The advertisement world is comprised of many entities, like artistic, intelligent, moron, nonsense..so on and so forth.
You have aptly pointed out the beauties of Amir Khan Ads in Cola. However, please recall the Sony ad, where the Chawl kid bowls to Kapil. What a beauty. I think all of you have liked the Center Shock ad...both of them. Amazing acting skill of the common people [I mean the people who are not cine stars or TV stars] and fantastic composition by O&M team. |

The fevicol ad was the best conceptually in quite sometime...wherein the shadow of a man gets glued onto the shutter of a fevicol shop while the man himself moves ahead...
also another fevicol ad showed lots of people glued onto a lorry as it moves over an undulated road...amazing ads...
the centreshock ads are cool...the second one is a touch better...the one in which the would be father-in-law falls from his horse in the photograph...
the mirinda ad is good as well...the one in which the little guy gets a haircut done from a garden worker
...meanwhile...keep an eye for an ad on OZONE layer depletion...its conceptually very good...it has already appeared in a few magazines...it is on a streched out page...which when you unfold, you find a certain part torn off from the picture of the sky...and through that you can see the message about the depleting ozone layer...fantastic fantastic ad do keep an watch for it...its worth the vigil regards |

Yes, I totally agree about the Fevicol ads. Prior to the glued shadow ad, there was another, showing a typical hindi film sequence, where the hero does not fall from the bridge because a fevicol dabba is placed on the TV. I do not watch TV much now a days, so I have missed the Mirinda ad. I will look for it. The tasteless ads include ones by Akshay kumar for thums up. There was also a beauty, if you recall, before the SetMax matches started, showing a tamil girl doing Rangoli..and chanting vedic hymns in terms of Sachin Sehwag..etc. The abominable magazine ads are coming for United Colors of Benneton. The magazine being in the hand of growing and inquisitive children at home..it is pretty difficult to negotiate sometimes. |

recently there has been a huge huge controversy created regarding the UCB ads...the Bombay Times (a suppliment of TOI) did carry almost one page of atricle, survey and readers' comments on it... Half the respondents were of the view that there was nothing offensive with the ad while the rest were pretty much against it... Personally I feel that if UCB were to take these ads out on niche magazines, for example femina, oiverdrive etc. then there would not have been such hue and cry...however, the reason that Dr. Sharma mentions is indeed true...the ad appears in newspapers, in magazines meant for all people...and hence the children have access to it as well...that can indeed be damaging...
a few years ago there was this ad for tuff shoes from phienix...a reebok product...probably... also there was this ad about a coffee that seemed more like an ad for KS...
as the recent admakers have shown...even the Indian ones...that its possible to create worldclass ads out of simple things...the various international awards begged by Indian ad companies, or the Indian chapters of firang adcompanies, further proves this point...
The most important objective of an ad is to remain in the mind of the prospect and to remain there distinct...in the face of so much clutter... while some admakers do that with crisp and wonderful ads that appeal to the intellectual part of the minds of the prospects, some others actually do it by appealing to the other sensory organs of the human mind...the ad from united colours of benetton probably is of the second type...
anyways I hope we will see more wonderful ads coming our way in the future...and if not the Indian films, the Indian ads surely are creating waves around the world. |

