Barak Valley- A Tourist Attraction
«on: 12/28/03 at 17:48:27 »

:) Hello Everyone,

I was just wondering if we can all come up with few ideas about how to attract tourist/foreigners in our Barak Valley (Silchar, Karimganj & Hailakandi). I mean, it's so surprising that we are probably just 45mins. away by roadways from Sylhet, where we can find almost everything which is available in global market.  We understand that its happening because of their people living abroad and they are contributing financially to grow & boost the economy and being able to create a better place to attract foreigners.

So can we all make some suggestions about how to attract people in our lovely place. What are those requirements necessary to create a Tourist's Attractive Place?

I know you might wonder, what shall we get by suggesting if it's not going to happen.  But,  who knows? Atleast we will all have some ideas about how we would like to see our Barak Valley. How about that everybody?

Cheers, Sanj

I don’t know why we can’t come up with suggestions, the people of Barak Valley (Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi) are now spread all over the world and living abroad (I am living in London, originally from Karimganj) and I am sure we’ll be able to provide some constructive ideas which will atleast help all of us to think positively, so that ONE DAY we can make it and attract people to visit this place.

If we really think about the Sylhet town, which is only 25/30 minutes away by car from Karimganj, it’s Amazing to see what it’s become now. I understand that people who are living in abroad are immensely contributing towards this development and they are pouring in to build their economy. It didn’t happen in a day, did it? .So it’s not really a problem to CREATE A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE AND VISIT.

So why delay, please start contributing your ideas and thoughts and I am sure we will be flooded with suggestions and ideas.

Cheers, SANJ-B

Hello San-b,

Its nice to hear from you.  I also live in the UK.  In fact I am a resident here.  I  have a special relationship with all the 3 districts, my paternal home (Hailakandi), in-laws (Karimganj district) and maternal home (Silchar).  I would love to see the place develope.  Your idea is good but the infrastructure needs to be developed.  The condition of roads, rails, bridges etc need to be properly operable.  Together with every other institution.  Perhaps, a package of ideas including infrastructure development should be sent to all the district powers.  Do you know how many Barrack - valley people live in the UK?  There is a huge pop. here.  But the sad fact is that most of them came here over 35 years ago.  Their children, grd. children were born here and have very little knowledge and respect for  their motherland, mine included.  Its not their fault, as when they go back all they see is under-development, it is very difficult for them to understand and cope with the chaos.  But unless stand is taken to better the situation it will never change.  If you would like keep in touch here in the UK let me have your email add.  I live in the west midlands  (Coventry).

hi,
i think we should keep Barak Valley...just up to its name...lets not make it a  copy of some other big city..it wont survive that...Varak Valleys...most attraction is its ARTS N crafts .So in place of making it materealistic we should encourage to produce the real jewel.

Hi Sanj_B,
The topic initiated by you is great indeed and it surely deserves attention. So far as the tourism industry is concerned, Barak Valley is a special case of pauperism in the midst of plenty.Barak Valley or the whole North-eastern region for that matter is very rich in terms of scenic beauty. But,unfortunately our Govt. is not capitalising on this.It pains to see how the Govt in U.S capitalises on an ordinary canal. Some months ago, I happened to visit a city called  San Antonio in Texas and the most important attraction there, was a place called 'River walk'.
I was very enthusiastic initially but to my utter disappointment,I found the place to be a canal flanked by pavements and restaurants. It has boating facilities also. Most of the places of U.S are hyped up far beyond their worth.Had I not seen myself,I would not have believed.I wonder how many canals like that exist in Barak Valley. But none would think of using it that way.The problem actually lies in the approach and in the way we look at things.Didibhai was very right in saying that the infrastructure needs to be developed. One of the attractions of this region is it's handicrafts,as Paromita mentioned. This thing should be brought to limelight so that it attracts the attention of the tourists.Barak valley does have the potential of becoming a very famous tourist spot. The only thing that is needed is the proper approach.

Yes , the right approach. but how many do know the right approach. I think it would take a lot of concentration and potential and persuasion. I have no idea about the next step.
