'Boiju' r dukan er adda

I decided to start this topic as I am pretty sure, there would be numerous messages for this...bojendro, popularly known as boiju, runs a pun shop right across District Library. He has a small kiosk sotr of a thing on which he keeps his commodities and he used to sit on the railings that ran through short pillars encompassing the Gandhi Bagh Park. I use past tense on Baiju's sitting habbits because, though the shop is still there, he railings are no more. Kleptomaniacs galore, and they have not spared even those age old railings and so now our poor good ol' Boiju jas to stand almost the entire day...also these days seldom you will find a group of guys hanging out there...though I was a rather late intruder into the party, I loved each and every evening that I had been there. Naga da, Shant da, Arunabha da, Jimut da, Siddharta da, Bhaskar da, Shovan da, and my own batchmates, Kotu, Liltu, Paro, Soumesh, Ponchu ...lots of really wonderful people used to come there...and those two three hours each evening were devoted to talking in generel, about nothing in particular. Certain etiquettes also got developed in the course, like all private talkings were to be done on the right side of Boiju...while the ones to his left used to blabber in generel. The topics covered a wide gamut, from hindi songs to whoever lass last went to the movies with which ever guy..and those kind of stuff. Boiju used to chip in sometimes for he was well aware of the little secrets of everyone who was a party to that exclusive group. And I particularly remember Boiju refering to someone's weakness as 'anarkali'.(;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D )Cant explain that more, if I were to, I might land up in trouble. Evening, and for all members of this coterie, all roads used to lead to Boiju. Those had been the days. Far from the crowd in the town and far from the glares of the acquaintances, we used to gather there, and have fun, unadulterated fun. Would anyone who was a party to this beautiful time of our lives, share his(only once there was a 'her' I believe, might have been more, but I came across one only ;D) attachment towards that unlit corner. And maybe can we plan a get together during the Pujas this time there, iwhoever among us are going home this year? Ideas welcome. Those were the best days of my life. Those were the best daze of my life too.

Now this is what I call real "paan"-er dukaner adda !!That hallowed institution,(yes I'll call it an institution for Brojendra is no less)where a lot of dreams took shape and where, even after so many years, all our hearts lie. I'm sure a lot many people would have frequented the place before me, but I'd still dare to say that I might just be one of the founder-members of that rest-spot-on-railings along with Satyam Chakroborty, my childhood pal and partner in almost every crime. And Satyam,Sudip and Kaushik were probably much closer to him than all of us and will remain that way.We were only two then, and the number probably swelled to well over twenty during the heydays.I must've grown a foot taller since I first approached Boju and he now sells at Rs 2.30 what he used to give me at 70 paise, but the attachment still remains the same...so much so that I still go there atleast once, unfortunately all alone, everytime I'm home.
I still can't find a valid reason why I used to cycle so many kilometers practically everyday since he last few days of Class X to this one safe haven we had in town. It started off probably because it was dark, desolate and somewhere no girl ( I still can't figure out which girl Rupam saw once) would ever come to. So we didn't run the risk of either being runover by the eve-teasing, bird-watching gang or being branded one of them.We were civilized people hoping to have some clean, unadulterated fun. Yes, we did discuss lovelives and girls, but that was only a very miniscule section of the topics that we discussed. There were hot debates over cricket, the subtle nuances of an RD song which somebody suddenly remembered or general leg-pulling of anybody who seemed vulnerable. I bore the brunt of the "Anarkali" episode ( the full term, now that Rupam reminds me was " Colgate jelly anarkali")after Boju suddenly decided that the lady in question looked a lot like the girl in the then-running ad for CloseUp.That became a huge hit with anybody who needed to pin me down (momentarily, of course, I too had my share of aces to defend myself from anybody)
I never had a "khata-system" unlike a lot of the others, but Boju was always ready to extend credit, if required.I really doubt whether we actually gave him that good business but he was probably happy just to have a gathering around his shack. He diversified to tea and biscuits which we occassionally had. There are so many happy memories...Nabarun, with his ramshackle Bajaj Cub ( which couldn't carry two people over the steep slope just opposite to the circuit house) and boundless energy and extra-loud exclamations was probably the brightest star. I can still picture him, clad in a Punjabi ("nuton lamaisi paartner !") arriving in the evening and starting off from where he left the previous night. Then there was Buru with his stories...Kotu with all his mannerisms...Liltu with his jibonmukhi gaan and kobita...the insanely filthy langauge that everyone of us used at times just for kicks...the intense discussion between Sudip-Satyam-Buru-Naga and Me...the sudden formation of small discussion groups within the larger group... and the suave Deborshi Bhowal whom we all loved to watch slowly pick up the evils of life. A few faithfuls from our junior batch followed an also became an integral part. I guess, each person, if absent oneday, was missed atleast once everyday for some reason or the other.Often, we would have some visitor who would either like it a lot or not at all. Then there were the days when the District Library would be packed...Boju would be busy doing brisk business but would still try and be aware of what was going on inside...I doubt whether he ever saw me in a NERICIQ final but he shared my joys in victory and my sorrows in defeat ( " Kita lombu?? Aajke harlai nani ??")
The last time went, Boju had left his shop unattended...I had to enter the auditorium and fish him out from among the sizeable crowd engrossed in a Ekanko-naatok Protijyogita...I sat with him on the railing...the usual "Okhon tumi koi ? Baakira koi ?" followed...we both lamented about how times were never the same and who all visited him in the days in between...everyone of those who came like me must've felt exactly the way I felt then...a sort of this-is-where-we-had-so-much-fun feeling...It became unbearable after the first 5-10 minutes and I had to leave."Aaiyo abar," he says, I feel all the more terrible...if only I could just swish a magic wand and recreate the whole ambience all over again - the leisure, all the poeple, the hot-issues...
And sure enough, with that same old twinkle in his eyes, he asks, " Colgate-jelly koi okhon ??"...this guys never forgets...and none of us will forget him...ever.
Brojendra, oneday someone from us is going to show you this page on a computer screen. |

