Famous silcharites.

How about compiling a list of famous Silcharites or people from Barak valley? Those people who has left their mark on various fields. This list should also include people who have some ties to Silchar. The first person that comes to mind is definitely SM Deb. Though I don't vote for his party, he is definitely a famous person. He was the chief whip of his party in lokashbha few years back. That is quite a feat.

Arun Kumar Chanda (1899-1947) born at Silchar on 17.2.1899, played a major role in the National Movement attracting the masses into the struggle for freedom. He founded the Guru Charan College of Silchar in 1935 and became the Honorary Principal. He was an accomplished writer and formulated public opinion through the Bengali Weekly Saptak.

The Department of Posts issued a set of three commemorative postage stamps to pay homage to outstanding contributions in the socio-political arena by some grest leaders, whose birth centenary celebrations are being observed.

I think that the bhasa shoids should be clubbed as a single entity. Hence here is the list so far:
1. Bhasa sohids.
2. SM Deb.
3. AK Chanda.
4. Upendar Shankar Datta.
5. Premashis Dev.

Since this is a list of famous persons from Barak valley, how about adding some name of the persons from Hailakandi and Silchar?

however...I do agree with you...that there is no poiint having premasishda's name on that list...that makes  a mockery of the thread itself...howsoever I know premasishda personally.

one last point...talking of picking up fights...hehe...ask a kid around...and he knows who gets into fights...petty ones at that...

Few years ago as I sat in front of my computer to check emails. One email caught my immediate attention. This email modestly told me about a website that I may be interested in. The website was silchar.com. A website that is about my lovely home town. Since that day I never stopped visiting this wonderful site. It made us Silcharites a part of the the world wide web. It enabled us to connect with each other and exchange our views. When you are in an alien land, it means so much to read something in your native language or dialect. Something that makes us all nostalgic about our home thousands of miles away. If you read some posts then you will realize how strongly we feel about our roots. It also gives others an overviews of our way of life. We the Bengalis of Silchar love our hometown from the core of our hearts. Creating silchar.com was a very brilliant idea which  undoubtely deserve laurels.

You should not compare apples and oranges. No one is trying to compare Premasish with Bhasha Sahids or the other great personalities mentioned in this thread for that matter. They are all different in their own right. Bhasha Sahids are eleven brave hearts who sacrificed their lives for a cause they deeply cared. A cause to preserve the honor to speak in our mother tongue. These are the people who should be revered by all those around the globe who love and cherish their mother tougue. Is there anything more valuable than your life that you can dedicate to a cause? Is there anything more valuable to a human? How do you measure up to these martyrs?

Now some skeptic may say that there is nothing new in setting up a website. Because all it takes is to register a domain name and pay yearly fees to maintain the website. "What is so great about it? I could have done it too! ". But then they said the same thing to Colombus too. How difficult was it to discover Americas? All it took was a trip to the west! But alas! none of those people ever bothered to try that before Columbus. In a similar analogy, why those who queation Premasish did not try to setup a website. The point here is that Premasish has done something which should be applauded. The purpose of this thread is to collect some names and then let the visitors vote to decide. It is a very democratic process.
Last but not the least, let's remember that the very reason we are able to continue this discussion on this thread is because  someone called Premasish Deb envisioned silchar.com

hey guyz, y do u people fight over small topics. We are here to discuss a very good topic and what West Bengal said was really cheap ..... Ur West Bengal consists of people like Jyoti basu who brings Bangladeshis just to use them as a vote bank and nothing else. People like Mamta Banerjee who just bring shame to the state by doing hilarious things in the middle of the road.

If we go by parliamentarians, then we also have Karnendu Bhattacharjee who is a current parliamentarian....also Moinul Haq and his wife and Nihar Laskar were parliamentarians. But I don't think that's the criteria for nominating "famous Silcharites".

Moinul Haq was the first high profile politician from Barak Valley after independence. People talk about his contributions like getting the Silchar Medical College and REC in Silchar.

But then he was also implicated of conspiracy against Indian government to merge Cachar with East Pakistan, in one of the most stunning works of investigative journalism by Amitabha Choudhury of "Jugantar" in his "Nepathyya Darshan" column, for which he went on to earn the Magsaysay award. Moinul Haq did file a defammation case against Amitabha Choudhury, but then he withdrew the case as well because the court proceedings apparently were almost confirming some of Amitabha Choudhury's allegations.

