was it necessary to start a new thread on G C College whereas the old one is still alive... would a mere change in the title help regaining people interest in G C Coolege r adda?
I think it would rather create confusion where to write, since we are much more familiar with the earier one.

I was in 1998-2000 batch of MBA......at that time we had only four faculties in our branch.....there's a very interesting incident that i remember and would like to share with u all....
Once we were giving presentation on our dissertation topic..few senior proff. from some other dept. were invited as judges....one of my fellow mate started his presentation with a very nice and ornamented introduction, but by the time he could finish the introduction and start his topic one among the jury member shouted, "PLEASE COME TO THE CONCLUSION".....we all were shocked n surprised....coz' in a professional course like MBA the stuffs like presentstions and seminars are given utmost importance and emphasis.....probably the non-professional and academic background of the respected Judges was the reason for this incident..... |

Hmm....that strikes a nostalgic chord.When you talk about the VC office I must tell you guys that when I went to the university last time, I found that our VC has erected a statuette of Netaji on the Statue of a horse in the Mukta Mancha. Hey, this is not to belittle his efforts, but like many other things,it did not quite work out his way and the contractor had his way....Something else that I remember quite often is our revered, respected, most esteemed, adorable, and highly knowledgeable, Dr. Gyan Prasad Pandey, (now heading the Mass Comm. dept.)
His character always used to remind me of Bernard Shaw who used to say that, its the uniqueness in Character that starts the development of a unique personality, and the uniqueness of his character was....that he knew he was unique.... |

Hello everyone!
Posting after a really long gap...
Well,there are so many interesting memories associated with Assam University that mentioning all in one post would not be possible...thus posting one of those now...
One of our batchmates (1998-2000 MBA Batch) came up with a very innovative idea of spending time during the Bus journey from Silchar to the University.He used to sleep during the whole 45 minutes that it used to take from Silchar to University.He was not interested in watching the beautiful and serene landscapes that we used to pass...after Medical crossed,be sure that he would doze off.
As we used to travel more on private buses while coming to the university,sleeping before Medical for him was not possible due to the rush.
One beautiful day,while our friend was sleeping,the wife of one of our reader was travelling on that bus.The honuorable lady was very optimistic that since a student from her husband's dept is also travelling,she won't have too much of a problem in getting seated.Unfortunately,our friend didn't noticed her as he was asleep and the honourable lady thought that our friend is deliberately trying not to notice her as noticing her would entail him to offer his seat to her.
The lady complained to her husband who in turn gave a nice and emotional lecture to all of us on courtesy,mannners and respecting elders.
Our beweildered faces was giving a big zero all of us were trying to locate and find out that why today,our respected sir is deviating from his usual topics...Ultimately,after the class,it was discovered that the above incident happened in the bus and our friend nicknamed "dropsy" became the topic of the day.

amrar dept er 2nd semester o amrar summer training hoito..so as usual amrar o hoisil..amra hokkol calcutta gelam ..amra aaslam 13 students..though at the start of the session amra aslam budhoi 25 jon kintu aste aste chara suru hoilo as could not cope up with the pressure
jai houk amra all 13 students sob thik korlam je ek loge thakmu..ek loge hokkol gelam saraighat e calcutta aar asta rait beshir bhag e khellam tash aar kichu e khello antakhshari ..so suru hoilo prothome ramkrishna mission thakia kintu it was impossible oto din hino thaka..so amra sob e ekta flat o uthlam jeta amrar ek batch mate or mama'r aasil..so summer training hokkol er oi bala gesil aar ek loge we had real fun..starting from jhogra jhati to fun ..sotti cherishing memories :) :) :) :) |

Namaskar bandhura.... though I m not studying in AU now.... but I hv atteneded 2 classes in the MBA dept 1yr back. And I hv done my graduation under AU. So I hope u guys wont mind my posting over here.
Well, I 'd like 2 share my experience that I hv had on the day of my Admission in the MB dept. As U all know, the distance between the MBA Dept & the Administrative Block. Amar oidind 3 chakkar katte lagsil.... bus takiya naimiya soja MBA Dept... then 2 the Admn Block, then back to MBA Dept, then to bank, then again to Admn Dept. At last 1 meye daya koriya amare tair car e lift dilo froya aibar samay.... I was very frusrated and jealous of my friend Tommy who took admission in Mass Com Dept on the same day.... and he was having fun at that time since the distance between Admn block & his dept is just about a 100 meters. I saw him sitting inside the canteen with other fellowmates when I was roaming like a $#@*&
But I could not enjoy that adventurous(!) university life for long..... I moved out just after a few days.
How does it look now? Is the constuction work is over...or still goin on? and what about the Street lights? and Bus?
okay then... bore koriya thakle sorry...bye 4 now...

