I personally think that, childhood holds a very important place in everyone's life as it is the best time spent in one's life where the world appears to you at its best.These are the golden and carefree days which pass once never to come back,leaving the indelible memories behind.
How I wish those days were back!
But they are gone along with those puppets and dolls,those friends,those pranks,and happiness at the trifles,and last but not the least,the simplicity.
I still remember,as a child how eagerly I used to wait for Sundays as the serials like RAMAYAN,MOGLI,BIKRAM AUR BETAL,CHANDRAKANTA,BHARAT EK KHOJ,were televised by D.D on that day only ;D.
That was the only day ,my father would be at home whole day and my mother would invariably cook either chicken or mutton ;D.It used to be so precious because my father would turn on the Radio in the afternoon,to listen to the old Chhaya chhobir geet and we would get to see one Hindi movie in the evening.

Your post set me reminiscing :D.

When I was seven or eight years old,one marriage took place in our neighbourhood.We,the children, took great interest in it as it was something new to us.
After some days,one of our 'paratuto pishi' from whom we used to get all ideas, suggested that we can organise one 'putuler biye'.
She made two dolls and dressed them as the bride and the bridegroom.I was chosen to be the mother of the bride and one of my friends was the mother of the groom ;D and we started working on it.
My father helped us in making small 'kunja' and pandal as we wanted everything to be the same as it was in our neighbour's marriage.
We were all set.Problem arose on the day of marriage.We wanted to hang one 'welcome' board on the small gate as our neighbour did.But we had difference of opinion on the spelling and my friend said it is 'wellcome' and she was quite sure about that ;D ;D.With the intervention of her father we ended up writing the correct spelling ;).
In the night ,we lit table lamps and the marriage ceremony was solemnised ;) ;D.After that,my friend being the mother of the groom, wanted to take both the dolls to her place.
I had some small wooden furnitures like bed,dressing table,and an almirah(from Gandhi Mela ;D ;D)which were my precious possessions.
My friend demanded those wooden furnitures also >:(.On being asked the reason,she said that one truck-load of furnitures were sent with our aforementioned neighbour when she went to her 'shoshurbari' ::).
I nullified the marriage instantly ;D.My friend and her brother got very angry and shattered the 'kunja' with a kick.It was my turn then ;).I pushed her and she fell on the ground.
Oh,what a pandemonium it was!!!
My mother prepared some food for the tiny 'barjatris' but both the parties refused to eat.We quarrelled and dispersed.
Eventually,both the mothers had to intervene to settle the matter ;D ;D.

Andhakar hoile (chhelera bujhbo... jotokkhan ball dekha jaar, totokkhan itare andhakar kowa hoi na) bari firlam.... genji chhiri gese, haatu porjonto kaadamati... ita nungra paa niya dhum dhum korte korte chair-o paa tuliya boi gelam (haato indrajal comics... aranyadeb tokhon shoitan-rar mukhamukhi)

Maa aiya kaan dhariya bathroom-o pathaila... dui paa dhoite pray tin balti jal kharach koriya aiya koilam, 'Ma, khuda laagse!'

Kene, khelar matho khaite dise na?  >:(   >:(

Disil, shaad nai dekhiya khaisi na  ;D  ;D

Tui jibane kita korbe re... tui to jinish bechiya khaibe (Note: jinish becha maane sales nai... barir fridge, TV bechiya nijer udarpurti kora)

This thread left me rewinding the reels of my life to a stage when there was no tension, no worries and only bindaas phoorty.

As somebody said, life is not at all just. If it had been so, we would have been born old and then gradually become young with enough savings to enjoy the youth.

My father told when he was a child,there were big big trees in Shillongpatty and central Road.One of my Jethu told when he was a kid, There were some 'dhaankhet' in Ambica patty :-/.
You can tell us how Silchar looked like when you were a child :) .

I remembered something after reading this.I was 6 years old then and was a new entrant in the phantasy world.Every now and then,I used ask my mother to tell me a story/fairytale.

