Eateries of Silchar

Any gourmand here?
Haven't been to Silchar ever since I passed out in 1995. Just wondering whether the following places still exist?
1. Paul's (opp SMC, good for cutlets, 'luchi-dal' and Daddu!) 2. Mona Lisa (forgot the name of the place...can visualise it though...good "mughlai parothas") 3. Dreamland/ Paradise (near the stadium, good for hanging out when you are out of cash!) 4. Geetanjali (don't know the name of the restaurant....but good, expensive food...Jimut/ Rajib, you remember the party?) 5. The "chai/ samosa only" stall at Premtola (next to the cassette shop) 6. The restaurant at Sudakshina (where my friend who owned the place, gave me and a lady a candle-light dinner!!) 7. The egg-roll walah opposite Capital Travels/ Indian Airlines office 8. There used to be a great golgappa-wallah somewhere in Shillongpatty (close to where REC bus used to stop, was it near Sonar Cachar office??)
Will be grateful if someone could update me on these places..a lot of fond memories are associated with each one of them ;) |

THe old ones are getting worse day by day, yuck!!!!!!! But its a relief to see that new ones are cropping up every now and then.
I dont think the great golgappawallah is there in Shillongpatty now, but if I remember correctly, there are a few in Nazirpatty, which are really good.
Pauls has added a stationary shop to it. Geetanjali is too too bad...gosh!!!! Dreamland and Paradise are the same, from what I have heard.
Will have to enquire about the other ones. Have patience. |

: gour·mand Pronunciation: 'gur-"mänd, -m&nd Function: noun Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French gourmant meaning: one who is excessively fond of eating and drinking
: gour·met Pronunciation: 'gur-"mA, gur-' Function: noun Etymology: French, from Middle French, alteration of gromet boy servant, vintner's assistant, probably ultimately from Middle English meaning:: a connoisseur of food and drink
perhaps you meant gourmet..rather than gourmand.gourmand has unpleasant undertones of gluttony and eating excessively..the connoisseur, which you appear to be..would be a gourmet. sorry for the nitpicking. :) |

wow!! that was something!! thanks.
i take the compliment about me being a 'gourmet' but I actually meant 'gourmand' (you will know why if you visit some of the places I have mentioned...or if you ever take me out for a good meal ;D ) |

Come on folks, let's not turn this place into some kinda language mafia's fiefdom.I guess we will enjoy this place more if we don't do that piece of "nitpicking" a la grammar school and try to keep it a pure adda.
As for the Silchar eateries, the old places like Geetanjali's restaurant and even Sudakshina's have degenerated quite a bit. |

Very few people of Silchar know about Silcudi singara. Its around five km from REC towards UNIV. I have seen people (who know it) from town to drive to that place and relishing with hot almost full milk tea. And imagine, after late afternoon heavy shower when its cool (cool) evening...and this combo of hot samosa and chai... :( :'( |

Shreyashi seems quite good, nice ambience, very resonable price and above all, good quality and good taste food. Service is also good. But that is during 98-2000, I donot know how it is now! A very good place to try ros malai.., basically its a tea stall but onobadya ros malai..., Once again I donot know the quality and taste are presently maintained or not!! Its infront of the medicine shop(central road) (traffic point). towards Devdoot. You can also try for hotels in around Silchar for sheer amusement, food as well as fun.
In one of the hotel, the manger would shout "Tin nomboro DOUBLE DILE(dal)" "Pach Nomboro ekta kalia" And imagine if there is a person in no.5 table who's complexion is black and also ("kita koila aami kalia ") type...!! |

I don't think I'm either a gourmet or a gourmand ;)but I'm posting solely in reply to PR-das posting...and anyway, I haven't been to too many eateries during my many years in Silchar...probably never was too inclined...probably never enough dates ;D...or probably never enough money.
PR-da's got it a bit wrong...we had the party at Hasty Tasty ( opp. Geetanjali's Appayan )...that place still exists although I'm really not aware as to how popular it is these days..if I remember correctly, Hasty Tasty had just opened and they sponsored the quiz winner's lunch...also the best dressed female ( this I definitely remember....Kaushiki Priya Paul :P :P :P )Senjam Rajshekar was there too along with Anirban-da. And yes, we all were defintely "gourmand" that day...I'm sure the owner rued his decision of giving us a free hand ( tummy would have more appropriate ;D)at the menu ! I guess Shreyasi and Barail View rule the roost these days. This however, is public opinion as I haven't been able to properly explore either of the two. BTW, may I know who it was that accompanied the candles and Priyaranjan Jha for the gratis dinner at Sudakshina ? |