And one more piece of information may be relevant regarding Moinul Haq....that he was a Private Assistant to Mohammad Ali Jinnah before making it big in Assam politics after independence.

i m not his fan at all. i personally dont like the guy but he had made it big by becoming vice president of bcci. what are his contributions to cricket in the valley? nothing. but still he is from our region & he is famous. lobbying is also an art & when u think that he defeated other political stalwarts from maharashtra & karnatak u have to give him that. remember, many of them in the list have not done anything for the valley. once again i dont like this man & i only know him as tulsi gunda who is now vice president of bcci.

Mathagaram and bebhoota, I am really enjoying your exchange of arguments.  Firstly though you call yourself mathagaram you are definitely not a mathagaram person. Your point by point rational for not including Gautam Roy is indicative of your cool brain. I liked bebhoota's reply too. You call yourself bebhoota which means slow but I bet a very smart person is hiding behind that pseudonym. It is wonderful when people initiate discussions on the basis of logic and rationale. Keep it up guys.

i would then lobby for the names of mr. kabindra purkaystha and dr(phd). amalendu bhattacharjee. reasons are that mr.purkaystha was a central minister recently and although earned himself some disrepute done well for the telecom in silchar & surroundings. he is still well placed in the bjp national executive and is regarded as the father of the organisation in north east. it is important as bjp is the premier political party of the country today. dr. amalendu bhattacharjee is one of the very few academics who took interest in the local history & culture and has done extensive research in those fields. published a few books and took part in national seminars. have got applauds from academics from the western world as well. i would like to request the admin to gather more info from mr.bhattacharjee & publish them in this site.

Bhai bebhuta, afne dekhi boisnob binoyo bigolito hoira. Kabindra babu is definitely a big name in Barak valley. In fact I voted for him. Once I caught a glimpse of him asking a question in the zero hour. I was rather disappointed at the way he responded. He definitely lacks energy. Sad thing is that if he is a canditate, I propably will vote for him again because I don't want to be a part of electing an italian PM. There is also one name that did not come up in the discussion so far. It is Nurul Huda. I don't have very good things to talk about communism. But is he any good in central politbureau of his party? My WBite communist friends do mention his name. Forgive my ignorance but I have not heard of Amalendu Bhattacharjee. I think the goal is to make a list of famous Silcharites.

Mr Rupak Chakraborty.
He sacrificed the prospect of a good career to propagate the importance of blood donation. Initially, with a small team, he started to make available donors for patients of poor families. But, as days passed, the demands were far exceeding the numbers that his team could manage to provide. Then, he conceptualised, the idea of mobilising the mass. The process is still under way, but today, a person in Silchar is more likely to get a willing donor. Mr Chakraborty is also actively involved in a Tuberculosis Campaign under the guidance of Dr Lakhkhan Das of Red Cross Society.
I think a person like Mr Rupak Chakraborty, whose passion towards life finds expression in the tears of a torchmaker whose 9yr old daughter's heart surgery could be performed due to the endless efforts of Mr Chakraborty for around three months, rightly deserves a place in the esteemed list of  "Famous Silcharites".

I don't get it !!

Why should Kamalendu Bhattacharjee be in there, and not Kabindra Purkayastha ? After all Kabindra Purkayastha was a central minister and a lot more people across India know him, but the chances of a lot more people across India knowing Kamalendu Bhattacharjee is highly improbabale. What has he done or achieved, except acting as the main henchmen for Rana-babu for a long time in Cachar politics, and then falling on his face when he tried to make it big on his own(Remember the lost assembly elections ? ).

And we surely cannot base this list on a possible crush someone had, on this absolutely despicable human being.

Its an insult on hard working honest Silcharites to have any such corrupt names in there, whose only contribution seems to have been a lifetime of work in degenerating the life and overall society of Silchar.

Just look at what the legacy of people like Kamalendu Bhatt is for Silchar.... and you will know what he is. As for his English literature skills and all that bull ...show me one book or anything that he has written which can be called literature, and I may agree.....just preparing good notes on Shakespeare and Marlowe to make students get the pass marks doesn't cut it for me, ok ! ...that is nothing out of the ordinary. Lot of teachers have done that and it doesn't make a litterateur.

i didn knew that the criteria for a famous silcharite is that he has to be known by mr.confused. i will not ask for any names to be included though i had compiled a list with some real scoops because just in case mr. confused havent heard their name. i dont want to insult those personalities. i will be in the maha adda and also in this link passing comments but will not put forward any names. as far as the coment on kabindra babu is concerned if u can add mr.k.b's name for no reason then why not him, just because u didnt like his reply in the zero hour.hahaha. if kamalendu babu can be on the list only because he is good in english why not partho chanda. i m not recommending his name though. good luck with ur compilations. this baishnav as u called me is an angry tantrik now.