One of my cousins who was much elder to me came over to our place and was staying with us.Immediately,I turned my attention to him and started aking him to tell a story.

Our childhood was devoid of TV , Video etc. We had only radio, that too, valve type ( takes 1-2 minutes to warm up, and a fishing net like antenna).  Apart from songs, we also used to hear  Bengali Drama from Calcutta at night. After diner, curled up next to Mummy and invariably went to  sleep before the climax in the drama. And morning we used to get up hearing those devotional songs from the  radio. We used to enjoy radio program ( partly because there is no choice).
The TV program referred earlier during your childhood was really much sought after serial. Remember “Yeh jo hai Jindegi”, ”Paying Guest”, “UFO”, ”Spider Man” the story of a rich industrialist’s family in Bombay, serial  on Wednesday, I forgot the name.

Regarding vehicles, story is even sadder. Before my Dad bought a cycle for us (which is in my class VI), we used to beg cycle from whoever used to come to our house.  Cycle itself was considered a great possession. Car was dream ! As far as I remember, during that time, there were 5 foreign cars in the town, the rest are Ambassador/ Landmaster, Fiat, and Standard. The variety of cars that flood the Silchar road today is even beyond our dream.   The list of cars is like this:
1.      black color Morris Minor  
              owned by  Tea estate owner Bhutu Choudhury.
2.      black color huge  Morris  
         owned by another tea estate owner ( I forgot his name , he has  two daughters, and his wife used to cajole my mother to  accept me and my brother to become their  “Ghar Jamai”, later  we escaped, but that is out of context here).
3.      black color huge  Morris  
         Same   model  as above but older.  This is for rent purposes,  and  we went to Laabak  Hospital to bring back my mother after her operation.( more important thing to me  is not  my   mother’s  operation, but the travel to Laabak by taxi )
4.   GM   Chevrolet,  left hand drive
             owned  by  Moinul Hauque Choudhury.
5      Land Rover                      
             owned  by Surgeon Dr.  Mishra  of Laabak Hospital.

Apart from that there were Jeeps  used in the  offices. My first encounter with vehicle was one such Jeep. It was a 4-wheel drive, petrol engine, left hand drive, made in USA by Willys during World War II. Our next door Aunty was the chairperson of some social development organization to which the Jeep belongs. One day, the jeep was parked in gear in a slope in front of our house. I was, as usual,   sitting in the Jeep and feeling thrilled ( age 6 years). Slowly, temptation took over  and I sat in the driver’s seat and started steering the vehicle. No untoward incident happened…, more courage…, right leg pressed brake pedal, no disaster happened, more courage… pressed accelerator and steered vigorously, Then came the moment…..  left leg became active and pressed the clutch pedal. The vehicle started rolling. I was terrified. Legs froze….  Now, how to stop it  ??  Panicked,  I decided to jump out of the vehicle… left leg lifted from the pedal and the vehicle stopped with a  jerk ( Thank God, it was not a diesel engine, otherwise engine  would have started and continued rolling ). I was trembling in the seat till driver ( Badan Singh) came to my rescue. I thought he will report it to my parents and I was gearing up for the scolding, but surprisingly he hush-hush the whole thing, (sure, he himself was afraid of thrashing from Aunty for negligence of duty, he went for that murgi-wali Moslem girl nearby).

While going through your posts,I remembered something.
Once I was watching T.V(I was 8 or 9 years old then and  could understand Hindi very well).One announcer appeared then and she announced in her husky voice,(it was Sarita Gupta most probably)"Abhi kuchh hi samay mein hum aapko le chalte hain Bombay ke Wankhede Stadium."

I ran to my mother who was busy doing the household chores and  told her enthusiastically that T.V people were taking us to Mumbai and she should get dressed immediately ;D ;D ;D .
It took some time for her to understand what I was trying to say  ;)
Then she laughed and explained the whole thing to me  :-[.After that only I understood what 'Seedhaa Prasaaran' was ;D ;D.

Brown Eyes its a very nice beginning from you. All the posts here are great fun and sensitive as well .