Dear Friends!!
Among the most memorable memories during my University days was the jostling that we used to do for getting a seat in the Buses.
While coming from Silchar,the most prevalent way was to ask each passenger-"Dada,koi namta"???
If the answer was Medical/REC/FakirTilla,one could see the glow in our faces...the next step was to give our bag to the unassuming gentlemen and request him-"Seat ta rakidein je".
Of course,this rule didn't include our friends from Malugram/Tarapur/Park Road etc.They were fortunate enough to be seated most of the time.The hardest luck used to be for poeple like me,who had to board from National Highway/Link Road.
One of my closest friends & the creator of this thread used to be seated all the time as he used to board the bus from Malugram...
While returning back from the university,the safest option was to book a seat in the University Bus with a piece of paper/wood/stone/cloth...whatever you could lay your hands on!!A few enterprising friends used to book the seat with a rough notebook.But,to book the seat in this way,you had to act early as after 1pm,all the seats would have been booked.
Another option was to go to Irongmara and board the bus...still another option was to move ahead to the Shiv Mandar and board the bus coming to the University.
While all this,one of my innovative friends came up with a novel idea...whenever a bus crossed University,he used to shout-"Oi,eta khali re,taratari aye,taratari aye".Quite a few used to fell into this trap and board the bus...thus,the next bus used to be comparatively less populated and he could manage a seat therein.

8)its really fun time for me because through this adda i have been reintroduced to all my known people with whom i had lost contact in all these months.
its time to recollect some old memories during my varsity days.
i was in the department of mass communication in the batch of 2001-2003. we were 10 girls and only 3 boys.........
so that was quite natural of being the centre point of attraction for most of the ?
our instinct in aus started with the oath taking ceremony which was attended by daughter of utpal datt (famous comedy actor). at present i am working in Bhopal and as was told to us you dont'nt know when u met whome so be prepared, it came true in my meeting jaya bachchan.
one of the most famous words in our department was by SB sir's words. he used to tell us tighten ur belts and u people must have big eyes and large ears. those of you who have no business here go and hang ur self.

Thanx, MBA dept. also had quality students but, unfortunately couldn't get that kind of grooming in terms of professionalism and hence.......??
Ambience does matter, especially when you take up a professional course...coz' u need to be equiped with specific qualities that fits the bill of the industry u r going to get into... |

Ya,you are right Mrinmoy that MBA dept.used to boost of quality students...I interacted with three batches...the 1st batch(our seniors),2nd batch(us),and the 3rd batch(our juniors).
Our batch was teeming with talent...in fact,some of the most talented guys that I have came across were in our batch.Same was with our senior batch as well as our junior batch.
I feel that one of the most important guiding force behind any professional course is the quality of faculty that it has.Even while ranking the best B-schools,outmost importance has been assigned to the quality of faculty.
Mass Communications were lucky in that respect as it got the guidance of Partha Sir and Sisir Basu Sir.
Both are rated extremely highly and are brilliant academicians as well as having splendid industry expousere.So,that definitely had it's impact on my friends of Mass Communications.
Industry expousere plays a great role in shaping a faculty's outlook towards imbibing a particular course and or while delivering a lecture...and that really had it's impact. |

It's not that the students of AU MBA dept. are the only one who endure the dearth of quality faculties....in fact the university as a whole in our nation has this problem leaving some highly appreciated ones.....the only probable reason behind this is the unprofessional and utterly academic background of the entitis which is really very tough to alter....the practice and mind set of the management of such institutes are nothing but a trend that is running from so many decades.....they need to understand the requirements of these kind of professional courses....... |

Ha ha...the perfect fool...look mr. ,,assam university is ranked 178 in UGC's top 200 nationwide university list. Standard of faculty is very high in top 50-75 (MBA institute, not university system) business school. And they dont end up doing medical representative or call center or DSA's (Direct Sales Agent/Wholeseller/Agency) sales guy for big companies.I know there are few exceptions.