Nadi,
U have really made a good attempt by naming Mr.Satananda Bhattacharjee.
Now I'd like 2 bring 2 the fore  another person who is not that much famous but is a very eminent name in Silchar.   He is Prof. Joydeep Biswas, Sr. Lecturer in Economics, Cachar College. He is such a person who can make a ordinary guy feel himself as extra ordinary. His magical words has got that much potential. A nice human being, a fine orator, always ready to help the students, and of course a great teacher..... Joydeep Sir is combination of all these qualities.

Mr. Confused

I suggest the name of Kobi Shkati Pada Bramachary to be included in your list. He is the renowned poet of Bengali literature. His poetry has been published in many reputed literary magazines including “Desh” the leading Bengali literary magazine. He was the ex- Head of Bengali  Department, G.C. College. He enjoys the fame of a great poet among the admirer of Bengali literature  in NE as well as WB.

Here is a small note on Prof. Amolendu Bhattachrjee,

Prof Amolendu Bhattachrjee is among the few genius of Barak valley. His domain of work is folk literature. He spends most of his time on researching folk literature of Barak vally. If we need any information regarding the genesis of any sylheti word and proverb.. Amlendu babu is the answer. Personally I was his student in College. I still remember the way of his teaching .He was very methodical in his class like a real researcher. Research is his forte. People like Amulendu babu should be included in the list of famous Silcharites though they don’t want it. Barak valley should be grateful to Amlendu Babu for his work because in this era of information technology when we are forgetting our heritage and culture he is preserving and working with them with utmost care and sincerity. If Amlendu babu come to know in a remote area of  Barak Valley there is some old “puthi” he will go there and collect it .. such is Amolendu babu……. A man who loves his heritage and culture…

Dear Nodi and Mr. Sysho…….

You have referred Prof Joydeep Biswas’s  name as a famous Silcharite .But I think sir would not fill comfortable if he come to know that his name ihas been forwarded for the famous Silcharite. Because I know Prof. Joydeep Biswas personally. He really tries to manifest the real self of a student and inspires them.  I have passed some valuable time with Sir. That was the early days of his Lectureship in Cachar College. I have all respect and love for sir and that is why I am not happy to see his name in this Famous Silcharite List…
I know Sir has got the tremendous potentiality to excel beyond our expectation. And some day he will prove it. Let us wait for that day …..

Well, I am happy to see that like me there are other admirers of Prof. Joydeep Biswas.!

i think we are missing a point here. by famous silcharite what i understand is that a person who has made his name oustside silchar by doing something in any field either staying in silchar or outside. what we are seeing here is that people putting forward the names of their admired ones which i think is not right. i also admire and respect some of the teachers i had contact with like sitesh deb, partho chanda, prof. raj and others but i will not call them famous outside silchar. i never was a student of dr.amalendu bhattacharjee but i forwarded his name after i came to know about him from scholars outside silchar. correct me if i am wrong. with due respect to all whose names are being forwarded - urs only bebhoota.

Hi Jaydeep,
This is an open discussion. I could not figureout any mathematical model or something for the purpose of this discussion.  ;D
This is what ideally should happen:
Say somebody suggests a name. We should wait and see if anybody has a counter argument against the inclusion of that name and also if there is any supporting fact. If nobody objects to a name being included to the list then it should get in. Just what happened in case of Dr. Gupta's name. You are the first one to object.
Emotion is definitely not something that should guide us. I like the point you are trying to make. Many people outside silchar probably don't know Dr. Gupta's name. If nobody objects to your argumet then we may remove his name from the list. I have never included any name on the basis of my personal liking. That will be wrong and will loose the whole purpose. If you have noticed, I always suggest a name and then wait for someone to back it up. But then I am just a mere mortal. I do have my biases. If you think my bias has influenced the list then feel free to correct me. As I said, if you have a rationale behind your argument I shall be more than happy to change my opinion.

