So far as Calcuttans are concerned, world is pretty much confined within Coffee house and Rabindro sodon. Ask that idiot if he has even heard of a place called Silchar. Indians get pissed off when Americans display their ignorance in the field of Geography. But our own Bong brothers are much worse. I am yet to meet a Calcuttan in our local Bongo association who can point in map of India where Silchar is located. Thanks to education system of west Bengal.

Very true.The comments of Cofused reminded me of an Incident.Way back in 2000,I was in Kolkata for some days and there I happened to meet a boy of my age.In the course of conversation,he came up with the question,"Where are you from?"
On being told that I am from Silchar,he asked where Silchar was."It's in Assam",I replied in exasperation.
His next question came with a shrug"Where is Assam?"
I got very annoyed and told him that it was a disgrace on his part, not to know the names of the all the states of India and especially the one with such a close proximity and left the place.
After that incident I encountered that boy, but it was not very friendly.
No wonder whatsoever if other states don't have any knowledge about Assam,when People of West Bengal,(the adjacent state) don't seem to be aware of the existence of Assam(it was too much).
The Americans ask a lot of weird questions about India.If our own people don't seem to know about us then we can't expect others also,can we?In Hollywood movies,India is portrayed as a country steeped in superstition,illiteracy,poverty etc.They will deliberately choose a famine stricken place to present a bleak/grim picture of India.
In Arkansas,there is a place which is supposedly inhabited by the cannibals.But our directors will never dare to bring these things to light.
I still remember one scene from MUNNABHAI,MBBS,which shows a Chinese/Japanese (One chinky guy) taking photographs of a slum area.When Circuit told him that there are lots of good things to capture he told circuit that he wanted photographs of true India and real India,poor India.
I was really very happy with the punishment meted out to him.
I simply jotted down my opinion and I may have deviated a lot while doing so.

Soumitra Chatterjee who was the learned man in the village, was describing a war that was going on in the western world, ( Paschim dike ), A gaonwala who had not seen anything beyond his village ( I think in Midnapore), asked where the war was going on “ Paschim dike mane ki aamader gramer pashchim dike pukurer opare ? “ Soumitra Chatterjee gave him a contempt look and considering the background of the gaonwala, told “ Na , aar ektu dure”
The boy in Calcutta you referred to, could he be a descendant of that gaonwala ? ??? ???

Its very interesting to hear such stories. I have very annoying experience when shopping in Kolkata. As soon as you enter a shop the shop keeper/assistant will ask, "apne ki purbo bongyo", mane Bangladeshi. I got so sick of hearing this. I said to them "purbo bongyo hole ki, jinish guli r dam kom hobe".
In one shop I walked into, all the assistants were sleeping. As soon as we entered one them woke up, without actually looking at us properly, the assistant said., "ashen aapa". then another assistant opened her eyes and saw my 'shaka' on my hand and bit her tongue and looked at her colleague. I said "Ekhane bujhi shudhu aapa ra ashe" and walked out of the shop.
I have many Kolkatian friends here. While some my friends and relatives hide behind their Sylheti identity I am very quick to say I am Sylheti. Last year at the 'deepavali' festival I organised, I made sure that Bengali's were covered demographically and geographically. I was then asked to speak in Bengali. I started by saying "aami kintu Sylheter meye, tai, matri bhasha jodi mukhe chole aashe, tobe bujhe nite hobe, aami o onek koshtu kore shudhdho bhasha bolar chesta korchi". Everybody laughed and the whole thing went fine. I do not justify myself as a Sylheti - or Barak vallian, I do not look down on anyone or let anyone look down on me.
As for cohesive living, its difficult in India, because the society is too digressed. But, one should keep their own esteem without trampling on anyone. That's self-respect. |

Dear i_am_amnesiac,
Is your pco owner was around 37+ years old at that time ? In that case probably his school geography text book would have included, “ Shillong, Assam abonb Meghalayer rajdhani”. ( If he is very old then “ Shillong, Assamer rajdhani” ). He messed up two things :
1) Shillong and Silchar name similarity,
2) Didn’t take into account that lot of water has flown in the river Brahmaputra in last 25-26 years.
I will give him pass mark in geography. But that [b]%&^$#%*& boy of Calcutta[/b] who doesn’t know Assam, should be court marshaled .

Why did you say so? Just for the word "Amaizing" instead of "Amazing"? It was just a quick light response while rumbling on this page (typo can be made); I didn’t have any intension for being a grammatical guru. I am pretty accurate about my geographical knowledge (I know exactly where is the location of Sylhet in Bangladesh), but its shameful calling a part of your own land as foreign location. So I suggest you better learn the literal meaning of English and be my advisor.

Dear Javed,
If you go through the postings carefully, you'll notice that nowhere its written Barak Valley is in Bangladesh. But ofcourse we call ourselves sylhetis as our ancestors hail from that place and we respect their sentiments. We don't care if that region belongs to some other country now, our views are not so constricted yet.
