Pocket-hit IA seeks nod to fly over 50 sectors G GANAPATHY SUBRAMANIAM
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2003 01:11:56 AM ] NEW DELHI: In a move that is likely to jolt the domestic air travel market, Indian Airlines has sought permission from the government to withdraw from 50 commercially-unviable sectors.
While the profitability and market share of the public sector carrier would improve significantly if the proposal is implemented, a number of smaller towns and tourist centres would be left without air connectivity.
Indian Airlines is the only operator covering most of these non-profitable routes as private carriers focus more on prime routes connecting the metros and towns that generate large volume of traffic, civil aviation ministry sources said.
If the government clears the move, private airlines will rake in the moolah on sectors where there is room only for one or two players. The routes left totally vacant would provide new opportunities for smaller players like Jagson Airlines who operate with small aircraft.
At the same time, competition would intensify further on metro routes as Indian Airlines would redeploy capacity on more profitable routes. This would mean a deep dent in the bottomline of private sector competitors.
For passengers, the worst case scenario would be total vacuum in sectors where Indian Airlines is the only service provider. This includes connections like Mumbai Vadodara, Chennai-Calicut, Mumbai-Cochin, Bhopal-Indore, Jamnagar-Bhuj, Ahmedabad-Vadodara, Raipur-Nagpur and Kolkata-Ahmedabad. Sectors like Bangalore-Coimbatore, Ahmedabad-Bangalore and Ahmedabad-Aurangabad would also be cut off if the Indian Airlines proposal is accepted as the airline is keen to cut multi-sector flights and replace them with direct flights.
The number of sectors on which Indian Airlines makes losses has doubled to 50 now as compared to the situation in 1999-2000. These flights do not even recover cash costs.
The sectors from which IA wants to pull out includes short distance flights, tourist routes, north-east and multi-sector operations. The losing routes connecting the north-east include Kolkata-Guwahati, Tezpur-Dimapur, Kolkata-Silchar, Kolkata-Agartala, Aizwal-Impahal and Agartala-Guwahati.
Though it was always known that Indian Airlines was making losses due to operations on unviable routes, this is the first time the airline has sought to pull out of these sectors. The proposal follows a direction from civil aviation secretary K Roy Paul to identify the causes for the mounting losses of the airline. The civil aviation ministry could either seek compensation from the government for social sector obligations or permission for Indian Airlines to pull out of unviable routes.
The airline has been operating on tourist routes, north-east and certain pairs of small towns due to political compulsions. Many profitable flights also turn loss-making due to a new stop added in between to pacify political heavyweights. After years of negotiations, the government has finally provided subsidy to IA for additional operations in NE. |

God save Silchar !!!
Worst case scenerio: No flights to Silchar !!! Average Case : Nothing changes. Best Case : Jet Airways comes in OR Priority of Cal-Sil flights increased as most losses are due to cancellations and further expenses for hotel accomodation/travel re-imbursements.
One possible bad thing that can happen is the number of flights to silchar is brought down to 2-3 flights a week !!!

This would be a disaster for Silchar. This appears to be quite different from a news that I saw recently about some grand schemes to inter-connect the cities of northeast with each other as well as have better connections for going out with more flights to Calcutta. Silchar-Calcutta flights were supposed to be increased to more then one in a day on some days of the week. And all this was to be done by Alliance Air which has leased or bought some new aircrafts called ATR or something, which are smaller planes then the Boeing-737s that are now used in these routes. |