what more would anyone be able to add to this? that small corner, dark and damp, has carved a niche for itself in probably everyone's heart who once used to be a pround inhabitant of it, for at least two hours each evening. wonderful, wonderful depiction of the emotions Jimutda, probably you said it all, you spoke everyone's language. yeah, someday, Boiju is gonna see this page. Probably. |

I've sent a notice about this thread to a few of the stalwarts who have been an integral part of the Brojendra-saga...let's see how many of them have the attachment left to feel inspired and take time off from their busy schedules and post a line or two... |

First of all my literary efforts may not be as telling or subtle as is the case with some of my fellow mates. So apologies in advance for if i am unable to satisfy some of the demanding souls or for inducing unwarranted sleep. Here i go ---
There are(some of them might have become 'were' s by now..) quite a few things about Silchar which i have been missing for last 2-3 years of my professional life. And our Boju, his tiny den on the railings( some people say that these have been evaporating quite dramatically in the recent past!!.. correct??), the amazing folks who used to frequent that corner and the equally amazing chit-chats (plus a few other interesting activities as well!!!) which the folks used to indulge in - features almost at the top of the list and i have been missing the whole gamut of fun ever so sorely.
These days i satiate myself by hanging out (very rarely) at some big city joints(sometimes alone on my own) or by seeing a movie or two over the weekends. But guys and gals, truly Boju's is Boju's and there's no match for it.
I can't help but feel nostalgic about Boju's. On one of those heady evenings while i was on my way to Boju's (aboard a 'rishka'), that one of my pals called up home and queried about my where-abouts. And guess what happened next ? My old man came up fittingly indeed- "...his suppers don't go down his system properly if he misses out Boju's in the eveinings" ("Shantanu r to ba ratrer khawa hojom hoy na okhano na gele..").
Unforgettable were the many titillating Boju-stories(with usual doses of concoction of course) about the Circuit-house-games people used to play - both indoor as well as outdoors.
Can't forget the misfortune( but thrilling of course!!) of being sort of chased by 'Laal Topis' who got alarmed by the regular high-pitched war of words among some of my buddies.
Regarding the get-together etc. I am sorry to say that i won't be there @ Silchar these Puja, thanks to the goddamned job of mine. The browse-with-Boju stuff planned sounds just great. I am going to do that the very day i step on Silchar next time around. You know, Boju himself is at his best chatting about or seeing 'sizzling' stuffs. So guys, who haven't yet explored that side(believe me that's as seductive(:-)) as are his 'pans') of Boju , go, sit with him and hit the link 'www.troublingP...y.com' or the likes on the pane.I am sure when you would come out of the cafe your head would be damn full of ideas from Boju on how to alleviate those eternal 'troubles'.
What else?...Long live Boju & Boju's and the legacy surrounding ...