Eitto ! Onek din pore hi-fi adda marar topic ! Someday ektu ghuchaiya ekta post kormu notun thread on my favourite ads. I guess somebody else can start that as well.
Ya..I liked the Coke ads too...even the "aath" one with the kids enacting the earlier "paanch" ad...have to give credit to Aamir for bringing out such different flavours...Punjabi, Hyderabadi, UP/Bihari, Mumbaiya Tapori...
The Pepsi ads somehow have lost their fizz...I didn't like any of their World Cup ads...the one with lion seemed to present our cricketers with too jocular an image for comfort. Also, the latest catch phrase, "What's there ?" doesn't cut much ice. And all though the cheer leader girls in the latest Saif ad ( where the South Indian hawker screams "Paapseee !" ) are good, nobody beats the stunners that graced the swimming pool in the Diet Coke ad aired a few years back :P...remember that ?
Prasoon Pandey's ads always have a very Indian flavour covering a wide spectrum of Indian culture with just a tang of humour and suspense. Recent good ones in memory include Centre Shock and The Times of India ad...also the Air conditioner ad ( Electric Bill, electric bill, very long...) which may not be by Pandey but very much his kind of stuff.
I have been a very avid follower of ads right since my first days with a TV...from the days of "Vicco Turmeric, Nahi cosmetic..." to " Super Panchso Pachpan, Pachpan, detergent tikiya" to " Tata ka OK dhulai ka sabun..."
I think I remember hell lot of jingles verbatim still...and maybe I'll be able to recall a lot many with decent accuracy if somebody' give me the first few lines of ones that I've forgotten.
Most people from Silchar would also be familiar with teh Bangladesh TV ads...come to think of it, there was a time when India and Bangladesh were pretty similar in ad quality. Don't know about the present day BTV but look where we have gone now ! A lot of you would remember " Ek nombor pocha shaban " ;D " Maaser raja illish, aar batti-r raja Philips" " Xi-Pheng power tiller " ( I remember the whole song...nice bhatiali tune similar to the song " Arre O sundoira naaoer maajhi..." )
And how many of you remember the gem, " tumi roj bikele amaar bagane phool nite aaste, jaani na tumi phool na amakei beshi bhalo bashte..." ?? ;D ;D Unearthed this last month while gossipping with a few friends in Kolkata about the good ol' days.
Signing off for today...and Oh yes ! for the first time I kind of like the latest Tata ad...the 207DI ( Mehnat, Masti...baari baari !!! )...not bad considering past ads of Tata Vehicles...never liked FCB-Ulka ( now FCB ) ideas...maybe they are finally listening..but still a long way to go...and had I the power with me I'd have changed Fluer Xavier as the Telco model first day in office...replacement ? Well...how about Yana Gupta draped in Red Chiffon draping a Black Tata Indiva bonnet in 2004 ??? ;D :P ;D |

During 1980-81, TV was not there in the NE, and we used to have dicussions in our MSc classes..animated ones..about the models appearing in B/W news paper, Illustrated weekly, Gentleman and others, as well as in the Ad films before the main movie. Duleep Tahil used to appear for Bombay Dyeing. He also later on appeared for a peculiar ad for VIP frenchies. However..those years I happened to really admire [??? or fell for ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D] a lady called Savita Dhanrajgir. She used to appear for quite a few products. Swaroop Sampat was also a pretty face that time. As jimut mentioned, Sangeeta Bijlani's Ad film for Vico facial product..a Mehandi Ceremony sequence and a post marriage sequence used to generate a lot of winking discussions ;D ;D ;D ;D. |

And how can we forget those weekly Amul hoardings with the Utterly Butterly girl ...
The hoarding in the begining of May, when the Air India Pilots went on strike due to SARS scare, had the caption "Errline Pilots" with a cartoon of the Uttelry girls interviewing a group of IA pilots .... check out the latest one at http://www.amul.com/2003hits/page2.html ... These weekly topicals from Amul are simply great !!! They are not only there for advertisement purposes, but they also make a subltle point. |

Urojahaj marka aalkaatra... ;D ;D Savita Dhanrajgir??...Swaroop Sampat ?? :P Also reminds me of Poonam Gidwani, Lisa Ray and others who used to appear for the stunning Bombay Dyeing ads...
As for Bangladesh, I remembered a few more...usually shown during their "megajin onusthaans" ;D 1.Labonye sharadin, Sibon vanishing cream...lal-la-la-lal-la-la...Manola Manola !! ;D 2.Dano and Red Cow milk powder ads. 3.The bangladeshi film trailors...poor in quality but we took a long time to start showing trailors of newly made films in India. 4."mo" diye maa hoi, ki hoi aar ? "mo" diye manola baby powder ! ;D 5.Melamine bhangbe na, ete daag porbe naa, futonto paaniteo golbe naa, rong noshto hobe na... ;D ;D
Coming back to our own old-time hits, I'll try and type down a few more...hope it revives a lot of old memories : 1.Surf's "Lalitaji" ads. 2.Maruti 1000 with its "you're so like the lady with the mystic smile..." 3.Monte Carlo sweaters which made George Benson so popular 4.Hero Honda Sleek...I was in Class V or VI and used to drool over the bike and the distortion guitar piece they played in the ad. 5.Pepsi's first ever ad, a 90 second monster (with 60 & 30 sec edits I think ) featuring Remo and Juhi Chawla...Are yiou ready for the Magic. 6. The Lehar 7Up Fido Dido ads...returned once again these days. 7.Lijjat Papad...eh he he...eh he he... ;D ;D 8. Nirma, Wheel nimboo shakti, Super Rin ki Chamkaar...baar baar lagatar. 9. Boom boom shak-a-laka boom boom shak...Street Cat's gonna knock you back !!! 10.Angrezi bolchal shikne ka, ek anokha source, Rapidex English Speaking Course ;D |

