Turmoil in REC Silchar continues From Our Correspondent SILCHAR, Nov 4— Cachar district administration has been keeping a close vigil on the day-to-day development of the Regional Engineering College. A top rank source in the district administration informed The Assam Tribune that an attempt was made to create communal tension in the campus just prior to the last Durga Puja. Its principal Col JS Virk was gheraoed at his chamber by a group of teaching and non-teaching employees and was allegedly manhandled. The source further informed that attempt was also made to bring army within the campus. Meanwhile, Col Virk had accused the administration of biasness. In a report to Sri VS Pandey, joint secretary of the HRD Ministry, Col Virk alleged that he was pressurised by the administration to fulfil the demands of the agitating staff to release their full salary though the MHRD vide its letter No. 12-8/2001-TS had directed him to deduct the salary for the period of strike declaring the agitation as illegal. He further said that he had “more than sufficient reason to believe that the magistrate on duty was biased and was virtually representing the mob.” Cachar Deputy Commissioner PK Das, however, told this Correspondent that the administraation never put any pressure on the principal, though the magistrate tried to ‘convince’ Col Virk to sign the salary bill as the situation was turning out to be grave. Almost after a fortnight after that incident, Col Virk on November 1 informed the mediapersons here that neither the district authority nor the State government had even given him a courtesy call, though he had been physically assaulted within his chamber. |
