that “ You have 3 + 1 new message”. Otherwise you must remember how many messages are in store, so that an increase in that number will indicate new incoming message(s)..Once you read the message it will be included in total number, so next time, if you have 2 new messages, it will show “ You have 4 + 2 new messages” or to make it simple, even a blinking “new message “ also will do.
If others also feel so, then we can request Admin to change accordingly.

as debasish pointed, the number of PMs is displayed on the top of the page if you are logged in.
It can be changed to display the number of unread msgs. But can we not just delete the already read messages so that theres no confusion.

Deleting already read messages will not be that good for users as sometimes we need to go back and see what some one wrote me in the past.
It may be done like Yahoo or hotmail, say it will tell (taking the same example as before) no. of messages: 23 (2) where 2 is the number of new unread messages where 23 is the total number of messages in the inbox.
In fact I was speaking something else at the beginning, sorry for not being clear. By 'To inform users', I was meaning to inform users by sending them an email, as we get when we track a message in Maha adda. This is a very common feature in a lot of forum, and I know all phpBB forums are using this option.
But then again, we have to check the technical side ... and that only admin can say whats possible and what not.

I guess a mailer system is too expensive a proposition. But the whole idea of 3(1) messages is good, and simple to understand also.