Tara dui jonei, tarar nijer "karma" hishabe desher sobchaite bhala school e porer. Kintu class 12 er por, it may also happen, je correspondence course korte lagte pare. It may not be possible for me to finance them for professional course. Ami salaried class public. Onek chele maye, jara khub i brilliant, jader teacher ra o khub bhala, may not make to top ranking jobs. They may be going for medical representatives job. Nothing deplorable. Atleast, we will have in our country MRs who have very good funda.
Basic jinish ta hoilo....we are all going through the "labour Pain" of transformation from developing nation to developed nation. So, it will give us more strength if we respect ourselves where ever and what ever we are in.
So, cheer up.

It is immensly important for one's career growth to stick in the same line...you will face hurdles-too-many,sure.But with perseverance,dedication and honesty one can overcome all these.
Today,there is dearth of jobs for everybody...irrespective of whether one has passed out from where...IIM passed out could be exceptions...
I've seen students from most prestegious Business Schools in Delhi searching for mundane jobs...they can't even arrange a summer placement for them.
For an entry,I agree that the reputation and brand of the Institute sells but after that,it is only the productivity,hard work,honesty & efficiency...In professional life,these certificates,marks etc don't carry any meaning...
I have seen people passing out from top schools in India...also getting a good break as their first job...but later due to inefficiency...being handed the pink slip...And as far as my information goes...I'm yet to come across a single friend from Assam University who lost his job due to inefficiency...unproductivity...
On the other hand,I can take n number of names who are doing wonderfully in their professions...having passed out from Assam University...you can't keep a good guy lying down for long,he will stand up...
The only drawback what I feel is that we had to slog it out really tough for our first break(ofcourse I was one of those lucky few who got my first break on the very day of landing in Delhi-17th Sept,2000).
Now,coming to the sentiments of my friend who believe that he has done the right thing by not studying in Assam University,I remember one story...
Once,India exported a ship full of Prawns to Japan...on reaching Japan,the officials were surprised to see that all the boxes carrying Prawns were without lid...they were fuming and blasted the Indian Ship Captain..."What the hell is this...Why are the boxes without lids...so many prawns must have crawled up and escaped"...The Indian Ship Captain smiled and said,"Don't worry,man...these are Indian Prawns...when one will try to come up,others will bring him down." |

Arey na na this is not a serious issue....you dont have to much wield your brain. This was a kind of joke. What I mean I write a lot in this website and eats up lot lot of space, which you know Mrinmoy is not free (that's why silchar.com needs our contribution, thats my guess) and then people reply to my writing, makes my topics most popular (names and pseudonames), and thus more space is involved, and soomehow I held myself responsible for that, though I am a professional writer and get paid for each word I write, still, more than appetite for appreciation from an open field like that it is for the love of Silchar that makes me write, compells me to connect in any way to my known and anonymous firneds, allows me enjoy the taste of my homeland's earthy flavour notwithstanding the uncensored responses I receive. Every year UGC conducts Refresher Training Courses for the Faculties of Universities all over India...
This year Assam University has been selected for conducting Refresher Course for 12 different courses...
One heartening news has been that the Dept of Mass Communication,Assam University is the only dept selected to conduct this Refresher Course in Mass Communications.

Mass Com. deserves that, so......MBA with left out faculties like Prof. Y V Rao and Burman is not even in a position to offer quality classes to the students.
My intention is not at all to criticize them, coz' they also have tried their level best with their status of knowledge and professionalism to teach us, but eventually it's the students who get into the soop after passing out...
One of my friend, in this adda has stated that knwing these facts he dropped the idea of persuing MBA from AU. But, is this a solution??????....i don't know if he has done a gr8 thing by doing that, Coz' this university is our's and who else then us can be the wellwishers of this.....
I have fair idea about BANGALORE UNIVERSITY where marksheets are bought and sold jus' like stock excahnges....yet students from our place never mind spending 4-5 Laks for persuing courses like BBM and Dental Science. Only thing that they learn at the and of the day is uttering some words like 'BULLSHITT', 'FUCK-OFF' n bla bla.... |

