Dear silcharites,
I think I m one of the best person to join this debate as i have been a student of both these institutes we're talking abt.
If u ask me the truth.........I have found Cotton College much more superior to our own GC in all aspects, so far as the quality of education is concerned.
Cotton gets more of Govt funds......true......but the teaching quality never depends on tht.
So...........the debate is on the quality of teachers........... |

May be cotton college is superior than G.C college but not in all respects. If Nilima_das is trying to compare the quality of these two colleges then its crystal clear that Cotton college is the best college in Assam and G.C college is the 2nd best one.I'm from G.C college and my view about this college goes like this.
This college is a symbol of unity, the teachers are very talented and much friendly towards students , students are very decent and always ready to help one another in crisis. I may be sounding emotional but still these are facts. I'm not prasing my college , I'm just trying to put forward my views as requested by Nilima_das. |

Thankx for ur replies.... so u also agree tht Cotton is superior so far as quality is concerned. Regarding unity in teachers ..students....I have realised tht in Cotton for the first time even if I was a student of GC. I have seen teachers like prof. Kamalesh Choudhury and the way the take care of the students irerspective of race, caste N relegion. For ur information he is basically from silchar N he's HOD Chemistry.
So many other examples............and one really feels proud to say tht I was a Cottonian. I never had any such feelings when I left GC.
Emotions shall be there............but lets be impartial Coz tht may help our GC to improve. |

yeah, I do agree that GC college needs a lot of improvement.. but we should not compare it with Cotton College as "Dharti & Aasmaan"... I dont know about others..but as far as myself and some of my friends r concerned , we really felt proud of being a GCian... Nari must b agree with me in this respect. We must not forget GC College has been producing quality talents over the years..... who r holoding prestigeous positions all over India or even in abroad. It will go on and on if I strat listing down their names. ok Cotton college might b having excellent teaching staff, wonderful educational atmosphere, workculture etc etc,.. but our GC College is also not that bad as is being projected here.

I agree with Sandipan. What this College has given us is beyond expession. May be for others this college does not mean so much but for us I mean for me and my friends this college is of great impotance. And as Sandipan said there is no point comparing this two colleges as both the colleges are the pride of Assam in their own respects. |

Hi everyone..I am a GCIAN..and a very proud one at that. Nilima it will be very much helpful if you write in english..it will be much more readable. Well no point debating which college is better..GC or Cotton. It all ultimately depends on the student concerned. GCIANS of the caliber of JimutBahan, Amit Saha, Premashish, Joydip...lots more... are enough to exemplify that a college or a school can't just change a moron to a genius. Yeah obviously infrastructure helps to a certain extent but doesn't mean lack of it is the end. It merely depends on one's intent and will. There are many graduating from GC every year who on any given day can rip apart a Cottonian on every aspect. This doesn't necessarily means degrading Cotton..its a great college..but not for name..but for the individual students. A HS topper from Cotton would have also topped HS even if he would have studied from GC. The values, knowledge and guidance i have received from professors of GC College have held me in a good stead even now in my career. Three Cheers and salute to GC College.. |

So its GC College VS Cotton College.
To judge it impartially Cotton is a clear winner in every aspect be it education,quality of students,faculty or infrastructure.Cotton as an institution has evolved in the last 100 years it has been in existence.I have no doubt to say that it is the best institution in the whole of Northeast for HS and TDC students.I know some of you from Edmonds,Darrang and GC college may have a different opinion regarding this.Cotton attracts students not only from the state but from the whole of Northeast whereas GC's sphere of influence is only Barak Valley.So I think its logically not a good idea to compare between GC College and Cotton College.
This does not demeans GC College.It has an enviable history,been there for more than Half a century and has produced great intellectuals, scientists,civil servants,lawyers and even politicians.Some of its alumnis are very well placed in organisations such as NASA,BOEING,Microsoft,DRDO...and the list goes on.In a way it has been pioneering the hope of the people of Barak Valley and has made a niche name for itself.
I have also been a GC'ian during my +2 years and I am very much proud to say that.I have enjoyed every bit of my two years in GC College.Teachers like Mihir Dutta,Partha Chanda,Srimanta Dutta,Jagadish Majumdar,Badal Dhar..were simply great.
Regarding the comparison I can say that GC College has the potential to be one of the best colleges in Northeast.Its only a matter of time and effort.I think its better to discuss about the ways to bring GC College at par with Cotton rather than compare with it... For example we can discuss about the dress code imposed.I think it makes a college of the repute of GC look like an academy
.....so guys what do you think
....lets come out with new ideas which can be implemented so that everyone anywhere in the world who somehow sometime in his life was a GC'ian is proud of his ALMA MATER. |

As an ex-GCian it would have given me immense pleasure if GCC could attain the same standard as of Cotton College. In the recent past, Cotton has taken prob. an unassailable lead over GCC. The way it has been continuously reinventing itself is quite amazing. On the other hand GCC has not changed since my time apart from a few facelifts and the fact that students nowadays have to wear uniforms. If GC wants to play catch-up then it has to change the very outlook, introduce newer vocational and self-funding courses, bring in some sort of professionalism and positive attitude among the faculty. Then only, hopefully, GC can regain its position as one of the two top colleges in Assam. |
