Programme on Adolescent Education at NIT Silchar
To create awareness among the youth towards sex education and to provide the youth with adequate and accurate knowledge about human sexuality in its biological, psychological, socio-cultural and moral diminution, a training programme on Adolescence and Adolescent Education was organized recently by Centre for Educational Technology, National Institute of Technology, Silchar in collaboration with Centre for Adult and Continuing Education, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong at CET Hall, NIT, Silchar.
Sri Kishor Chandra Satpathy, coordinator of the training programme while welcoming the guest highlighted the importance of adolescent & adolescence education in the school & college level. He pointed out that the aim of the programme is to create awareness & build perspective on the need to provide information & education to the students regarding sexual & reproductive health with special regard to HIV-AIDS.
During the last decades adolescence education has gained serious concern. Most of the people feel that there is a need for the adolescence to be prepared and have sufficient knowledge on matter related to reproductive health sex education, human behavior, nutrition and child care, said Prof. Sudhakar Rao, Registrar (i/c), Assam University, Silchar, the Chief Guest of the programme. He stressed to provide learners with adequate knowledge about human sexuality in its biological, psychological, socio-cultural and moral dimensions & pointed out that the adolescence education will help the students to understand their sexuality, taking responsible decisions about their behaviors. He also pointed out that at a certain point of time the adolescent should be imparted about the knowledge on preventive measures and dangers of sexual intercourse and for related problem (STD, AIDS/HIV). The adolescent mist be made aware about reproductive health, small family norms, family planning schemes and other related issue, sensitize them on issues related to population explosion.
Col (retd) J S Virk, Director, NIT Silchar in his Presidential address pointed out that there is a widespread ignorance among youth on matter related to sex, the physical and psychological changes that individual undergoes during adolescent-period. The most dangerous aspect of the ignorance is the risk of unprotected sexual activity. Intake of alcohol, use of drug at the adolescence stage, exposure of the adolescence to STD/AIDS/HIV and unwanted pregnancies. For improving the quality of life of the adolescence these issues need to be focused again in such type of training programme.
Dr. B.P.Sahu, Centre for Adult and Continuing Education, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, said that in India sex education is not initiated by parents. Educational institutions do not provide lesions on sex education, nor do they teach or impart the healthy knowledge about sex education. The phenomenon of sex education has been misused and misinterpreted. Adolescence curiosities should be cleared and provide with realistic facts of life, frank and straight forward answer to their questions must be provided to help them to learn the facts of life. At the same time much freedom regarding son must not be permitted during this period. Some restrictions must be observed for the healthy growth and development of the adolescent. Dr. N P Goel from Centre for Adult and Continuing Education, NEHU, Shillong in his address focused on imparting knowledge on the subject and enhancing skills of teachers and peer educators on planning and implementation of school / college level AIDS education activities.
In the training programme around fifty students from 8 different educational institutes participated. The participants appreciated the various participatory learning methods, which helped in shedding their inhibitions regarding sexual and reproductive health issues. There was a common agreement among the students participants regarding the following points:
Sex education should be included in the school and college syllabus. Sex awareness programme should be organized each and every school specifically in the rural areas. There should be more experience sharing session in the training programmes. More emphasis should be given on IEC i.e. Information Education and Communication.
At the end of the programme Mr. Kishor Chandra Satpathy presented vote of thanks.