;D Well well.... There was a time when we used to sigh [..ie.. ISHH amar bhagye jodi tumi thaktai go] looking at the models appearing in movie hall ads or BW news paper ads... it is very encouraging to see that quite a lot of our friends are still keeping track of them ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
One of the ads, not appearing much these days, has created quite a fan circle. It is from a paint company [I forget which one it is]..that says..Wah Sunil Babu..naya makaan..nayee biwi...etc etc.. follwed by BADHIA HAI. That "Badhia hai" has become a "chalta phirta" phrase with proper imitation that is used to leg pull some body buying a new car or getting married.
By the way...Premashish..can you send me a photograph of Jimut if you have one ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) |

The punchline is gr8… hawa lag gaye. The girl does a nice act. In terms of concept I am totally tired of seeing things happening around the product/product logo/hoarding of the product. Fevicol, Kelvinator, Glycodin, Mak lubricants (eeeeks!!) and now Onida... so only hindi filmwalon nahi....even the intelligent adwalas are also repetitive.

Dear Krishanu...
I don't know which time period you-re talking about but perhaps you are looking for the line, " Food, Friends and Thums Up ".
There was also a bengali version which went , " Bhoori Bhoj, Addar Mouj, aar Thums Up".
Roughly at the same time, you also had from the erstwhile Parle stable, " Gold Spot, the zing thing ! " and " Fun time, Limca time, Lime 'n lemony Limca...Limca Limca !"
I am also reminded of another two cola drinks that were there for a few years in the late 70s to the early 80s... One was DOUBLE SEVEN to celebrate the ouster of Coke and the landslide election win of 1977 by the Janata Dal...
The other was one for which they had newspaper ads, hoardings and also a spot ( probably featuring some lesser known bollywood starlets) showed in cinema halls...you might recall, " Hum tum aur THRILL, chahe mera dil "
As for the Vigil ad...
Tandurusti ka sabun Vigil Parivaar ka sabun Vigil Iski keemat...(DilipVengsarkar asks " Mehenga hai ?" to which Manali replies, " uh-huh " )...kuch bhi nahin... Zyada din tak chale ye Vigil !!!! Khush ??? |

Arekta kita "chup chup baithe ho, jaroor koi baat hain...." ni? amrar mono achey mastor or baarit giya inncocently gaanta gaoat aslum ar erporey jey shob feedback paislaaam...
if we are talking of print ads, then Trikaya Gray used to come up with stunning B&W ads.
Dis anyone mentioned the "Liril" ads and their models from 70's till date? Something for what Padamsee can be justified as "GOD". and there was a jingle (think coined by A R rehman) for Asian paints, still comes up during the diwali time "khushi ke rang laye ye ghadi....." great one, catches up with the diasporic community.
And recently I liked the ad this lubricant... (the name not popping up) where a cycle overtakes the truck .......... |

silcharer maaiyan has mentioned about this Becardi...let the ball roll....ok..these are some ad slogans form Becardi's mastuto bhai biradori.
Seagram's 100 Pipers---There are two kinds of people on earth. The who's who. And the who's he.
Seagram again---The power of consistency. The strength of maturity. Glen McGrath. Truly Royal Stag.
Johnnie Walker---"I am a slow walker, but I never walk backwards." Abraham Lincoln
Foster Beer---An official sponsor of Grand Prix
McDwell---The weather outside shouldn't ruin a perfect evening
Now now...i believe i am walking thru the danger zone...pls dont perceive me as liquar savvy (even tea is no no for me).So here is another slogan from another liquid product.
Tropicana (fruit juice in a non toxic way)--The taste of good health. ;D ;D hic hic ???

Check out this one from Honda... one of the most amazing commercials... and all this is supposedly without any computer graphics or digital tricks.