Dear Debabrata,
I am happy that you have posted Shkati Pada Bramachary's name. I also liked your posting on Amalendu babu.

Bhai bebhoota
I liked your point on Amalendu babu. Everybody should know about people like him and those who are doing such great work behind the screen. I do admit that it is because of my ignorance that I didn't know him. It is true that I was not familiar to his contributions. I am sorry if my comment has caused you any heartache. That was definitely not intended. Those of you who has the opportunity to know people like him should publicise them at every opportunity. As you have rightly done here. Tell people about their work and their contribution. If somebody is doing a great work then it should not go unnoticed.

To,
  Confused

Here I am appreciating UR approach and attitude in the naming caucus of the Famous Silcharites. UR idea is nice.

Here I want to add a Name in the list of Famous Silcharites. That person was a Freedom Fighter. Name is “Lakhu Dutta”. He was Famous for his distinguished activities in the Freedom movement.

This is an open discussion. I could not figureout any mathematical model or something for the purpose of this discussion.  ;D
I agree with your view Mr. Confused. It is not possible to figure out   some specific parameters to measure the term. “Famous”. This is a subjective matter. Adolph Hitler is famous and well respected  in his won country but in rest of the world  people hate himself  for  his dictatorial rule of Germany, which led to the deaths of millions in World War II. So, what is good for one may not be the same for other. But before delve into any serious topic like “famous silcharite’ we should chalk out some guide lines. As Mr.Bebhoota told---

“ by famous silcharite what i understand is that a person who has made his name outside silchar by doing something in any field either staying in silchar or outside. What we are seeing here is that people putting forward the names of their admired ones which i think is not right.”

As people are suggesting there favorite person’s name and this is creating unnecessary debate and it’s really a matter of heartache for the people attached to the forwarded person. As access to this message board is a mouse click away for any XYZ and this is the most risky portion of such topics. I have seen some unwanted and dirty comments related with some renowned Silcharites. Anyway I liked the recent post of Mr. Confused and   his non-biased attitude and his attempt to make this thread clean. Mr. Confused please come up with some guidelines so that people can use this thread to know Famous silcharites in a better way without causing heartache ……………

Jaydeep,

This is how Merriam Webster dictionary defines famous:
1 a : widely known
  b : honored for achievement
Let's follow this guideline unless someone has a better suggestion.

I recommend the following procedure.
Say somebody suggests a name. We should wait and see if anybody else has a counter argument against the inclusion of that name and also if there is any supporting fact. If nobody objects to a name being included to the list then it should get in.
Right now, we have three suggestions:
Kobi Shkati Pada Bramachary ( Poet )
Satananda bhattacharjee ( Journalist)
Lakhu Dutta ( Freedom fighter )
Also one suggestion to remove Dr. Rahul Gupta from the list.
If anyone can explain more about " Gopa Aich "
Yes, it is the same person. I am hoping bebhoota will be able to help me to throw more light on this issue. Bebhoota, can you help?

Hello Mr bebhoota I liked your saying but I'm taking a little guts to say something , if we honestly think of the famous silcharites I think it will just be a handful of persons , and if you think that your very well known Amalendu bhattacharjee is famous because  he has done something which is really worth appreciating then there are many others. And most importantly then you people would have directed some parameters to asses a famous Silcharite. i think its a good attempt to know about many hidden talents by putforwarding the names of admired ones , who knows may be from that an outstanding silcharite comes out. If I don't know a peson that doesn't limits his/her quality. anyways don't take me wrong ,

gathered some info from my mother about gopa aich. they used to live in shillongpatty area where there is sonar cachar building now. she is sister of mr. ashish dutta. she studied in g.c.college in early sixties & took part in the bhasha andolan. thats all i know about her connections with silchar. as far as i know she never took any interest in silchar after she left & thats why i would call her a famous silcharite with criticism.

and miss nadi. i didnt understand what u tried to say in ur last posting although the english was good but made no sense to me. please elaborate. i would only say that i proposed mr.bhattacharjee's name not because he is well known to me but because he is famous outside silchar as well. hope u understand the point.