Justly put forward the emotions and adherence we always had for boju. Thanks Jimut.
I still remember the very first day when I, along with some of my very own para local guys, ventured the then – not – so – known – to – the – society paan shop and standing behind was the proud owner of that small hovel asking us kita lage?
Wills ashe ni?
Ashe kintu khuchra diwo ……
Hardly I knew, that with time, this guy called boju would leave a mark on all of our friends’ heart. (I don’t know how many of you feel like that …… but I surely believe I can never forget him in my lifetime)
Boju was there at that time standing like a unscathed virgin girl, in her teens, waiting for people to populate her coop, though he, to keep pace with time, became very much professional, but to us he was always that boju, who is eager to discuss any topic with us (not bothering if he knew the subject or not), who wanted all of us to visit his house at least once, who will always discuss where he was keeping his hard earned money (though that was very few who knew about it may be myself, satyam, jimut and buru).
One thing I can never forget about him is the trust he had with us, and never he used to take advantage of us in anyway. Many of us had khata system, except jimut, kotu (who always hated the whole khata system very much!) or may be few more. Every evening with the entry of each adda member… each one used to light a cigarette and all the way through out the adda many more … and everyone while going used to shout boju amar 4 – ta wills , boju amar 7 – ta wills aar ekta paan ……and he used to just hear that and write it down exactly, without any confusion and mixing up of things.
One problem he always faced was remembering the names of our beloved friends!! So he used to call them, by the name, he thought was more suitable to him, like cassette for archit, lambu from rangirkhari for jimut, batti from rongpur for shantanu, pharmacy for daipayon, shillongi for sudeep, naga for nabarun, kotu for our great kotu !!, and lastly petla neta for buru !!.
Come evening and all roasters of the clique used to start from their respective home to the one and only destination, boju’s adda. So much was the enthu, Rain or no rain, sun or no sun, come what may, boju was a must (strictly followed by we three or four of our friends). Sometimes we used to wonder why we all are so much addicted to boju and his small paan shop. We never got the answer, and still now whenever I happen to visit silchar I make it a point to make at least one visit to the place where we all passed our golden days.
Boju was always the shy kind of guy and many used to smoke with out giving money and in that one of our friends used to top the list .He was better know by the name “ kotu “ !! He used to say aai kotu nani bujhchho ni kaushik bhai … paisa na diya khali cigarette khaiybo. Aajke dekho, paisa dile, cigarette dimu … but as usual, like all other days, kotu was the winner leaving boju admit defeat to his sympathetic talks! But boju was always the same boju …… here I would like to share with everyone one of the many incidents that happened surrounding boju ……
During the flowering days, when his business was in full swing, he was lured (by one of his many bus conductor friends) to try out the paid service, which was easily available in the town, to satisfy his growing physical, or should I say mental, urge. And his favorite place for the wild sport was behind the district library auditorium stairs, surrounded by wetland and thick grass.
Some of us like satyam, buru, myself and jimut (I hope) knew the things that were happening around us. One day satyam and me were as usual nattering when we thought, it was high time we tell boju the evils of going physical with anyone and specially with out any shield! (‘Cos boju asked us once ita kita ba? …… Rubber diya aar moja hoi ni?). So satyam poured boju with all the ill affects that comes free as a gift along with that pleasure, after giving an intense hearing for about 15 mins, while shaking his head in between. Buchhot ni okhon? asked satyam. Buchhi ba, kintu… tumi jaano ni ke mut hoyse giya sobche boro oushod ……saab kichu karar pore mut diya dhuya layile kono roog hoy na ba …… khali lecture tumi sikho amar kach theke, rubber kinte paisa kharcha koriya laav ache ni !!! replied boju, with a dirty smile hiding behind his lips !
That was the end of that day’s session and we went home feeling frustrated, as if a man without any weapon won the battle!!
But what ever it may be boju will always have a place in our heart ……
Wish I had the lamp and the Jennie who can take us all, who grew many foot taller (like jimut …), back to the same adda once more, and reawaken our good old golden days at least may be once!
Thanks, Kaushik |

Well this is something that is very close to my heart......it is next ot impossible to forget those lovely day.......as for me there is another reason for not forgetting it as I had to really dig into my pockets for comming there.......probably I am the person who used to come from the furthest distance.
This was really fun to be their.......the best days of my life.
I think I know who the 'her' was who visit our brojo but i really fail to remember who this 'anarkali' was or may be is.
As for brojo I can only say that he was a really nice guy......a guy who has been able to create a corner for himself in every person's heart who used to hang around his little shop.In last two years I have been to Silchar only for 4 days e.i. in February and I did take out some time to visit Brojo but unfortunately he was not sitting there that day.....my bad luck. However I plan to be in Silchar during this puja and it would be great fun if we could meet there once again.
My earliest recollection about brojo was that of having some thing over there that used to cost around 24 Rs that time along with Sakir and Jimut ( Thanks for informing me about this adda). I still remember the day when we came down all the way from GC to have that thing.Beside this there are a lot of incidents that are really unforgettable. It would be really nice to meet during this puja so that we can refreash those memories.
I have passed on this information about this adda to some of the other 'brojoians' and hope that they will respond to this.
Well Rupam, Jimut, Kaushik, Shant if u cone down to Silchar during the puja than do meet me there.
With luv, Bhaskar