You know, memories make you melancholic and let you put you on a wind trip. Its like wearing those make up masks wihtout really paying heed to the chicken pox left overs.

I had a chocolate coloured bsa bicycle, and the road I used to trvel was no less than the moon surface. And the poor fella used to run for me till the last day of my ride. Well, the road was a visual mixed bag, pollution with spring flowers, human survival struggles with long playing green cricket fields. My alliance with my bicycle has seen it all.

Your post has made me sad as I remember my bsa bicyle, those windtrips, its souvenir to me.

I used to go to one of my friend's place regularly.My friend had a spinster aunt who was very fond of singing.Most of the time she used to hum tunes of songs.
One day it so happened that I went to my friend's place to collect something and her aunt whom I called 'Pishi' was humming something, the lyrics of which was as follows:


         "KE MORILO AAJKE RE" :o.

I was wondering what song is this as its lyrics was really weird  ::).

I asked my friend about it and she listened to the humming for sometime.Then she burst out laughing and asked me whether I have seen the movie 'MELA'(which was a new release then) ;D.When I said 'no',she explained that it has a song which runs like that:

         "KAMARIYA LACHKE RE,
          BABU ZARA BACHKE RE," ;D ;D.

On similar line there was a serial on recipient of  Param Vir Chakra,  beautiful reconstruction of stories made out of their valor and intrepidity. I almost used to cry, :'( because most of the awards were posthumously given. Hats  off to Indian Army.

Param Vir Chakra was one of my favourite programs. Chandrakantar Yakku was a big hit among us, although we were not 'chhoto' when it was being telecast. Infact, I remember a friend of mine after consuming grass responding to I.B. Roy's (stat) roll call as "Yakku Sir" ;D ;D

Hi, all my friends. I was going through all of your posts and couldn't help myself from stating something about my childhood. There was a very funny thing about my childhood, I studied in Collegiate school and that time I was in kindergarten and me and my ma were about to go to school to pick up  progress report which will promote me to the next standard. When we were passing our neighbourhood, one parar dadu came out and started asking ma that where are we going, ma said that which was the fact, then dadu started telling me do you know that you are going to bring "fol' from school, I didn't understand anything and looked at both ma and dadu, anyways I didn't say anything we moved on, after we picked up my report card I started asking ma " ma fol anlai na school takia, dadue to koisla fol anmu" ma then explained me but still I was not convinced and evey year I used to ask the same question, in fact I used to become very angry on this. Today also when I think about this matter I laugh by myself , dadue koisla fol anat jairai to, I thought we would bring lot of fruits from School. Then dadu explained to me that parikkhar fol aar  khaibar fol ek nai.

I also have some embarassing memories to share :-[.

I was nine years old then.I had a friend who was of the same age.We used to go to painting school together and used to share the rickshaw fare .

The fare from our place to the school was Rs 3 and our parents used to give a fiver and a one rupee note as the fare of our to and fro journey ;D ;D ;D.  

Sometimes,the rickshaw pullers used to ask for Rs 4 instead of three and we used to haggle with him and managed to take a Rs 2 note back always.Thus,we became really expert in taking change from the rickshaw puller 8).

One day it so happened that my friend's father gave her two Rs 2  note and two one rupee note.
We boarded a rickshaw and as soon as we reached the school,my friend took out her Rs 3 and asked the rickshaw puller with her characteristic confidence,"Do you have five rupees?"

The rickshaw walla answered in positive and then my friend said,"Give it to me."

She took a five rupees note from the rickshaw puller, gave him three rupees and headed for the school.
The rickshaw puller was at his wit's end then he started shouting,"Ita kita hoilo?Kita korlay tumra?"

I replied,"Joto bhara otou disi :-/.Je kono onnyo Ricksha wala re jigao naa.Bachchha paile thoganir cheshta koro ni?"