In my life, I have seen a lot of Chamcha’s in different form and manner. You must be the chief of them. Ask yourself the following questions:

1. How did Rana Babu and his brothers/father have acquired all the properties in the most expensive localities in Silchar and other places?
2. Why the roads and drainage system of Silchar are seventy-five years old? What Rana Babu has done to improve these?
3. Some fools call Silchar Airport road a VIP road, what is VIP about it? What your chief whip has done to at least maintain the road?
4. His wife was the chairperson of the municipality. Do you know that Silchar’s Roads, Markets, City Buses, Street Lighting, Hospitals, Culverts & Bridges, Drinking Water System, School Buildings and thousand of other things are at least ONE HUNDRED YEARS behind then South India and TWO HUNDRED YEARS backward then the western countries?

The most prominent person of Silchar should be one who has given everything for Silchar and do not have a FAT bank balance for himself and his Chamchas.

Sincerely,
Matha Garam

How about compiling a list of famous Silcharites or people from Barak valley? Those people who has left their mark on various fields. This list should also include people who have some ties to Silchar. The first person that comes to mind is definitely SM Deb. Though I don't vote for his party, he is definitely a famous person. He was the chief whip of his party in lokashbha few years back. That is quite a feat.

Bah ! Bah ! Good topic...and so many replies...amiyo line-o darai jai  :)

Mathagaram ekta kotha to thik koiso...contribution to Silchar is a big factor...but let us not forget that for a "famous" list, we have to consider people who in fact, are quite well-known, for good reasons or bad or both, in the outside world. We should not be prejudiced by our own preferences and get tempted to include people we love/respect/admire/support.

By this logic, I feel most of the professors/lecturers should not be there in the list...amra shobeu to tarar kaase porsi...so they are people of respect and renown to us...but to declare that they are FAMOUS ( minus probably their own, limited if I may add, circle ) is something that I don't agree with. And by the same logic, one has to accept that probably all political figures that have figured in the list so far have to be retained. You have to agree that more people know a prominent political figure than somebody who's done some academic research that interest's only a few. Their respective contributions may be debated upon depending on what your idea of "good work" maybe but fact is, a FAMOUS person has to be a name that a lot many people from different walks of life and parts of world recognize.

Oi je lok-ta aasil..."Bhuban paharer moina.." koiya balloon besto...I'm sure 10 times more people know him in Silchar then any freedom fighter, academic, etc. But will you term him as "famous" ?? I guess no, as his fame-spread is limited. But a politician, now anyone would agree that Mr. S M Dev is known by 10 times more people than the ballon-walla across the country ( and possibly the world ).

Aar dekhte gele, kun kobi-lekhok e kuno ischool o ekta desk bench ba ontoto ekta 200 takar water filter donate korsoin je kowa hoito tara major contributor ?? This is my personal opinion, but I strongly feel that unless you are Nobel/Booker/Pulitzer material, or maybe highly flashed by our all-encompassing present media, you cannot be rightly called famous expect for maybe in your own minds...taile to dekhte gele amar industry-th amareu onek loke chine who hail from different parts of the country...will you call me "famous" ;D?? Ghonta !!!

What interests me in this thread  is that it has really made me think...the list has become something that should probably be named " list of people we all want to be there in a list of famous Silcharites " Maane I'm probably very emotionally inclined to keep Laku Dutta, A K Chanda in the list...maybe even Moinul Haq Choudhury...but I have my doubts if they are so very well known outside Silchar.

A good outcome of this thread is that is has made a lot of us aware of certain people who have some significant achievements...probably we should highlight them more so that these people become truly famous...

But should we also not start thinking...it's about time we really got somebody who is really famous for ( if possible) all the right reasons ?? In every place, politicians are famous. I'm sure all the top universities and colleges elsewhere have much more respected and remowned scholars who would still not be dubbed "famous". There are a lot of people who have established institutions, organizations or social movements in their region whose significance or and recall-factor is much much much more than our own small town...even they are not that famous over there...all this chiefly because they have other people, good or bad, who just really stand out. The CM of Maharashtra is probably more important and famous than any of our politicos ever...but he has a Sachin Tendulkar or a Madhuri Dixit or a Homi Bhabha to upstage him.

Somebody, somewhere from Silchar should do something earth-shattering...I guess we all are proud to be from Silchar, but won't it be good to have one really really well-known figure ??

I don't know about you all...but as a kid I personally had a wish that I'd do something really big...something good and positive...maane biplobi chintadhaara nai...tobe oi je " eshechis to ekta chhaap reke jaa" concept aarki..but probably, it's a a bit too late for me or anyone I know closely to become a legend...hoile etodine hoi gelam ne
:-) So I guess we should continue with our own lives and maybe look to add some more value around us in whatever way possible...and hope hope and hope we get our very own icon !!!

