I think this is the only guy from Barak valley ranking within 20

Sushovan Podder : 528 (B3 EN GS GM SS AM), Silchar Collegiate School, Silchar, Cachar

He has secured 17th position.

For complete list see the following link.

Jauk...some consolation...well done Sushovon !!!

I was severely bugged by people at office y'day ( a lot of whom have children who had passed HSLC this year ) for not being able to show a name from my place of origin in the top 10...atleast this betters our Silchar's image somewhat.

For a change, Don Bosco's monopoly on the merit list has been stalled this time somewhat...St. Stephens isn't probably the most famous school...but they have the Top Gun this year...even nos. 2 and 3 are not from the usually familiar schools.

But have you all looked at the obscenely high percentage of marks they manage to get these days ? Only 23 marks seperate the #1 from the #20...91.33% to 87.5%...and even people ranked 20 have got "letter" marks in all 6 subjects...wow !!!!

If Gabbar Singh were real, he would 've surely said, " Yeh inke gharwale inhe kaun si chakki ka aata khilate hain re ?? Zara inke marksheet to dekh !! Bahut karare hain saale..."  ;D ;D

Well Jimut.....

I really wonder.. what kind of Chakkis are available these days!!!

Back in 1976, I passed HSLC from Shillong..having the Meghalaya No.2 position !!! ;D ;D ;D with 80.25 % ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I scored 3 letters, two in maths and the third..guess what!!  in BENGALI.
It had been a record in both Assam and Meghalaya boards. Is the record broken? I did not keep any track of it. Only thing which I was informed by some people while I was in MSc, that my answer scripts were checked by three examiners  after lots of eyebrow raising.

Huh...after all that, I religiously opted for pure science, as it had been a "COMMON SENSE"  that time that only science graduates get jobs !!!!

I face difficulty in writing in Bengali now   :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Dr. Sarma,

Your record in mathematics may have been broken or atleast levelled by this time. Because the highest mark in mathematics these days touch 100. I am not sure what's the deal with Bengali though. But that may have been broken too. I thought studying engineering had become a norm by the end of late 60s. It is nice to know that some of our cream is in pure science too and has not drained to some western country. By the time I left school, 11 years after you, it was even blasphemous to consider pursuing pure science for somebody with your adademic credentials.
You may like to try some Bangla font to rekindle your love for Bangla. Get a Bangla key bord. And you are all set. You won't have to write. Just type .....

Wah Asiti-babu

Matric mein 2nd...Bangla mein "letar"...badhia hain... ;D ;D
In fact, yaaaa maalik !! 2nd hoislai ni ??  ;D

My parents used to tell me how difficult it used to be in their days to get even 70% and as the times progressed there has been a gradual increase in the percentages...incidentally, I read a very interesting article last week roughly along the same lines but it also hinted that on an average, the students are also getting a lot smarter due to various factors --- competition, peer pressure, huge flow of information, etc.etc.

I guess in 1976, 80% plus would have been huge...your Number 2 ranking is testimony to that...only one guy/girl was better than you that year...and that letter in Bengali was very rare even probably upto the last 4-5 years...so your record must have been standing for a long time like Bob Beamon's long jump ;D
These days, of course, it's quite different. If you re-read my last post, you'll see a lot of guys this year have crossed the 80 barrier in all subjects...that includes Bengali...in fact, I know of a girl who's got a 2nd division this year with letter in Bengali...maybe the scoring pattern has changed...and more inportantly, the examiners are getting rid of their baseless fear of giving good marks to deserving answer sheets...

I think confused has rightly assessed the situation right now...and I would confidently say that my own entry into engineering was just a thoughtless " behti ganga mein haath dhona. " Of course, I don't think joining pure science would've proved any good... I would've been just as bad ;D ;D

On hindsight, I feel I should 've studied stuff like English, mass communication or journalism but that would've probably been a case of "heart ruling the head"...atleast I didn't have the guts to go for that during those days...
Never liked the engineering course ( despite studying the only branch that I thought I would somewhat like ) and the fact that I still got decent marks actually proves how loophole-ridden our education system still is...
In fact, I'm sure a lot of our doctors, engineers and other professional degree holders actually are there just for the heck of it...do no justice to their jobs...just because it's a smart move in the present circumstances... :-/

I've been fortunate enough to see a wide cross section of Indian people in life so far and I've actually made an effort to delve a bit into their culture, thoughts and psyche...I've seen many many people, with maybe a fraction of my marks in Class X and half as successful as me whom I've clearly felt have much more knowledge in a wide variety of subjects and could 've probably contributed a lot more to others, if not only to themselves...it may not be proper to curse the system for this but I guess it is somewhat true...Of course, the flip side is also true...there are a lot of people with much less knowledge than me but many more times successful... ;D

Which brings us to the question , are the results of such exams a correct pointer to the skills and fortunes of a person ?? We always seem to raise a lot of hullabaloo over somebody who has secured a position in the merit list...I really don't see the point...maane "stand" kora pua-r saath khoon maaf aarki  ;D...As our dear Mihir Dutta Sir used to say, "Taar to shara jibon lej-ta muta hoiya thakbo re..." ;D ;D

True, its a nice feeling and a commendable achievement..but more often than not the person in question is driven to do things that he doesn't want to just because those things are deemed "proper" for a person of his achievements...and unfortunately, the person also mostly caves in to such pressure...

Going back to Asiti-da's Bangla...well...it's a shame really...and I too have the same problem now...my Bangla marks in Matric were a disgrace but I did manage a "letter" in Bangla in Class XII...but that day in March 1994 was the last day that I wrote a few pages of decent Bangla...I guess typing in Bangla would be slightly difficult...each key has three functions...er upre oi juktakhor-er erai ta aase...maane practise korle hoibo kintu...
Another way would be to start writing letters in Bengali...but that itself is a tough ask...these days we just type and that too only e-mails :'( I am apalled at my own handwriting these days...and I would probably get very tired if I write half-a-page...

Last year, when I was still at Bangalore, my father, fresh from a visit to South India, had asked me send something on South India tourism...I got a nice volume and packed it for the courier...then I felt a bit awkward to send only the book and decided to send a few lines to go along with it...trust me, it was a humbling experience, writing that 200-odd-word letter to my dad...maaane roshsho-oo/dirgho-oo  aar roshsho-ee/dirgho-ee loiya bitikichiri kando...I actually used a rough sheet to clear my spelling doubts on the way...as if I was someone just picking up the nuances of the language...my ego balloon got a huge prick that day...and I know, the same thing will happen if I try that again today...kichchu ekta korte laagbo...

By the way...do you get to atlest read Bengali regularly thee days...amar to onek din hoi gelo...tobe majhe majhe potrika piale pori...kintu bhala laage naa...somehow news has to be in English for me...tobe Robi Thakur / Sukumar Ray / Satyajit Ray / Samaresh ...erare abar attack korte laagbo...isshhhhh tarar 5% o budhoi porsi naa jibone... :'( :'( Jibonta shullo-annau britha...