I sincerely believe that dropping the idea of persuing MBA from Assam University is not at all a good idea.
I have seen students from prestigeous Business Schools in Delhi roaming for a summer placement,leave alone jobs...ultimately,their parents are left 4-5 lacs poorer...add to that living in a metro and it's value added costs...
And mind you,what they are getting is not a degree...a degree can be offered only by an University constituted under the Indian Constitution...no one else can offer a degree...what they offer is PGDBA or Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration...this doesn't hold good in Govt. organizations.
Ya,we faced dearth of good faculties...no second thoughts on that...but I am yet to come across a single friend from MBA 1st,2nd & 3rd batch who is unemployed even after venturing out of Silchar...there are a few guys who are still in find of their first break...but if you don't venture out of Silchar,who is going to come at your home and offer you a job???And we shouldn't blame the University when we are ourselves not upto the mark...
Mrinmoy,in my present job,I had a chance to induct Summer Trainees for various projects...and you can't imagine the quality of those few guys...they didn't had the attitute even to work hard...the course material they were studying were of an obsolete pattern...they didn't had Markov Analysis,Linear Programming,Decision theory in their QA course...
I am not trying to generalize,but a fact is always a fact.

Came to know that few among our senoirs have joined MBA Dept of AU as ad-hoc faculty. i'm immensly happy to know this. They, atleast will be able to equip students with the real job condition n the skills that needs to be acquired to get them instead of making them dream, "bad of roses". |

Ya,i'm also glad to hear that a few of our seniors have joined as adhoc faculties in Assam University.
They will I'm sure be able to provide the proper ambience of professionalism and efficiency that the dept needs so badly.

Ok,so let's start with the socio-economic importance of Assam University in Barak Valley and the contribution it does for upliftment of the overall education scenario in Barak Valley.
It can be said without batting an eyelid that the overall economic scenario in Barak Valley have leapfrogged to newer heights after establishment of Assam University.
In economic sense,the surrounding areas near Assam University has uplifted to a large extent.Take the instance of Irongmara as an example.After establishment of the University,the purchasing power of the inhabbitants of Irongmara has increased manyfold.Disposable income of almost every household has increased and that reflects in their buying power for mostly durable goods.
Many new shops and resturants have opened up.
In economic sense,this is a perfect example of unbalanced growth...where one big infrastructure boosts up the overall economic condition of that place.Idea is to boost up the per-capita income of the people residing in that place.

Ya,when we talk of per-capita income and how it could be raised...the main objective is how to decrease the number of people living below the poverty line.
In reference to Irongmara,that has definitely happened...I mean for the marginal and small shop owners in particular.The overall purchasing power of the hamlet has augmented,no doubt.
Now,coming to the issue of less fortunate people also being able to send their children for Higher Education in the University,establishment of Assam University has been a boon for them.
It is an another story altogther whether higher education should continue to be subsidised and that is a national debate. |

I'm not quite sure about the overall improvement of economic condition in Barak region, but undoubtly, there was a overnight change in the regions surrounding AU....like irongmara, silcuri etc. ,but unfortunately, this cudn't add to the improvement of basic needs like road and water.... |

Hi WELL I am not from Assam University, SILCHAR.
But of late got to know AU better through the net and from friends who studied there.
I wish that AU raises its standards as it is a Central University.
I did my M.A in Modern Indian History from JNU and then went on to do M.A in Broadcast Journalism from Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism, Noida Campus. Of late, I am happy that I tried to get a summer training internship for my friend from Silchar Moushumi Acharya who is now on an internship with ETV in delhi.
Well, after AU Mass Comm students can excel.
I have been in Delhi since my childhood and know that Delhi, inhabited mostly by Biharis and UPites who are not that sharp intellectually. They are basically rowdy in their approach and talk rubbish. I am saying mostly. There may be one or two exceptions. In comparison, bengalis (syhlletis) are superior intellectually. If I am say so........ They can get a job if they work hard for it.........
Delhi is a city which is very materialistic............

I am from AU....studyng there was a real fun!! But now I find that all the good teachers are gone. >:(...donno what will happen to our department..juniors keep on cribing...scared of there future....during our time the HOD was responsible for arrangement of Summer Training. But now the students are going mad as they themselves have to arrange for it. Those who has personal connections...they r utilising it...those who dont have...they just dont have it. No other way out!!!
Now who will sing " Amar priyo shobar priyo mass communication" ??? None!
Partho Chatterjee is no more... Sisir Basu gone...present HOD is hopeless...and rest lack experience!!!
Haire shadher University...no practical planning at all ...no desire to run the institution in proper way...this organisation could have changed the future of Barak Valley students. |