Amen !!!

I am not agreeing with these name. Again there is a conflict among the words 'Wellknown', 'Popular' & 'Famous'.  Moreover those political Leaders name does not make any sense in the List of famous silcharites. There are lots and lots of leaders in our country. Ofcourse, if some Leaders do some thing "Achanoki kichhu", taile oinyo kotha.

6.  Kabindra Purkyastha ( ex MP and Telecommunication minister)
7.  Kamalendu Bhattacharjee ( ex MP, talended orator )
8.  Gautam Roy ( Vice President BCCI, president of the Assam Cricket Association)
Satananda bhattacharjee ( Journalist)
15. Rupak Chakraborty ( Social worker )

I am giving the following sad news which I got from,

http://www.barakvalley.com/news/news1.php

"Santimayee Bhattacharyya no more

BADARPUR, Dec 22 ·Santimayee Bhattacharyya, mother of
Satananda Bhattacharyya, Correspondent of The Assam Tribune at Silchar and Hailakandi, passed away on December 17 at her Ashram Road residence here due to oldage ailments. She was 70. She was a pious lady and was associated with a number of socio-cultural organisations. She was loved and respected by all for his amiable disposition. She was also a freedom fighter. She was a recipient of tamrapatra for role in the freedom movement of the country. She leaves behind four sons, three daughters-in-law, one grand daughter and a host of relatives."

May her soul rest in peace .
Personally I don't know her and  I am not recommending her name as such.  Let others clarify, by default, any tamrapatra recipient freedom fighter can become "Famous Silcharites" ?

First, you all should remove premasish name from the list, he has done a great job by starting this great site, no doubt about it. I have also no grudge against him. But he is famous among the netizens from silchar. A normal person never heard of it, and i have a doubt about the percentage of netizens out of all the populations.

The topic is nice, but what ifeel is we should also tell about lot of unknown people. I mean people who are top in their carrer or fields and are from Silchar(or around).

I remeber 10 yrs back when we were having a big adda in GC College, one gentleman approached us and enquired if we are the students of GC College, on saying yes, he intoduced himself as one who passed out from GC college in 60s or 70s and was at that time an advisor to World Bank in Geneva.

What i feel is that, we might know a lot about people like this, we should let other know about it.

one of the IISc( Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) Director hails from Saraspur village near Hailkandi.

Also, someone says that ONGC's Chairman Mr. Subir Raha also hailed from Barak Valley

At least now we can claim to have an internationally acclaimed novelist. Siddhartha Deb, who spent his college days in Silchar, received rave reviews and critical acclaim for his debut novel "The Point of Return". I believe he shoud be included in the list.

I would just like to point out a mistake in the list. Debasish Roy, although played in all the top clubs in Calcutta and scored many international goals at the club level, never actually donned the Indian colors. Its just a pitty and speaks for the sorry state that we find Indian football today.

You could also think about including the name of Arup Das, who like Debasish hailed from Karimganj, and played for East Bengal, Mohun Bagan & Mohomeddan Sporting with repute. He was a contemporary of Debasish Roy.

And going by the fact by we are trying to figure out the famous silcharites and not the "IN"-famous ones, I believe the names of Mr. Kamalendu Bhattacharjee, Mr. Goutam Roy and Mr. Kabindra Purkayastha should be dropped from the list.

I am not sure if this will satisfy everyone's criteria
of a famous Silchar-ite, but the archeologist/anthropologist
Jonathan Mark Kenoyer (Univ of Wisconsin, Madison)---one of the world experts on Harappan sites---was born in Shillong and lived near Silchar with his parents for the first 18 years of his life. (His recent discoveries were featured in an article in National Geographic Magazine, June 2000) (for a picture see http://www.harappa.com/indus/bio.html). I am not sure though exactly where `near Silchar' he grew up, but that is how he describes his childhood.

There was a Dr. Kenoyer who used to work at the Burrows Memorial Christian Hospital at Alipur (near Banskandi). He is a legend amongst the people in that area for his contribution towards the poor and needy. Though I am not too sure whether he and the archaeologist Kenoyer are one and the same person.