Ricksha walay koy,"Kun school o poro?Aamaar bhaara to disou naa.Er upre aamaar thaki Paanch taakaa loiya,aamaare teen taaka diya aamaar dui taaka loiya jairay giya.  :-X :-X :-X :-X

MEMORIES OF THE FINE ARTS ACADEMY , GOVT GIRLS.:

      Govt Girls' er ART SCHOOL was one of the most memorable n happening  place in my childhood…I continued in  4-5 years. we used to enjoy a lot while painting..i specially, used to wait for those 2 weekend days..( one obvious reason was that i was from a Boys' school...n there coul explore a lot of beautiful gaals...  ;D )Saturday n Sunday.... and time of exhibition ..it was superb time... doing AALPONA raat-bhor on the eve, ... planning what to do...preparation of greeting cards. :)..
Few of us  were very famous/Notorious in the art school..we stole PEYARA/SOFFRI from a backside house,.. broke widow-screens by cricket ball,... n a lot NOT 2 mention better. We were like friends to the teachers.(Anyone remember Sumit-Anand-Mrinal-DA...).
After class..sometimes we used to play CHUA-CHUEE... involving all..even MukundaDeb NATH Sir, the head teacher of our beloved AART-EESCHOOL

That was a horror flick for me.

I was in Halflong then, a small kindergarten kid with a curious and sensitive mind.  there was this morgue in the town, I don’t remember right, probably shown to me by the Jeep driver. And then he explained what a morgue is, that it basically stores dead human bodies and autopsies done to determine the cause of (unnatural) death.

Now visualise a true hill station like Halflong. Hills, curvy roads, jig jag rides, long pine and cane trees whisper, cold winds, shades and lights on the road. In the evening Vijay used to drive and like a hypnotic I used to look down at the distant asbestos clad dimly lit cabin a.k.a morgue from the highway. Even if its night you can see the dimly lit windows. I used to try hard but could not help to go astray. And in the Bazzar I used to think, some of this must be back from morgue. and so on

Now seems a real fun

Was the name  Debashis Choudhury [na Chakrabarty?], who captained East Bengal [or Mohun Bagan?]. That gentleman was from Silchar. It was not very long ago.

Asitida, u r right it is Debasish Roy. He played for India, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan and he had also captained the EB side in the eighties. But I am sure he is not from Silchar, rather he was from Karimganj. At present, he runs his own shop somewhere in Kolkata.

I wonder why nobody has mentioned about "Shishumela" in this thread till now...That Sunday morning program on AIR Silchar had a huge following...I wonder if that program is still aired or not.

Apprearing is Shishumela was one of the greatest things that you could do as a child in those days...most children dreamt of it and parents also took lot of efforts to ensure that their children somehow make the cut...

I never appeared in that program...and I couldn't care less...

1.To hear the odd song that some famous (locally) guest-artist used to sing.

(I always knew this was  coming...usually your rank in class determines your roll number...this used to be the standard polite way of finding out whether you were a good student or an idiot...in our school it was different, roll numbers were in alphabetical order and that too with all the girls preceeding the boys...so with my "J" initial I usually used to be after 30 in a class of 45-55.)

'SHISHUMELA'..........Thanks Jimutda for mentioning it.I used to listen to this programme regularly.
This name reminds me of one incident.I was nine years old then.One of my cousins(who was of my age) came from Hailakandi to appear in auditions.My mother took us to the Radio station and I remember escorting her inside.She sang"AAMRAA SOBAAI RAAJAA."(How I wish I also had some talent.Ekbaarer rickshaw bharay dui kaam hoi gelo ne.  8) ;D)
Unfortunately,she didnot fare well in the audition :( but the examiner didnot say anything harsh.He said,"You have to wait for our call.There are lots of programmes lined up now.I have your name and address and will call you whenever needed 8)."