Bikale Bojut aireto, Bijut meet koria Devdooto jaimu ne, Keu phone korle koiyo bojut asi...... they are endless.
Starting from November 1991 till the day I left silchar boju was the place where we dreamt, fought, argued, met new people, some of them went on to became very good friends of mine and also bade farewell to a lot of dear buddies. I am sure if a guy named Brojendra Ch. Das hadn't immigrated from Bangladesh and settled in Silchar and opened THE pan bidir dookan me, Jimut, Sudip and number of others who used to frequent Boju would have been different. Boju is the platform where each one of us can speak in the same language irrespective of where we are, whatever we are doing.
I am sure someday that Old Glory of boju will return (Do I hear a buzz of AMEN) and we will be there, yelling at top of our voice (© Nabarun,) Mridul conversing in Unca Donalds voice, Buru telling something or the other from his dubious archive (still remember Buru locating Johns Meal in New Delhi in the dead of night), Jimut talking about his deeds (mis) in Borkhola, Nachi with his constant jabbering, Kaushik working with tuk-tak-shing-wala (hope he remembers it) and me, Jimut, Sudip, Shiba, Pushling (Joyjeet) and kotu anxiously waiting for him to finish. And, offcourse, Boju chipping in with his trademark smile something special like colgate-jelly-anarkali. Kaushik must remember something more of Boju hits like 7lock blades. (mono thakle add koridis partner.)
Last year when I went to Boju, the first impression was that he has changed along with the place, but when I said, Boju ekta filter partner, that old smile along with that shine in his eyes returned as he said in a voice with suppressed excitement Satyam bhai kobe ailaye, baki shob koi. I sat there alone for almost an hour. I asked him kita boju kirokom choler, na ba ager moto ar nai. He continued, tumra jokhon aslaay, koto jon aito, scooter, bike, gadie bhorti thakto (he was very proud that there were bikes and cars in front of his shop) okhon ar keu aye na. Aijkalker chelera ino ar aram paye na and he talked about those evenings and the commotion that used to exist. The day I left I had a cup of tea and a fag and when I offered him his due he refused. Upon my pestering he said, kita re ba Satyam bhai tumare ek cup chao khaoite pari nani. Hope I am worth it.
I wish some how if we can recreate anyone of those glorious evenings that we once spent in Boju, I know that’s almost impossible, but still somehow….
Bye for now.
Satyam
It was really nice to hear from kaushik and bhaku (mail karna yaar, maytas_in@yahoo.com).

Purano se diner kotha bhulbo kirey hai.... Brojo and his Pan Dukan will have a special place in my heart. Always! It was this place where we spent some of the finest hours of our lives. As I was informed about this effort, a sense of nostalogia crept into me. I suddenly remembered those fine days, rather evenings, which we spent together discussing anything and everything with Brojo chipping in sometimes with his trademark comments. Just remembered a technological innovation by the great Mridul Mohan Das. It was on how to make a stretch limo. I'm just quoting him, "You take an Ambassador (you are right its the old Amby!), cut it into two pieces, now join the two pieces by using rubber and what you get is a Stretch Limo!" Just wish I could relive those moments again! |

Hello ppl of Silchar,
Silchar was never my place and I never lived there but I feel it in my heart. Silchar is the birthplace of my mother, father and grand parents' (ofcourse). I have only been once in Silchar though.
My Father came to Sylhet Medical College to study medicine and he didnt go back. I am now in UK doing PhD in London University. I know couple of other ppl living here are form Silchar.
We still got a piece of land in the village Kanakpur. And my paternal cousins are living there. I dont think anyone of them use internet or computer. But this is a message to all of silchar: Its a lovely place and we still cherish it in our heart. Long live Silchar.

These type of addas in the public places are sinking silchar and the tendency of the youngstars to come up in life.only the hidden dating in the remote area of G.C.Ccollege during college hours and addas in the night cant produce any beneficial result. So avoid these addas.

Hi ...
Really its nice to read those moments in our college life..I was not a regular goer to Boiju's dukan...still I njoyd all the moments in the boiju's dukan...We had some njoyable adda sessions there which is hard to forget.....those adda with a cup of tea...really its fun....but i dont think that charm is there now...those railings has been replaced by now a concrete wall, today i am not sure whether that dukan exists or not......but still memories will always be there...it reminds me of my favourite song.."Coffee house er sai adda ta aj ar nei......"..neways its Boiju's dukan..which is always special...
hope many ppl will write abt this dukan and their memories.....

sorry for the sentu. |