I am also not too sure whether being a Professor at IIM Calcutta would enable a person to pass the litmus test of being a famous Silcharite. But we have Bani Sinha who is a Prof in Operations Research at IIM Cal and he hails from Cachar. Just FYI, he did his PhD from Wharton Univ and has published a number of research papers in leading international journals.

Though he would not win any popularity ratings amongst the students@IIMC because of his ummm "tough" gradings, workload et al but he is respected by one and all as an authority in his field.

For more information on Bani Sinha please visit http://www.iimcal.ac.in/faculty/facpage.asp?ID=baniks

I think we are missing out Syed Mujtaba Ali (born in Karimganj) one of the finest humourists in the Bengali language.
The Sylhetis are known for their sense of humour and Mujtaba Ali leads the pack.

Syed Mujtaba Ali was born in 1904 in Karimganj where his father Syed Sikandar Ali was employed with the Registration Deptt. He was educated in Shantiniketan & Germany

Syed Mujtaba Ali Rachanabali (11 Volumes) published by Mitra & Ghosh Publishers, Calcutta is a bestseller. Full of Sylheti anecdotes this collection launched the "Sylheti" to a bigger stage.

For a Sylheti the collection is a must read.

Aree bhaiira silcharite khali tara na jarar silcharo jonmo hoisse...te to bohut jon oi list thika bad jaibo(including rana dev, kornendu bhat....)

ekjon onek famous manush r naam tumra baad diso ...jani na koto jone jano.......

Ullaskar Dutta...one of the most famous and among the many brainy of revolutionaries, he was convicted for throwing bomb and had been sent to kalapani....there he was tortured to an extent that he had gone mad....later he passed the remaining part of his life in Shillongpatty jailroad...

Also I remember a man who is to walk barefooted with a slanted neck ...he was among the freedom fighters which silchar had...but I cannot recollect his name.....maybe somebody else can help

there are some who doenot deserve to be in the list like dr Rahul gupta who is churning money in the name of serving  people...he is even banking on ramanuj's death...he is a tremendous man but not a good soul...some years back income tax had raided his nursing home and had found money in the bed of OT....I think evrybody remebers correctly

And can anyone explain why adharchand which is among one of the most wellknown schools of silchar not registered yet but ramanuj school after 2 yrs of inception got the go ahead....if his name along with gautam ray should be in the list than the name of gunda rana, kauua jalal, alkaas, should be there along with the other really famous...and if we all agree we can compile another thread for "notorious silcharities" and do something to eradicate them of their notorities as they are a cancer to our society.

Sorry I reacted a little late...but after I grazed through the earlier writings by some ,I happened to see some writings by a so called WestBengal guy, which really left me thinking.

But some questions than and there sprang up in my mind the famous bengalis are not westBengalis but all from east or north.
To make my points clear Rabindranath , surya sen, bagha jatin, jatin das, surya sen, meghnad saha, jagdish chondra bose, even our netaji he was born in cuttack though he had his house in calcutta, his guru chittoronjon das, rashbihari bose, abindronath even many of the famous singers and actors are actually from east bengal. It is always known and even appreciated in calcutta that east bengalis are more manly and the feminine gender is west bengalis...

and bhai re west bengal r mokkel je kuno din je kuno time e koiio tumar barit giya tumare dui tum dia aiimu ne.......

The magsaysay award winner Amitabha Choudhury originally belong to Barak valley, as I heard sometime, however I am not sure of the authenticity of the information. If that is indeed the case then his name should also be included. I have seen the dicussion on Gopa Aich. There is the mention of a Gopa taking part in the Bhasa anolon in the book written by amitabha Choudhury, "Mukher bhasa buker rudhir". May be that she is the same Gopa.

Amitabha Chowdhury is in no way related to Barak Valley. He was born in Calcutta and did his schooling from Mymensingh and went to college in Calcutta and has lived there ever since. He however has done a lot of investigative journalism on issues which had direct relations to Assam and Barak Valley.

In my childhood I had the privilege to go through the nice book  "Sangbader Nepothey" written by Amitabha Chowdhury. I was so inspired by his book and at that time I decided to pursue my career as a journalist. He is such  a powerful writer and journalist.

Do you guys know what is the name of his House in Kolkata??

Its called "Jirani"-- same as sylheti word 'Jirani' which means taking rest.Mymenshing is very near to sylhet and there is similarity in dialects also may be that’s the reason for the confusion.