Aamaar mone hoy tumaar chhotobelao equally colourful aachhil.Kintu tumi hoyto aamaar moto nostalgic naa.
My favourite pastime is reminiscing.
Because of this perhaps,I remember almost all the incidents of my childhood.
Our childhood with hapiness, :D  sorrows :(,embarassments  :-[,naughtiness 8),really appears colourful when you look back.

nice to hear that you are in the UK. I live here also.  I am actually writing a thesis on the partition of India with a special focus on Sylheti Hindus.   I was looking for the books myself.  I wonder if you know of Lloyd Wiliams from SOAS, he lives in the Bethnal Green area, he sent me a new edition of 'Sylheter Itibritto' in English.  I am looking to buy this book also, but the original books would be very helpful. Are they available in English? as I cannot read Bengali that well.   It seems from the postings that we may be involved in something similar, perhaps you can fill me in what you are exactly doing, it may be beneficial for both of us.  I will try the information you provided and also I have some distant relatives in Dhaka I may ask them to look for the publisher you mentioned.

But I personally think that a child is not wise enough to understand these things.

The main aim of our parents is to reinforce the ethical basis or morals in their child by referring to the invisible judge.
This helps the child to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong because some threat of punishment is necessary to some extent.
Once a child has the ability to differentiate between what is wrong and what is right,then only he can feel the oneness with God. :D

The bengali medium children just entering class 4 or5 ??? standards used to open up their Bangla books...with the following prayer poem just on the very 1st page.. :-/ :)

Again, does anyone remember the 2 nos movies ...It was screened through schools.. in the Oriental cinema hall.. we the lilliputs...thronged there from all the schools... the movies were 1. Robin-hood 2.The Rhino

However, during childhood, i had two habits..which the elders used to term as BAD ... which was due to my childhood ABHIMAAN.. or resulting from shere Childlike 'BETAGIRI' ;)
Habit-1: Ma-kakimoni rar saathe ekloge kuno khano gele sober aage aage haanta.
Habit-2: Rasta paar hoar somoy kakur haath chutaiya douraiya par hoa.
Eetar lagi kom gaail khaisi na...tar upore jodi deklam..  NIL-KOMLA-SOBUJ jama porra(Any Girls' SCHOOL ;D) ek dol meye odike ar... tokkon  loijjai koi je jaitaam  :-/ thikana naaI.... aami haath chutainr chesta kori--kaku aro tight koriya  haath doriya  RASATA paar  korain......

ami jani na tumra kotojon er bangla boi porara time/enthusiasm ache....Ami dui ta boi er naam recommend kormu - a must read...one is "Pother Panchali" and another is "Kea Patar Nouka" by Profullo Roy...prothom ta hoito naam suncho aar onek ei porso...2nd tar first part o equally good...boi gula te chele belar onek jinis ache jeta tumra onek e hoito korso OR hoito ekhon bhabo je korle bhala hoito...mudda kotha hoilo oi boi gula porle nijer chelebela re onek identify korte parbai...jaare koi nirmol ananda....cholo tumra keu reply dile ami aaro lekhmu.  ;D

1) Dui bondhu er golpo - ek bondhu gach chorte jane arekjon jane naa...jongol diya jaite aslo...bhalluk aislo etc etc..

2) Kaak aar siyal er golpo - kaak mukh e khani niya gach er daal e boise...siyal kaak re gaan gaite koi...khani pori jai niche...siyal khani niya bhage (ei golpo ta porar somoy amar udam taar chirto kaak er upre; oto arua kila hoite pare ami bhabiya paitaam naa; haramjada siyal tar soytani er lige kaak ta saradin na khaiya thakbo, kharap laagto)  ;D

ami abar ektu berosik manus...kobita amar pet o buma marle o bair hoi naa...amar ek bondhu amare udam kobita pathai SMS koira...te amar o ekdin sonmaan e laaglo...after all ami o bengali medium er chele...ami o lekhlaam ekta kobita...SMS koira taare pathailaam...tarpore onek din he amare aar kunu kobita pathaise naa... ;D :'(

Ekhon jeta koite jaimu eta hoito khub bhala laagto na sunte, kintu ami sure amra sob e eta koichi.  ;D

dhori lau sob bhai-bon miliya kichu ekta kheltaso (dos-pochis, chur-pulish etc.), tokhon keu bakka "hawa ka jhoka" dilo.... ;D ;D ;) ;)....culprit bair korar lige ei chora ta use kora hoito....
